The contact on Eleanor’s lips lasted only a few seconds. Yet to Eleanor, time felt as though it had come to a complete standstill.

Her body froze. Her heart was beating so violently that she felt as if anyone nearby could hear it. A deep flush spread across her cheeks, leaving her struggling to draw breath.

She looked up to find Archie gazing at her with a soft expression, but she remained rooted to the spot, stiff as a board.

What on earth had just happened?

Why had Archie kissed her? She was nothing more than an ordinary staff member at his company. Their relationship was strictly professional—that of a boss and a subordinate.

In fact, Eleanor only ever interacted with Archie during shared meetings.

Beyond that, there was no closeness whatsoever. So why had he taken the liberty of kissing her out of nowhere? Archie had truly lost his mind!

Archie’s expression remained gentle as he looked at Eleanor, but it hardened instantly as his eyes turned back to Greta.

Greta’s jaw tightened. “You’ve completely lost your mind, Archie!” Her face flushed bright red with fury.

She pointed a finger back and forth between Archie and Eleanor. “The two of you...” Greta shook her head slowly. “I don’t believe this.”

A faint smirk played on Archie’s lips. “No one asked for your opinion.”

“One thing is clear—I never joke about what I say.” Archie’s gaze sharpened on Greta.

Eleanor nearly choked when she heard those words.

Our relationship?

Eleanor stared at him in disbelief. Was her boss—a man infamous throughout the company for being cold and uncompromising—really lying right through his teeth?

She was utterly speechlessness. Then she heard Archie speak again.

“I have already chosen the woman I am going to marry. And I will never accept the arranged marriage between us.” Archie’s gaze remained sharp and unwavering as he stared Greta down.

Greta’s hands balled into tight fists at her sides. Her jaw clenched, her face burning red with rage.

How could she possibly lose to an ordinary woman like Eleanor?

She couldn’t accept it; Greta felt deeply humiliated by Archie’s decision.

Her glare toward Eleanor was no longer merely condescending—it was an explosive rage at having to lose to a woman who wasn't even remotely on her level.

Greta’s eyes flashed with venom as she fixed them on Eleanor.

Pointing a finger at Eleanor, she demanded, “Are you serious about choosing her over me?”

Archie stared back blankly at the hysterical woman.

His silence served as a crystal-clear answer.

Greta let out a forced, theatrical laugh to vent her utter disbelief.

“Fine.” Greta’s eyes gleamed with malice.

She reached out and snatched a glass of water off the table. Without hesitation, she splashed its contents straight toward Eleanor’s face.

Before Eleanor could even comprehend what was happening, shock took over as Archie stepped directly in front of her, shielding her from the incoming water.

Now, the back of Archie’s expensive suit jacket was drenched.

Eleanor stared in shock at Archie, who had actually protected her. Archie’s expression made his displeasure abundantly clear.

Greta gasped, hastily setting the glass back down.

“You...” Greta seethed with frustration that Archie would go so far as to cover Eleanor. Finally, she grabbed her purse and stormed out without another word, leaving Eleanor and Archie alone.

After Greta’s departure, Eleanor continued to stare at Archie, who stood directly in front of her, impossibly close.

“Why did you do that, sir? Why did you drag me into your mess by claiming I’m your lover?” Eleanor asked, her eyes full of confusion.

“In that case, marry me.” Archie looked at her with utmost seriousness.

Eleanor gasped, staring at him in utter disbelief.

“Y-You must be joking, Mr. Richter.” She stared at him incredulously. A second later, she let out a soft laugh, convincing herself he was only teasing. “Are you still caught up in the charade you were playing, sir? You really gave me a fright.”

Archie’s gaze never wavered. He kept his eyes locked on her before speaking again. “I am entirely serious. Marry me. Since you’re already involved in my mess, we might as well see it through.”

Eleanor’s laugh cut off abruptly. Her face stiffened, her eyes widening in disbelief.

“Why on earth should I marry you? I may be your subordinate at the company, Mr. Richter, but that doesn’t mean you can just propose to me out of nowhere.” Eleanor delivered a firm, implicit rejection.

“Then what if the reason isn’t because we’re boss and employee, but to save your pride?”

Eleanor went quiet, staring at Archie as a deep frown formed on her forehead.

“What do you mean, sir?” she pressed.

Archie’s eyes grew intense as he heard her question, and he explained, “Didn’t your fiancé just throw you away for another woman? By marrying me, you can silence everyone who ever looked down on you.”

Eleanor gasped. “You heard all of that?”

She stared at him, unable to believe it. How could Archie have overheard the argument between her and Julian?

Eleanor had to admit her voice had been raised earlier. Especially when Julian had blatantly insulted her—mocking the fact that she had been cast aside and disowned by her own father, even going so far as to say she was nothing more than a bargaining chip in a business deal.

She had been deeply hurt by those insults. They were targeted directly at her, tearing her heart to pieces.

“A contract marriage. What do you say? Do we have a deal? We’ll only be married for one year, and after that, you’ll be free.” Archie spoke again after a heavy silence fell between them.

Eleanor remained quiet, lost in thought. As furious as she was with Julian, was marrying Archie really her only way out?

Yet, when she recalled how her father had treated her all these years... perhaps a contract marriage with Archie wasn’t such a bad idea after all.

Eleanor looked up at Archie. She swallowed hard before speaking. “Alright, I accept. It’s strictly a contract marriage, right?”

Eleanor finally finished her last bite in a hurry. After tidying the food containers and leftover wrappers back into the paper bag, she let out a long breath."I'll be returning to my division now, sir," Eleanor announced first to take her leave.Noticing a subtle nod from Archie, she exhaled a sigh of relief and promptly exited his office.A wave of relief swept through her chest the moment her feet stepped outside Archie's office, having felt thoroughly intimidated the entire time she was in there.Eleanor quickly went to the elevator and headed down to the fifth floor where her division was located. Upon arriving, she walked down the corridor toward her cubicle in the planning division to resume her remaining tasks. However, just as she turned the corner near the room partition, Eleanor's steps came to a sudden halt as she saw who was standing directly in her path.Abigail was already standing there, arms crossed over her chest, pinning her with an icy, piercing glare."How marvelo

Eleanor clasped her hands tightly in her lap.She kept her knees together, sitting stiffly upright.Being inside the spacious, dark-toned executive office of the President Director made her intensely nervous.Forget moving around—even breathing normally felt exceedingly difficult for Eleanor. Her eyes stole an awkward glance toward the large executive desk in the corner of the room. There sat Archie, calmly settled in his high-backed chair, his fingers steadily flipping through page after page of important documents as if Eleanor's presence on the sofa didn't bother him in the slightest.Feeling the atmosphere around them becoming increasingly suffocating, Eleanor finally gathered the courage to speak up. "Mr. Richter..."Archie didn't answer. He didn't even shift his gaze away from the papers before him.Eleanor swallowed hard, trying to soothe her suddenly dry throat. "If... if the food arrives, may I take mine and eat at my own desk, sir? I feel uncomfortable staying here."Still,

Sam suppressed a chuckle at the unusually loud growl coming from Eleanor's stomach. However, he immediately lowered his head upon catching the sharp, icy glare Archie shot his way.Archie shifted his gaze straight back to Eleanor. His face remained expressionless as he looked at her hanging her head in shame."Sam," Archie said flatly, without glancing back at his assistant. "Buy lunch right now, then bring it directly to my office.""Understood, sir," Sam replied promptly.Eleanor snapped her head up, her eyes widening in surprise. Her embarrassment instantly gave way to confusion. Before she could process the order, Archie spoke again in his usual impassive tone."Follow me to my office," Archie instructed, locking eyes with Eleanor in a way that left no room for debate.Eleanor gasped, looking at Archie with clear shock on her face. "F-For what reason should I go to your office, Mr. Richter?"Her sudden question caused Sam—who had just turned to leave—to halt in his tracks. He glan

Eleanor wiped a bead of sweat from her brow with the back of her hand. She had just finished organizing the files Abigail had requested, sorting them meticulously by date and sequence.Glancing at the wall clock above the doorway, she saw the short hand had already passed one in the afternoon. The employee lunch hour had begun an hour ago.Taking a deep breath, Eleanor lifted the heavy stack of documents once more, her arms beginning to ache from the strain. She stepped out of the planning division toward the elevator, heading down to the archive storage room. When the elevator doors parted on the lower floor, Eleanor's steps felt heavy as she walked down the corridor toward the main archive room located at the bottom level of the building.Eleanor pushed open the heavy wooden door of the archive room with her free elbow. Inside the space lined with row upon row of metal cabinets, a middle-aged male staff member looked up at her."Excuse me. I'm returning these report files," Eleanor

Archie’s luxury car cut through the city streets as traffic began to build up.Inside the vehicle, a heavy silence lingered. Eleanor stared straight out the window, watching the soaring skyscraper of Richter Company gradually come into view in the distance. Her heart began to race once again as she pondered how she ought to conduct herself at the office later."Mr. Richter," Eleanor called out, breaking the silence, her voice exceptionally cautious.Archie kept his eyes fixed on the road ahead. "What is it?""Please drop me off by the side of the road near the bus stop right after that intersection, sir," Eleanor said, pointing toward a bus stop a few hundred meters before the company's main entrance.Archie briefly glanced over at her. "Why drop off there? We are heading to the same building.""In accordance with the contract draft we signed last night, sir," Eleanor explained, her voice low yet firm. "We agreed to keep our relationship a secret at the office. If any staff or employe

Eleanor twirled her fingers nervously in her lap, trying to suppress her overwhelming embarrassment. She kept her head down, not daring to look at Archie, who stood right in front of her."I'm sorry, Mr. Richter. I swear, I really didn't realize I was hugging you," Eleanor said softly, her voice barely audible above the rapid beating of her own heart.Archie stared down at Eleanor in silence. Finally, he sat up and swung his legs onto the floor.Standing up, he said, "Go wash up."Without looking back at her, Archie added, "Mother is likely waiting for us in the dining room. I don't like keeping her waiting for too long."Eleanor gave a few gentle nods, still not daring to make eye contact with him.She watched Archie's shadow move away from the bed, followed by the sound of the bathroom door shutting.Eleanor let out a soft sigh of relief, glad that Archie hadn't been angry over her unseemly behavior.
