Chapter 1

A week before my bonding ceremony, my sister went to try on her dress for it. Somehow, I ended up answering a call on her phone from my mate-to-be, asking her to meet him at a hotel.

The moment I heard the voice on the other end, I froze.

He called out a couple of times. When no one answered, he hung up.

The room went silent. I could hear my heartbeat pounding louder and louder, my chest growing so tight that I couldn’t catch my breath.

Although I had never seen this number before, perhaps Dylan had bought an extra SIM card without my knowing.

I followed the number in her message history and found their texts to be extremely intimate.

He called her “darling” and sent flirty, shameless lines—some so bold that they made me blush.

It didn’t match the unromantic Dylan I knew.

Then, a thought flashed through my mind.

What if this wasn’t Dylan? Maybe it was just someone who sounded like him.

After all, Leah was my sister. I grew up with her, and she was the closest werewolf to me besides my parents.

When she learned I was going to join the Northern Pack after the bonding ceremony, she cried in my arms for a long time.

“Florence, I don’t want you to leave. If you go, it’ll just be me at home.

“That Dylan doesn’t deserve you! And what if they bully you in the Northern Pack? If that guy dares lay a hand on you, I’ll fly over and beat him up myself!”

That night, we cried ourselves to sleep over our separation. As dawn approached, I took off the charm I’d always carried with me and fastened it around her neck.

I wiped her tears and said, “Don’t worry. We’ll definitely see each other again. I’m counting on you to help me at my bonding ceremony.”

Those promises were still vivid in my memory. I couldn’t bring myself to believe my sister would ever do something like this.

Then the strange number sent a single question mark. My fingers spasmed like I’d been shocked, and I immediately closed the phone.

I hesitated before finding Dylan’s number on my phone and calling him on video.

A moment later, he answered.

Dylan’s face filled the screen, smiling sweetly. “What’s wrong? Miss me already?”

He turned the camera toward his friends, who all waved at me.

“Florence! Missing our Dylan? Don’t worry. Once we finish this business meeting, we’ll send him right back to you.”

“With us around, he won’t have time to fool around.”

“Come on, guys, no way. Everyone knows Dylan only has eyes for Florence.”

They were Dylan’s puphood friends, the heirs of the pack elders, and his support once he became Alpha.

Dylan’s smile softened. “I know you miss me. But don’t worry, once I wrap up this deal, I’ll head straight home.”

Looking at his warm smile, the panic in my chest slowly loosened, replaced by a wave of warmth.

“No rush. Work is important. You’re going to be Alpha, after all.”

Shame pricked me. I couldn’t believe I had suspected Dylan over a random phone call. We were about to hold our bonding ceremony.

“I wanted to ask you something,” I said.

The familiar voice on Leah’s phone call replayed in my mind.

“What kind of she-wolf do you think Leah is?” I tried to keep my tone casual. “She might be seeing someone.”

Dylan blinked, clearly surprised. “I’ve only met her a few times. How would I know what kind of she-wolf she is?

“As for whether she’s dating someone, that’s got nothing to do with me.”

He let out a light laugh.

“Anyway, I’ve got contracts to go over. I’ll hang up first. I’ll bring you a gift when I get back.”

He ended the call.

I sat on the couch, everything around me feeling too quiet.

That one phone call had buried itself like a thorn deep in my heart.

The Northern Pack’s Alpha flew into a rage when he learned Dylan had not only destroyed our relationship but also cost them a long-standing alliance.“You beast, look at the mess you made! Do you have any idea how much this loss will cost our pack?!”Dylan kneeled silently in the center of the hall, letting Alpha hurl object after object at him. When Alpha finally exhausted his anger, he slumped into his chair, breathing heavily.“Your ability and judgment can’t compare to your younger brother’s. If you weren’t my firstborn and had the chance to strengthen our pack through your relationship with Florence, I would never have chosen you as my heir.”Cold sweat beaded along Dylan’s forehead as he forced himself not to tremble.Alpha continued, “Since things have come to this, your brother will inherit my position as Alpha.”Dylan’s pupils contracted sharply, and he hurriedly said, “It’s not like that. Florence is just angry. As long as I coax her, she’ll come back.”Alpha’s expres

Leah’s face turned pale. She cried and begged Dad not to abandon her, but to him, her tears were nothing more than crocodile tears. When she realized her pleading was useless, she suddenly snorted.“So this is how it is. You say you treat us equally, but in the end, you still side with your real daughter.”Leah stared at me with burning hatred. It felt like she wanted to swallow me whole.“Are you happy now? You’ve always been like this, taking everything from me. But you already have everything: parents who love you and friends. You’ll even be the future Luna of a pack.“But what about me? I lost my parents young. And now, all I wanted was Dylan, yet you still had to take him from me!”Her face twisted. Standing here now, I didn’t even recognize the sister I grew up with.“Why, Florence?!“Is it because you’re the Alpha’s daughter that you think you’re better than me?“I hate you! I hate you! Why don’t you just die?!”We had been inseparable once. I had even given her the pr

When I stepped off the plane, I saw my parents waiting at the airport.Their eyes were full of worry; my mom’s eyes were even red from crying. The instant I saw them, I couldn’t hold all the humiliation and heartbreak back anymore. I ran straight into their arms.“Dad, Mom!”It was only once I was in front of them that I dared to cry so uncontrollably. Mom stroked my hair as I choked out, “I don’t want to go through with the mating alliance with Dylan.“And I don’t want to see Leah either.“I don’t want anything. I just want to come home!”Dad just came saying over and over again, “Let’s go home, then! Home it is! Our baby girl doesn’t need to suffer anything like this ever again.”Mom wiped her tears with a handkerchief. “My sweet girl, this is my fault. I pushed you into the fire pit myself. I failed you. I’m sorry for letting you suffer.”I shook my head. “It’s not your fault, Mom.”Dad clenched his fists, veins bulging on his forehead. “That bastard dares to treat you l

I turned to leave, but Dylan grabbed my arm.His face was pale, looking nothing like the confident, radiant werewolf he used to be.“Florence, let me explain,” he pleaded, clutching my wrist with fear flickering openly in his eyes.I stood there silently. Through everything I had seen and heard, I wanted to know what kind of story he could come up with.Sure enough, Dylan only glanced at Leah and shifted all the blame onto her.“It was all Leah. She seduced me. I’m innocent.“That day I went to your house looking for you, you weren’t home, but Leah was. She slipped something into my drink and climbed into my bed. Afterward, she threatened me. She said that if I didn’t agree to keep seeing her, she’d tell you everything.”Dylan held my hand tightly, eyes full of false innocence. “Our bonding ceremony is coming up. I couldn’t have anything ruin it at such a critical time. I had no choice.“I really love you, Florence.“None of this is my fault.”I had mentally prepared myself f

“Florence?”When I didn’t respond, Dylan must have sensed something was off.“Why aren’t you saying anything?”I forced myself to hold back the emotions that were about to burst out of me. My voice came out hoarse as I asked, “Dylan, do you still remember the oath you made to me?“Do you remember saying you’d never betray me for the rest of your life?”He once stood before the statue of the Moon Goddess and swore, “I, Dylan, swear before the sacred Moon Goddess that I will love only Florence for the rest of my life and never betray her. If I break this oath, may I be denied true love forever and die alone.”I believed him. I gave him all my love with no reservations and treated him as the most important one in my life. Now I watched as his hands roamed all over Leah. Leah was pressed against him, brushing her body slowly against his sensitive spots.Dylan fought to keep his voice steady as he said, “Florence, don’t overthink it. I’m coming back tomorrow.”He pushed Leah agains

Seeing the cold, careless disdain expression on Leah’s face, the image of a sweet, obedient sister I had always treasured shattered completely in my mind.Just moments ago, I had been feeling guilty about saying the wrong thing, terrified that I’d upset her and she’d ignore me.However, in Leah’s eyes, all of that made me look like a pathetic clown. The crack in my heart only grew wider.I’d always known since I was young that I had a werewolf waiting for me somewhere far away in the Northern Pack. The werewolves at home would tease, saying, “Your future mate has to be powerful. And since he’s the future Alpha of the Northern Pack, she’ll become the Luna.”As a child, I didn’t know what a Luna was, nor what kind of werewolf he might be.But the more werewolves kept mentioning him, I began to grow curious about this distant mate tied to my fate. That was how the seed of love was planted. The first time we met was in the Moonlight Forest, where I had been attacked by rogue wolv
