Ordinary Day

“Good morning Carol, I greeted my assistant. Do I have a scheduled meeting for today except for Mr. Emerson?

“Good morning Bett, you don’t have any meeting after Mr. Emerson. Is there anything you want to add?

“No, it’s okay, when Mr. Emerson comes, let him in at my office”.

“Okay, do you need anything?

“Nothing, I’ll be heading to my office now.

---

Knock, knock …

“Come in, I answered at the door.

“Good morning Bett, I brought your usual coffee”. Cole greeted with coffee in his hands.

“Good morning Cole, come in and have a seat, oh thank you I forgot to ask Carol for this one you’re my savior.” I dramatically said.

Cole and I both settled in my small meeting area. We started to catch up first before we discuss our agenda for today.

“Cole I’m sorry yesterday, it really slip on my mind about our meeting. You know Caleb is so persistent, he doesn’t accept any rejection from me. Our meeting took longer than I expected and I don’t have any choice but to accompany him at lunch.

“No worries Bett, I know how handful Caleb can be. He’s something and no one can reject his charm. By the way, did you check your email? Our HR officially announced the new ownership and CEO of the company.

“I didn’t check mine yet. It’s good that they officially announced it, everyone can relax now, they become so anxious when the news circulated. Even though all the directors told them that there’s nothing to worry about but you know how the human mind works”.

“Yeah, you know for this past month our legal team took the pressure for this, and now we can breathe normally again”.

We started to discuss the contract of our new author, I told him the clauses that our author required. Time passed by and we are both into our discussion when my phone rang.

“Ring...Ring...

“Hello, this is Bettany”, I answered.

“Hello Ms. Wright, this is Candy Pierce”.

“Ms. Pierce, what a pleasure I’m supposed to call you after I meet with our legal team and you beat me on that”, I playfully told her.

“I called you regarding the signing of my contract. I’m leaving the country tomorrow for a vacation, can you send the contract by email and I will visit you after I come back?

“It’s okay no worries Ms. Peirce, how long you will be gone?

“Around one month at the most, you can still be in touch with me on my email if you have any urgent matter.

“Just enjoy your vacation, Ms. Peirce, everything will be okay we can finalize all of it when you come back.

“Thank you, Ms. Wright, I will visit you soon.

“Enjoy and have a safe journey”, and I hang up

After my phone call with Ms. Peirce, Cole is still present and looked at me with a question in his eyes.

“Sorry for that, Ms. Pierce will be out of the country for a month and I think we will finalize this contract after she comes back”.

“Oh, it’s okay I will finish the draft this evening, and if you want you can send it first to her, maybe she wants something to clarify.

“Yeah, she asked for the draft so I will send it to her just keep me updated on this one.

“Sure, no problem, it’s almost lunchtime let’s go and have a break.

“Wow time really flies that fast, okay I’m kinda hungry already.

“Where do you feel to eat?

“Let’s eat at the cafeteria, I kinda miss their food.

“Let’s go then.

We came out of my office and told my assistant that I would be having lunch with Cole.

---

Cafeteria

Before, I and my team usually eat in the cafeteria but recently my work took my time to go down to have my lunch. Sometimes I’m having a lunch meeting outside and most of the time Carol just orders me a take-out.

I miss the lively environment around the cafeteria, falling in line just to get the food, and their mouth-watering menu every day. It feels so good to have time to eat here again.

“I’m so excited to taste their food again”, I excitedly said to Cole while were waiting in line.

“I can see it; how long have you not been here?

“I think it’s almost two months, I’m outside most of the time. You know my schedule."

“Yeah, I couldn’t catch you all the time, I’m just lucky today I had a meeting with you.

“Not my fault, It’s our company's fault”. I tease him.

“No comment”, he teases back.

After a few minutes in line, we got our food and settled on the table, we continue to chat while we enjoy our food. Some of our colleagues and friends join us at our table.

“Hey Bett, long time”. Kevin my colleague and my friend as well.

“Kevin, yeah you know how my schedule works.” I sadly replied.

“Yeah, being a director most of your time will be occupied”. He teases

“Now that you said that I’m starting to regret my decision for accepting this position”.

“Oh, Bett don’t be, you deserve that position”, Grace chirped in, she's my friend as well.

“Ha, Ha, Ha, okay enough on me, how’s both of you doing? I avoided the topic myself.

“Well, I’m doing great, being handsome is just trouble sometimes”. He arrogantly said.

“Wow, I see Kevin is still the same, being into himself that much is really him”. I laughed at him.

“Bett, you are really lucky that you are not around that much, we are getting tired of hearing that from Kevin almost every day”. Grace tease

“Oh, come on Grace don’t tell me I’m not handsome, I'm just telling the truth right Cole”.

“Mate as far as I know I’m the handsome one here”. Cole teases back more.

Both I and Grace just laugh at them, we continue to tease each other while we continue eating. I’m missing the time when we always eat at the same time and at one table. We catch up on everything I missed when I’m not around. Being a director, spending time with my friends has become less and less but we still keep in touch. I just miss the things we usually do. Enjoy every moment with them and be carefree at all times.

I like how the story started and how the relationship of the main characters is progressing. Just as the author said, her English proficiency is still lacking but it does not take us away from enjoying the story. Good job!
