Chapter 1

Author: Little Fish
"You hurt my son, so I'm going to beat you to death!" The heavyset Mr. Osborn grabbed me and snarled at Danny, who stood frozen in terror. "I'll make sure you learn what happens when you go around hitting people at your age!"

He yanked me forward so hard that I stumbled. I looked at Mom, desperate for help. I wanted her to say something—anything. Just once. However, she would not even look at me. She just kept bowing and nodding at him.

None of this made sense.

Mom had already paid the medical bills for Mr. Osborn's. She had even given him 200 dollars to buy candy with. Mr. Osborn said he had forgiven Danny, so why was I still being punished?

A strange sensation on my arm snapped me back. Mr. Osborn was stroking my skin with his thumb. When I looked up, I saw the odd smile on his face. I tried to pull away, but his grip was too strong.

"No! You can't take her!"

Danny rushed forward and wrapped his arms around Mom's legs. Tears poured down his cheeks.

"A child who has done something wrong needs to face the consequences!"

Something flickered across Mom's face, though I could not quite place it. Then, she frowned, her expression turning severe.

Danny only cried harder. He dropped to his knees and started slamming his forehead against the floor. "It was me! I hit your son, not Sienna! Please, just let her go!"

The sight jolted me into action. I fought against Mr. Osborn's grip, trying desperately to reach Mom. She pulled Danny to his feet and stepped back. "Whatever you want to do, she's yours to handle."

When she turned away, the truth finally hit me. She was really leaving me behind.

I watched them walk farther and farther down the street. Panic clawed at my throat. I wanted to scream after them.

Before I could make a sound, Mr. Osborn's hand clamped over my mouth. He dragged me into the storage room behind his shop.

Inside, his expression softened. He offered me candy and said he would be good to me, that I did not need to be scared. I was not hungry, but I forced the candy down. All I wanted was to leave.

Unfamiliar touches ran over me, freezing my whole body, and an inexplicable panic welled up in my heart.

I struggled to reach the warehouse door, but suddenly he pinned me down violently, his strength so great that I could not move.

His movements grew rough and menacing. A sharp, stabbing pain shot through me, and I wanted to scream, but he clamped his hand tightly over my mouth, his eyes darting about in panic, as if terrified of being seen.

“Be good. If you listen to Uncle quietly, I’ll take you back to your mom.”

I stopped trying to pull away. It hurt so badly. I wanted my mom.

When I stopped struggling, the his smile widened.

“That’s right. Only good, obedient children get to see Mom!”

I finally couldn’t take it and struggled to run away, only to be dragged back again and again. After what felt like an eternity, I lay there motionless, staring blankly.

Only then did the boss say softly in my ear, looking satisfied. “That’s my girl. I’ll go get you something nice to eat.”

He left humming under his breath.

Twenty minutes later, he threw two pieces of bread and a water bottle through the doorway.

"Stay here and wait for your mom. If you tell anyone about this, you're dead. Understand?"

I forced myself upright. The threat in his eyes made my stomach twist. I nodded quickly.

I had seen that look before. Mom used it on me all the time. Whenever I refused to take Danny's punishments or cover for his mistakes, she would stare at me just like that. Then, she would threaten to give me away to someone else, and I would always give in.

Mr. Osborn did not wait for an answer. He just walked out and shut the door. I reached out to stop him. However, when I looked down, my hand had turned transparent.

After the wake ended, everyone slowly left. Mom stood quietly beside me for a while, her tears falling onto my body. "I'm sorry. If there's another life, don't come find me again. I wasn't a good mother."She covered her mouth, turned away, and started sobbing. Dad leaned down and kissed my forehead, tears streaming down his face."Sienna, Daddy loves you."Danny stood on his tiptoes and kissed me too, copying what they did. He pulled out his favorite toy and set it beside me. "I'm giving you my favorite toy so that you won't be lonely."His mouth trembled just like Mom's had. "Don't come find me either. I wasn't a good brother. I kept lying and making you take my punishments. I'm sorry, Sienna."The three of them wrapped their arms around each other and stood there in silence."That's not true," I whispered, my vision blurring with tears. "I love you all so much. You're the best family in the whole world."I floated above them, and tears fell from my eyes without warning, lan

A lot of people came to the funeral.Mrs. Fletcher was there. She was the one who always told me Mom only loved Danny. When they saw how pretty I looked, they tried to smile, but their expressions crumbled before they could finish. Everyone had tears in their eyes.My best friend placed a bag of candies beside me. I had told her once that Danny got them all the time, but I only got a piece every two weeks. This time, she brought me a whole bag.I was so happy that I reached for them without thinking, but my hand just passed straight through. I sighed and kept floating overhead. My homeroom teacher stood nearby with red-rimmed eyes. He let out a shaky breath and placed a certificate beside my body. "I promised I'd nominate you for Student of the Year this semester. I'm keeping that promise now, sweetheart."His voice broke.Night fell. People c

At dawn, my maternal grandparents arrived. The moment Nana burst through the door, she slapped Mom across the face. "I told you over and over! Sienna is Sienna, and Danny is Danny. It's too late for regrets now!"She looked at the bloodstained white dress on the couch and wailed. She then reached out and pulled Mom into her arms. The two of them clung to each other, sobbing so hard their bodies shook."My poor baby. My Sienna was such a sweet, good girl."Pop-Pop stood to the side without speaking, but tears streamed down his face too. He let out a long sigh and stepped forward to pat Dad's shoulder gently. Dad's eyes were swollen and red."I was wrong. I was so wrong..."Mom sobbed in Nana's arms, gasping for breath as she repeated those words over and over. They all broke down together. Late at night, Dad sat motionless on the couch, holding my white dress in one hand and the doll he had bought me in the other."Sienna, I brought you the doll I promised. I spent so long picking this one out. It's the pink one you love. I should've come home sooner. You were upset that I'm always working and never home with you, right?"I know I was wrong now. This punishment is a little too heavy for me to bear, Sienna. I don't think I can take it."Mom listened to his words, her eyes red. She sat down quietly beside him and patted Danny's shoulder gently before speaking."Sienna told me once before that she didn't want to take Danny's punishments anymore. But I didn't listen."I hurt Sienna because I was so focused on teaching Danny right from wrong. When Sienna was first born, all I wanted was for her to grow up safe and happy, so why did everything change after Danny was born?"When she was three, she said she was the happiest kid in the world. But after Danny came, she never

Even if she had been found in time..."The doctor could not bring himself to finish. Those words pierced the hearts of everyone present."The child has been gone for several hours now. My condolences."Mom sat on the hospital corridor bench, her eyes hollow, clutching the white dress they had taken off my body.Dad sat with a blank expression, staring vacantly at his shoes.By the time they finished all the arrangements with the hospital and left, it was already dark.Dad drove Mom home. The silence in the car was unbearable. Neither of them said a word. Before Dad could finish, Mom suddenly screamed. Dad froze mid-step. Mr. Osborn's trembling body went rigid as he saw the even more terrifying expression on Mom's face."How dare you do this to my baby?"Mom grabbed my skirt and pulled it down to cover my legs. Then, she lunged at Mr. Osborn, climbed on top of him, and started hitting him with both hands, screaming as she struck him over and over again. "You monster! How could you do this to her? She's so young, she's just a little girl!"She kept hitting him without losing any strength. She was completely falling apart. Dad finally pulled her off, and she went limp in his arms, collapsing to the floor. They both broke down as Mr. Osborn lay motionless on the ground.Sirens from police cars and ambulances filled the air at the same time.A neighbor had heard the commotion, checked on them, and immediately called the police.
