Chapter 39

Brothers at War

The palace gates exploded inward.

Stone and splintered wood flew through the air as thousands of Blood Wolves stormed the capital. Their crimson banners covered the horizon like a sea of blood.

The kingdom had fallen into war.

"Defend the capital!" General Kael roared.

Wolf warriors rushed to the walls, arrows filling the sky. The first wave of Blood Wolves crashed into the defenders with terrifying force. Steel clashed against steel. Howls echoed through the streets as civilians fled toward the underground shelters.

Inside the palace courtyard, Ethan stood motionless, staring at the First Prince.

The man who had called him...

Brother.

The First Prince slowly lowered his crimson sword.

"I didn't come to kill you, Ethan."

"I came to bring you home."

Ethan stepped forward.

"My home is here."

A faint smile crossed the prince's face.

"Is it?"

"You've lived among humans... fought beside wolves... but you've never belonged to either."

His eyes hardened.

"You belong to our blood."

Aria moved to Ethan's side.

"He has already chosen."

The prince looked at her.

"The Moon Queen speaks of choice?"

"You know the prophecy."

"If he stays with you, he dies."

"If he comes with me... he lives."

The words struck Ethan like a blade.

Aria's fingers tightened around his hand, but she said nothing.

She couldn't deny the prophecy.

---

A deafening roar interrupted them.

The ancient black gate beneath the kingdom shook violently.

Cracks spread across the ground beneath the palace.

Dark energy burst into the sky.

"The seal is weakening," Kael shouted.

"We don't have much time!"

---

The First Prince raised one hand.

The Blood Wolves immediately stopped fighting.

An eerie silence settled over the battlefield.

"I'll make you an offer, little brother."

"Come willingly."

"I'll spare every soul in this kingdom."

"If you refuse..."

He pointed his sword toward the city.

"By sunset, not one stone will remain standing."

The citizens looked toward Ethan.

Children.

Mothers.

Old warriors.

Every life rested on his decision.

Ethan lowered his head.

His fists trembled.

---

Aria stepped in front of him.

"No."

The First Prince frowned.

"This isn't your choice."

She lifted the Moon Crown from her head.

Its silver light illuminated the battlefield.

"As Queen..."

"I will never trade the man I love for peace built on fear."

The warriors behind her roared in agreement.

The First Prince sighed.

"I hoped you wouldn't say that."

He snapped his fingers.

The ground beneath Ethan suddenly exploded.

Chains of crimson energy shot upward, wrapping around his arms and legs.

"Ethan!" Aria screamed.

He struggled, but the chains grew tighter.

The prince walked calmly toward him.

"You were born with the Blood Seal."

"No prison can hold you..."

"...except one forged from your own power."

He placed a hand on Ethan's forehead.

Instantly, Ethan's memories flooded back.

He remembered running through burning palace halls as a child.

His mother hiding him inside a secret tunnel.

The First Prince standing at the entrance, tears in his mismatched eyes.

"I'll find you," his brother had whispered.

"No matter how many lifetimes it takes."

The memory vanished.

Ethan gasped for air.

"You..."

"You weren't trying to kill me..."

The prince smiled sadly.

"I've been trying to save you."

Before Ethan could ask another question, the ground split open.

A monstrous hand burst from beneath the palace.

It was larger than the palace tower itself.

Black scales covered its skin.

Golden veins pulsed beneath its surface.

A single claw crushed an entire watchtower as if it were made of paper.

The soldiers froze.

"What... is that?" someone whispered.

The First Prince's smile disappeared.

"No..."

"It woke up too early."

A thunderous voice echoed from the abyss.

"So..."

"My sons..."

"Have finally reunited."

Every person on the battlefield looked toward the opening in horror.

Slowly...

A colossal figure began to rise from beneath the kingdom.

Its golden eyes locked onto Ethan and the First Prince.

Then it smiled.

A smile filled with ancient hatred.

To be continued...
