Freya’s Pov

Catherine found me in the garden. Her face was careful. That made me scared right away.

“Freya, sweetheart. Can we talk? Your father and I have something important.”

Father. She said Marcus is father. They are not my real parents. I always knew. But they raised me. Loved me. They were my only parents.

So why that word made my heart hurt now?

“Okay,” I said and put my book down.

She took me to Marcus’s study. He stood by the window. His shoulders tight. Dane was there too, leaning on the desk. My heart went down more.

Why Dane here for this?

“Sit, please,” Marcus said.

I sat. Dane came behind me. His hand on my shoulder. Usually that made me calm. Today it felt like ready for bad.

Catherine sat in front of me. Her hands white from holding hard. Marcus stayed standing. Looked ready for fight.

“What is it?” I asked. My voice small. “You scare me.”

“We not want scare you,” Catherine said soft. But her voice shook. “We have to tell you something. Should have told long time ago.
