Chapter 4

I walked into the kitchen in silence and started to make dinner.

My phone buzzed.

[I’m too excited! You don’t even have to get a ticket. I’ll come and pick you up.]

I had just replied to the text when Gwen walked in. She looked at my phone and asked in confusion, “Who are you talking to?

“Aside from me, who do you have to talk to?”

I was just about to say something when she waved the files in her hand.

“By the way, I’m taking all these as Vincent’s birthday present.”

I trembled in shock and lost control of my knife. I slashed my hand open.

“What are you doing?”

Vincent walked forward to hug Gwen. However, she turned around anxiously and covered Vincent’s eyes.

“Don’t look.

“You’re afraid of blood.

“This is your birthday present. Happy birthday!”

Vincent took the files and flipped through them. Then, he looked at me smugly.

“Isn’t this the core technology developed by the Reid family? Why are you giving me their lifelong project?”

“Zac can’t use it anyway now that he’s disabled. It’ll be better to give it to someone who can really use it.

“Besides, isn’t your company in need of something like this? I want to help you!” Gwen said lovingly and ignored me.

Everyone knew that Reid Corporation and Scott Corporation were the biggest rivals in the city.

Everyone also knew that this core technology was what could revive Reid Corporation.

I was overwhelmed with emotion. I lunged forward as I tried to take that file back.

Gwen shielded him out of habit. Then, she slapped me.

I tumbled backward from the impact. The knife pierced through my left arm.

My left arm had already been permanently injured because of Gwen, and somehow, she ended up injuring it again.

Gwen looked frantic. She quickly walked forward and squatted next to me.

She wanted to touch my wound. Her voice was already trembling as she said, “Zac, how are you feeling? I didn’t mean to!”

When she saw the blood oozing out of my hand, she frantically tried to press her hands against my wound.

“Let me take you to the hospital. Let’s go right now!”

Before she could help me up, Vincent crouched down next to me and pressed down on my wound. He chuckled and said, “Gwen, you’re confused because you’re too anxious. I studied medicine.

“Look, his wound is not that deep! He’s probably putting up an act so you’ll feel sorry for him.

“Most of our guests are here. We have something important to announce tonight.”

With just a few words, Gwen calmed down.

She looked at me angrily.

“Zac, how dare you put up an act just to gain my sympathy?

“Let’s go! Ignore him!”

Gwen stood up and walked out of the kitchen. Then, she pressed the switches.

The next second, the door to the kitchen was locked. It was completely dark around me.

I extended my hand, but I could not even see a thing.

Memories surfaced in my mind, and an inexplicable sense of fear overwhelmed me. I trembled uncontrollably.

I kept slamming against the door.

“Gwen, let me out!”

I had a serious case of claustrophobia. Gwen knew it better than anyone else.

I heard her voice as she declared to the crowd of guests, “Hello everyone, this is my husband of many years, Vincent.”

With a loud bang, everyone looked at the entrance.

A woman who looked exactly like Gwen barged in.

Gwen stood up abruptly and stared at her. She trembled.

“Who are you?

“Why do you look exactly like me?!”
