Chapter 8

Auteur: Harlow
Jessica had always thought about adopting a child, thinking that maybe then Chris might stay home to focus on the child.

Over the past few days, while taking care of Jordan, she had started to feel that adopting a child wasn’t such a bad idea after all—at the very least, it might keep Chris from wandering off.

To her, it might not be as important as a business deal, but to Chris, it could be a life-changing event.

Seeing how casual Jessica was about it, Shannon didn’t think much of it either and simply nodded.

But a week later, when Shannon saw Chris standing at the entrance of the Register Office, she was completely stunned.

“This... this is the ‘small matter’ Ms. Wilder mentioned?” she exclaimed, eyes wide in shock.

Wearing high heels, she walked up to Chris and hesitantly asked, “Sir, what’s this about?”

Seeing that the person who arrived wasn’t Jessica, Chris immediately felt displeased.

“Why are you here? Where is she?”

Shannon replied, “She went abroad last week—for the Ocean Conference. It’s a week-long event, she won’t be back until the weekend.”

As expected, his affairs were never as important as her business.

Shannon quickly took out her phone and called Jessica.

The person on the other end spoke in a difficult-to-understand language. Through the phone, Shannon could barely make anything out, but she could tell that Jessica sounded irritated.

“Ms. Wilder, do I really have to be the one to sign this?”

“If he tells you to sign it, then sign it.”

“But this... maybe it’s better to wait for you to come back?”

Jessica was holding her forehead with one hand and the phone with the other. When she noticed someone writing something on a piece of paper in front of her, her attention immediately shifted.

“No need. Just sign it. If money’s needed, just deduct it from the account. And don’t forget to pick me up from the airport this weekend.”

Shannon quickly switched back to work mode. “This weekend is Madam Linda’s birthday. Does Mr. Green still need to attend?”

She wasn’t sure what the situation was anymore.

At this rate, Chris and Jessica were getting a divorce, so he wouldn’t be Linda’s son-in-law anymore, and attending wouldn’t make sense.

“As the Wilder family’s son-in-law, if he doesn’t show up, people will laugh at us.” Jessica had just finished saying this when another question came her way, and she ended the call immediately.

Shannon gave a wry smile, while Chris, standing beside her, had heard everything.

He had thought they could part ways peacefully, but never expected Jessica wouldn’t even show up in person to finalize the divorce.

Chris had already resigned himself to it—there was no future for them anymore.

Since that was the case, there was no point in wasting time.

He turned and walked inside.

Shannon couldn’t keep up in her heels and carefully followed a few steps. She wanted to say something to comfort him, but thinking of Chris’s recent circumstances, she didn’t know what to say.

As Jessica’s personal secretary, Shannon naturally knew that Michael had returned to the country and that Ms. Wilder had been focused entirely on him and his daughter.

Meanwhile, Chris, as her husband, hadn’t even been going home.

For a marriage of several years to end like this—it was almost hilarious.

When their number was called, Shannon tried once again to call Jessica to explain the situation, but she didn’t pick up.

The staff at the Register Office didn’t even look up. They took the documents from Chris, checked them, and quickly stamped them.

“Sir, perhaps you two should discuss this more—”

Chris didn’t respond.

The staff worked efficiently. Two copies of the divorce certificates were handed over. Chris passed Jessica’s copy to Shannon.

Seeing how awkward Shannon looked, he offered some reassurance. “Don’t worry. She signed the divorce agreement herself. This has nothing to do with you. Even if you hadn’t come today, I would still have found a way to collect the certificate.”

Such a large-scale replacement meant that the chances of recovering the missing drugs were almost zero. More importantly, under the problems caused by the shortage, they had to immediately find a substitute medication — that was the real priority. They simply didn’t have the time to track down whoever had swapped the drugs. Their efforts had to focus on the hospitals that were now facing critical shortages. It seemed the person behind all this had already anticipated that.“There’s one more thing you need to prepare for,” Francesca said, her tone suddenly heavy, as if what she was about to say carried great importance.“Go on,” Chris replied.Francesca stayed silent for a few seconds. It sounded like she was flipping through some documents on the other end — the faint rustle of papers came through the line. After a pause, she finally said, “Nicole and Logan have conducted a small-scale review of potential substitute drugs. Nicole gave me an answer.”“The most effective substitute

“All right, there’s no point in discussing this any further today. Everyone can go now. Once you’re done eating, head back. All the reports from Hurricane Media have already been released. Indya, take the PR department and start managing the situation. Also, what’s going on with that variety show Blake was supposed to sign for recently? Why hasn’t the contract been finalized yet?”A while back, Sam and Shannon had negotiated a variety show deal for Blake — one that suited him well and that he was quite interested in joining. But so far, they hadn’t reached an agreement with the director, so the contract had never been delivered.“Blake’s going to attend a red carpet event in a couple of days,” Indya said. “Sam will be accompanying him. The contract will probably come through after the event, but he’s already agreed to participate.”Jessica tapped on the table. “Don’t put all your attention on your love life. He’s our company’s main artist, and every project is centered around him.

After he finished speaking, it was as if he had completed some sort of mission. He began crawling forward again, struggling even as the bodyguards held him down. He looked up at the two people sitting in the chairs.“You said you’d let me go! You said once I answered, I could leave! Let me out — let me out! Please, let me out!!”Jessica sat in her chair, staring at the shadow of the man on the ground for a long while. Then she rose swiftly to her feet, and Chris followed her out.The corridor outside was still pitch dark. The sound of the door opening made the motion-sensor lights flicker faintly. The bodyguards remained hidden in the shadows. Jessica and Chris stood there — the only two living figures in that darkness.“Do you think he’s really insane or just pretending? Is what he said believable?” Jessica asked.Chris replied, “When I looked into his eyes, they were flickering but still focused — that means he hasn’t lost his mind. It’s probably just a physiological reaction f

“Later on, we felt we couldn’t delay any longer. All the measurement data had already come out, so we planned to propose sending the construction team over. But not long after that, the project was bought by your company. Heh… at that time, I thought you must have fallen into some kind of trap — who would take over such a half-finished project?”Anthony suddenly laughed as he spoke, as if he had gone mad. He raised a hand and clutched at his own hair.“Everyone knew that they kept that project only to use it later. I didn’t work at Hall Group for very long, so I didn’t know much, but that chairman of theirs never looked like a real boss to me. He was always timid, shrinking back like a quail all day long. I figured there had to be someone behind him.”To everyone else, Thomas had always seemed calm and in control — except for that one public breakdown that ruined his reputation and got him kicked out by Jaden. Other than that, every time he appeared, he represented the entire Hall f

It wasn’t until Jessica strode quickly to a certain door that someone finally appeared from the right side — a figure hidden in the darkness, hands clasped respectfully in front of him as he greeted softly, “Ms. Wilder.”“How is he?” she asked.“That man has been locked up the whole time,” the subordinate replied. “He seems a little mentally unstable, but his physical condition is fine. According to your orders, we’ve made sure he doesn’t die.”At the mention of this person, Jessica frowned. Her expression turned cold and displeased. “Can he still talk? He hasn’t gone completely mad, has he?”“We haven’t interfered much. Meals have been delivered regularly — that shouldn’t be a problem.”Now that they could finally clear up their doubts, they could get rid of Anthony afterward.“Open the door.”It was the same small room. When the door opened, a shadowy figure lunged toward it — but before he could reach the doorway, someone pulled him back. A hoarse, broken scream tore through

Some of the patients’ medications could be replaced, but some patients were either allergic to the substitute drugs or those medications were their regular prescriptions, and the current stock was not enough to last for long.“How long will it take for Nicole’s results to come out?”“They said it would take at least one to two days. I called Nicole over to help, so it might be a bit faster, but definitely not today — the earliest would be tomorrow. We’re already on our way to the academy, so let Francesca figure something out when we get there.”Soon, Shannon hung up the phone and came in from outside. She said, “I’ve confirmed with the pharmaceutical factory — they said there’s no problem with the medicine and they haven’t changed the batch numbers. If the drugs had been replaced, the drug administration would have sent a notice, but they haven’t received anything. So the medicine they delivered was intact; the problem must have come from someone else.”That person had only delive
