I’m really doing this… I thought to myself.

The courthouse smelled like old wood and different body scents. I sat in the back row of the gallery, watching my life get dissected by lawyers who charged more per hour than I made in a month.

Yes, I am doing this.

My lawyer, Jennifer Park, was good. Really good. But she wasn't miracle-worker good, and that's what I needed sitting across from Alexander's very famous, very cutthroat legal team. Three sharks in thousand-dollar suits who looked like they ate people like me for breakfast.

Well, they were eating me alive at the moment and I was sweating, I felt like dying.

I have to win this case or else…

"Your Honor," the lead shark was saying, "we have serious concerns about Mrs. Sterling's mental state. As you can see from the medical records, she was recently hospitalized following what can only be described as a complete psychological breakdown."

I wanted to scream. It wasn't a breakdown - I'd almost died from anaphylactic shock because hi

Maya was still buzzing with adrenaline even as she drove, flexing her bruised knuckles like she was proud of the damage."Did you see Victoria's face when I grabbed her throat?" she said, practically bouncing in the driver's seat. "I should have done that years ago. Actually, I should go back and finish the job.""Maya, please park" I said quietly. "I want to walk.""Walk? Walk where? It's getting dark, and you just had the worst day of your life.""I just need to go, Maya, please."Maya's face softened immediately. "Okay, but I'm driving you. It's like three miles from here.""No." I opened the car door. "I need to walk. I need to think.""Ivy, that's crazy. You're upset, you're not thinking straight—""Please." I looked at her, and something in my expression must have convinced her because she stopped arguing."Fine. But I'm following you in the car.""Don't. Just... go home. I'll call you when I get there."Maya looked like she wanted to protest, but I was already getting out of th

"Come on," Maya said, pulling me toward her car. "Let's go get your things. You're staying with me until we figure this out."I nodded numbly. The idea of going back to that house, facing Alexander's family, made my stomach turn. But I needed my clothes, my art supplies, the few personal things that were actually mine.Maya's car was parked three blocks away. During the walk, she ranted about corrupt judges and bought lawyers and rich men who think they own the world. I barely heard her. All I could think about was Lucas, probably at home wondering why Mommy wasn't there to tuck him in tonight."Maya," I said when we reached her beat-up Honda."Yeah?""When we get there... please stay in the car."She stopped with her hand on the door handle. "Like hell I'm staying in the car. Those people are going to try to intimidate you.""That's exactly why you need to stay in the car." I looked at her desperate, pleading face. "I can't have you getting arrested for assault. I can't lose you too.

Days later."The court awards full custody of Lucas Sterling to the plaintiff, Alexander Sterling."The judge's words hit me like a sledgehammer to the chest. I gripped the edge of the table so hard my knuckles went white, watching as Alexander's lawyers shook hands and patted each other on the back like they'd just won the lottery.Which, I guess they had. At my expense.I lost the case. And of course I would, I was fighting against Alexander Sterling, a wealthy and well known man in the country and I was just… me.Of course I was going to lose from the beginning. It’s just so painful."Furthermore," the judge continued, his voice echoing in the suddenly too-small courtroom, "Mrs. Sterling will be granted supervised visitation rights every other weekend, pending completion of a court-mandated psychological evaluation."Supervised visitation. They were treating me like I was dangerous to my own son.Jennifer placed her hand on my shoulder, but I barely felt it. Everything sounded muf

“Of course, let’s play. I’ve sent everything to the board at your company.”Alexander's face went completely white. His phone slipped from his hands and clattered to the floor."You didn't," he whispered."I did." I kept my voice steady even though my heart was racing. "Every recording. Every screenshot. Every piece of evidence I have about what you and Sophia have been doing to me.""Ivy, you don't understand," Alexander started, his voice getting desperate. "The board will never understand the context. They'll think-""They'll think exactly what they should think," Maya interrupted. "That you're an abusive husband who steals blood from his dying wife."Alexander ran his hands through his hair, pacing back and forth like a caged animal. "This will destroy everything. The Morrison deal, my reputation, the company-""Maybe you should have thought about that before you decided to play house with your girlfriend," I said. That's when Lucas suddenly jumped up from Sophia's arms and ran to

I pressed play on the first recording. Alexander's voice filled the room, cold and demanding."Sophia saved my mother's life. Now you can save hers. Stop being selfish."The sound of my own weak voice followed, barely audible through the phone speaker. "I won't donate blood to someone who tried to kill me."Then Alexander again: "You're too sensitive about everything. You're probably faking it for attention."Lucas stopped crying and looked up at his father with confusion. Even at five years old, he could hear the cruelty in those words.I just really wish I wasn’t doing this in front of my son."That's taken completely out of context," Alexander said quickly, his face flushing red. "You were being unreasonable. Sophia was dying.""Was I being unreasonable about this too?" I asked, playing the second recording. My voice: "You're giving your best friend my anniversary gift to you?"I had to get the sound from the security cameras situated in our home. If I’d known our marriage would co
