The man from the cemetery stood there like something out of my worst nightmares, his dark eyes fixed on Alexander with deadly calm. He was just as devastatingly handsome as I remembered - sharp cheekbones, perfectly styled black hair, expensive suit that probably cost more than most people made in a year. But it was those eyes that made my knees weak with terror. The same eyes that had looked down at me over the barrel of a gun.

Shit! How did he find me?!

I immediately wanted to run but my feet stood firmly on the floor, frozen.

"Let go!" Alexander gasped, trying to pull free. "Let go of me!"

But the man didn't respond. He simply applied steady pressure to Alexander's wrist, making a full grown man whimper in pain, tears in his eyes, while his gaze found mine over Alexander's shoulder.

The moment our eyes met, I felt like I'd been struck by lightning. He remembered me. Of course he remembered me. I was the woman who'd thrown herself in front of his gun, who'd taken a bullet meant for

  • My CEO Ex-Husband's Regret: Chasing His Dying Wife Back    45

Maya screamed into the pillow for what felt like forever, the sound muffled but still terrifying. When she finally pulled it away from her face, her cheeks were flushed and her eyes blazed with a fury I'd never seen before. Then she started punching it.Not gentle frustrated taps - full-force punches like she was trying to beat the stuffing out of it. Her fists slammed into the poor pillow over and over while she made these growling sounds that would have been funny under any other circumstances."Maya, what the hell happened?" I asked, scooting away from her on the couch as she continued her assault on the innocent pillow. She punched it three more times before throwing it across the room, where it knocked over a lamp. The crash seemed to snap something in her because suddenly she whirled around to face me, her chest heaving."That fucking bastard!" she screamed. "That gorgeous, sexy, piece of shit bastard!"Huh? Come again say what?I blinked. "Which bastard? There are so many to ch

I climbed the stairs to Maya's apartment, my new designer heels clicking against the worn concrete steps.Everything still felt surreal. It’s almost like a dream. But what definitely didn’t feel that way was HIM!That bastard! Each step reminded me of what had just happened - how I'd let Ares bully me again, manipulate me, control me. The anger built with every floor I climbed.Damn it. Damn him.I was a Blackwood now. I had power, money, influence. So why did I keep letting that psychotic bastard push me around like I was still the same broken woman who'd taken a bullet for Vincent?I fumbled with my keys at Maya's door, my hands still shaking from the encounter. The way he'd looked at me in that car, the way his thumb had traced my lip, the way my body had responded to his touch even while my mind screamed danger. What the hell was wrong with me?I pushed into the apartment and kicked off those ridiculous heels, letting them clatter across the floor. The silence felt strange after e

As Ares started the engine of his sleek black sports car, I gave him Maya's address through gritted teeth. The leather seat beneath me was perfectly designed, and I hated how the interior smelled like expensive leather mixed with that intoxicating cologne of his.The drive passed in tense silence, my mind still reeling from watching him systematically destroy my tires with that knife. The methodical way he'd moved from tire to tire, completely unbothered by my protests, kept replaying in my head. When he finally pulled up to Maya's modest apartment building, the contrast between his world and mine couldn't have been more obvious. But he didn't drive away. Instead, he put the car in park and turned to look at me."Why?" The word burst out of me before I could stop it, all the shock and anger from watching him slash my tires finally finding its voice."Why what, little birdie?""Why not just kill me?" My voice was shaking now, everything that had happened today catching up to me. "Why m

The moment stretched between us like a live wire, tension crackling in the air. I couldn't move, couldn't breathe, couldn't think about anything except the heat radiating from his body and the way his dark eyes seemed to see straight through me."Ivy?"The familiar voice cut through the spell like a knife. I jerked away from Ares so fast I nearly stumbled, my heart hammering as I turned toward the sound.Maya was standing at the entrance to the parking garage, her eyes scanning the area with obvious confusion. She looked tired, her nurse scrubs wrinkled from a long day, her hair pulled back in a messy ponytail. But it was the way she was looking right at me without a flicker of recognition that made my stomach drop."Maya," I called out, my voice shaky. She turned toward us, her eyes passing over me completely before settling on Ares with obvious wariness. Then she looked back at me, and I watched her brain try to process what she was seeing."I'm sorry, do I know you?" she asked poli

Before I could fully process what was happening, Ares had his hand on the small of my back, guiding me through the mall entrance with the confident authority of someone who owned everything he touched."W-Where are we going?" I asked, my voice still shaky from his whispered threat."Shopping," he said simply. "You want to look like a Blackwood? We're going to make sure you look like one.""And why are you helping me?" I demanded, digging my heels in. It felt like a trap. What the fuck did he mean WE are going shopping? He laughed. "Helping you? Oh no, little birdie. I'm just making sure everything is set for the show I'm about to watch."The fucking bastard! Before I could protest, he grabbed my wrist and pulled me toward the first store - the kind of place I'd only window-shopped at during my marriage to Alexander. Everything was sleek glass and marble, with clothes displayed like art pieces and price tags that probably cost thousands and thousands of dollars.A perfectly groomed sa
