Chapter 2

Author: Little Fish
What was happening?

Before I could think it through, I realized something else. The pain was gone.

I ran toward the storage room door, desperate to get out. However, I was moving too fast to stop. I was about to crash straight into it.

I squeezed my eyes shut, but the impact never came. Instead, I found myself standing outside. Could I really fly now?

It all made sense now. On TV, the superheroes always had to suffer first before they learned their powers. Mr. Osborn must have been teaching me magic! Here I thought he was a bad person.

Excitement and relief flooded through me. I drifted home, following the route from memory. I had to tell Mom the good news! Maybe I could even show off a little in front of Danny.

Still, something was wrong. The people on the street did not seem to see me. When I accidentally bumped into someone, I would pass straight through them. What was going on?

My thoughts felt scrambled, but the need to get home only grew stronger. I would figure it out once I got there.

What were Mom and Dad doing right now? Was Danny crying again?

Something bitter twisted in my chest.

Mom had not meant to abandon me. She was probably just punishing me like she always did.

Wind rushed past my ears. In less than five minutes after learning magic, I was already standing at the front door.

I reached for the handle, but my hand went straight through. I stifled a laugh. I slipped through the door, planning to surprise Mom. She scared me all the time. Now, it was my turn.

Mom stood with her back to me, staring blankly at the pot on the stove. There was no trace of a smile on her face.

I suddenly remembered. Today was my birthday!

Her eyes looked a little red. I sighed like a grown-up.

She was probably regretting handing me over to Mr. Osborn.

I took a deep breath. "It's okay, Mom. I'm not mad. I know you just wanted Danny to behave. I'll teach him better from now on."

She did not respond. I called out again, more uncertain this time. She still did not turn around. It was like she had not heard me at all.

This had happened before when I ran home after taking punishment for Danny. She would ignore me like this until she stopped being angry. Then, her expression would soften.

She was probably still upset. I stepped back, tugging anxiously at the hem of my shirt. I wanted to say something else, but I did not know what. I should find Danny instead.

He relied on me so much. Watching me get taken away must have scared him. I forced a smile back onto my face and turned to go. Then, I walked straight through another person.

After the wake ended, everyone slowly left. Mom stood quietly beside me for a while, her tears falling onto my body. "I'm sorry. If there's another life, don't come find me again. I wasn't a good mother."She covered her mouth, turned away, and started sobbing. Dad leaned down and kissed my forehead, tears streaming down his face."Sienna, Daddy loves you."Danny stood on his tiptoes and kissed me too, copying what they did. He pulled out his favorite toy and set it beside me. "I'm giving you my favorite toy so that you won't be lonely."His mouth trembled just like Mom's had. "Don't come find me either. I wasn't a good brother. I kept lying and making you take my punishments. I'm sorry, Sienna."The three of them wrapped their arms around each other and stood there in silence."That's not true," I whispered, my vision blurring with tears. "I love you all so much. You're the best family in the whole world."I floated above them, and tears fell from my eyes without warning, lan

A lot of people came to the funeral.Mrs. Fletcher was there. She was the one who always told me Mom only loved Danny. Relatives I had never met before, along with Mom's and Dad's coworkers and my elementary school classmates and teachers, were there too. When they saw how pretty I looked, they tried to smile, but their expressions crumbled before they could finish. Everyone had tears in their eyes.My best friend placed a bag of candies beside me. I had told her once that Danny got them all the time, but I only got a piece every two weeks. This time, she brought me a whole bag.I was so happy that I reached for them without thinking, but my hand just passed straight through. I sighed and kept floating overhead. My homeroom teacher stood nearby with red-rimmed eyes. He let out a shaky breath and placed a certificate beside my body. "I promised I'd nominate you for Student of the Year this semester. I'm keeping that promise now, sweetheart."His voice broke.Night fell. People c

At dawn, my maternal grandparents arrived. The moment Nana burst through the door, she slapped Mom across the face. "I told you over and over! Sienna is Sienna, and Danny is Danny. It's too late for regrets now!"She looked at the bloodstained white dress on the couch and wailed. She then reached out and pulled Mom into her arms. The two of them clung to each other, sobbing so hard their bodies shook."My poor baby. My Sienna was such a sweet, good girl."Pop-Pop stood to the side without speaking, but tears streamed down his face too. He let out a long sigh and stepped forward to pat Dad's shoulder gently. Dad's eyes were swollen and red."I was wrong. I was so wrong..."Mom sobbed in Nana's arms, gasping for breath as she repeated those words over and over. They all broke down together. Once they calmed down, they began discussing what to do with my remains.Mom insisted on cremation. She wanted to keep a small portion of my ashes with her so I could stay by her side forever.

Late at night, Dad sat motionless on the couch, holding my white dress in one hand and the doll he had bought me in the other."Sienna, I brought you the doll I promised. I spent so long picking this one out. It's the pink one you love. I should've come home sooner. You were upset that I'm always working and never home with you, right?"I know I was wrong now. This punishment is a little too heavy for me to bear, Sienna. I don't think I can take it."Mom listened to his words, her eyes red. She sat down quietly beside him and patted Danny's shoulder gently before speaking."Sienna told me once before that she didn't want to take Danny's punishments anymore. But I didn't listen."I hurt Sienna because I was so focused on teaching Danny right from wrong. When Sienna was first born, all I wanted was for her to grow up safe and happy, so why did everything change after Danny was born?"When she was three, she said she was the happiest kid in the world. But after Danny came, she never

When Mom woke up again, the doctor told her the cause of my death. "Severe internal injuries causing excessive blood loss. Even if she had been found in time..."The doctor could not bring himself to finish. Those words pierced the hearts of everyone present."The child has been gone for several hours now. My condolences."Mom sat on the hospital corridor bench, her eyes hollow, clutching the white dress they had taken off my body.Dad sat with a blank expression, staring vacantly at his shoes.By the time they finished all the arrangements with the hospital and left, it was already dark.Dad drove Mom home. The silence in the car was unbearable. Neither of them said a word. Usually, at this time, I would be in the back seat playing with Danny, or Danny would be chattering away about what happened at school that day. Now, there was nothing. The car kept moving until Dad suddenly slammed on the brakes in front of a candy apple stand.Dad got out. Mom seemed to remember somethin

Before Dad could finish, Mom suddenly screamed. Dad froze mid-step. Mr. Osborn's trembling body went rigid as he saw the even more terrifying expression on Mom's face."How dare you do this to my baby?"Mom grabbed my skirt and pulled it down to cover my legs. Then, she lunged at Mr. Osborn, climbed on top of him, and started hitting him with both hands, screaming as she struck him over and over again. "You monster! How could you do this to her? She's so young, she's just a little girl!"She kept hitting him without losing any strength. She was completely falling apart. Dad finally pulled her off, and she went limp in his arms, collapsing to the floor. They both broke down as Mr. Osborn lay motionless on the ground.Sirens from police cars and ambulances filled the air at the same time.A neighbor had heard the commotion, checked on them, and immediately called the police. However, when the paramedics arrived and tried to take me away, Mom clutched me to her chest, refusing to le
