Loyalties in Question

DMITRI

The drive to the airport was tense, my hands gripping the steering wheel as I tried to process what I'd witnessed at the hospital.

In fifteen years of working for Xenois Kingston, I'd never seen him look at his wife the way he had today..

Hell, I'd never seen him look at anyone that way – not even Sophia.

My phone kept buzzing with directions to the pickup area, and I pulled up to see a familiar figure standing near the curb, designer luggage scattered around her feet. Sophia Hale looked exactly as I remembered, beautiful, cold , ruthless and currently radiating the kind of fury that made smart men keep their distance.

I stepped out of the car and approached cautiously as I greeted her. "Ms. Hale."

She turned around, her blue eyes furious as she spoke. "Dmitri! Finally. Where the hell is Xenois? What kind of game is he playing?"

"No game, ma'am," I said, moving to collect her luggage from where it was.

"Mr. Kingston was in a car accident this

Chapter 108XENOIS I spun around, my heart racing, but there was no one there. The bathroom was empty except for me.When I turned back to the mirror, he was still there in the reflection, standing behind me like a ghost."You're not real," I said aloud, my voice shaking. "You're just my imagination, my fear manifesting because of the memories I saw last night.""Am I?" the reflection asked, and his voice was my voice but colder, emptier. "Or am I the truth you've been running from? The reality of who you actually are underneath this desperate performance of domesticity?""I'm not performing," I said, gripping the sink harder. "This is who I am now. Who I choose to be."The old Xenois laughed, and the sound was chilling—utterly devoid of genuine humor. "You think you have a choice? Xenois, you are me. I'm not some separate entity you can banish. I'm you. I'm the foundation everything else is built on.""No," I said firmly. "You're who I was. Past tense. I'm different now.""Because o

Chapter 107CELESTE Xenois crouched down to his level. "I might have to work this afternoon, buddy. But I'll definitely be home for dinner. And we can play that new game we got before bedtime, okay?""Okay," Soren agreed, throwing his arms around Xenois's neck for a tight hug.I saw Victoria Ashworth across the courtyard, watching us with an expression I couldn't quite read. After yesterday's confrontation, I'd expected her to avoid eye contact, but instead, she seemed to be studying Xenois with something like apprehension.Good. Maybe word of his activities last night had already started to spread, even reaching the legitimate world we pretended to operate in.After the boys disappeared into the school building, Xenois and I walked back to the car together. He looked thoughtful, almost troubled."What's wrong?" I asked once we were back in the vehicle."I was just thinking about how normal this feels," he said. "Dropping the boys at school, promising to be home for dinner, planning

Chapter 106CELESTE The alarm went off at 6:00 AM, and I was already awake. I'd slept fitfully, plagued by dreams of shadowy clubs and cold-eyed strangers, waking every few hours to check that Xenois was still beside me, still breathing, still real.He was deeply asleep, his face peaceful in a way it hadn't been when he'd first come home last night. I watched him for a moment, studying the familiar features—the strong jaw, the dark lashes, the slight furrow between his brows that never quite went away even in sleep. This was my husband. Not the monster who'd walked through the Obsidian Club last night, but this man right here—vulnerable and human and trying so hard to be better than who he'd been.I slipped out of bed carefully, not wanting to wake him. He needed the rest after everything he'd been through. In the bathroom, I studied my own reflection—I looked tired, dark circles under my eyes, tension visible in the set of my shoulders. But I had a role to play today. Mother, wife,

Chapter 105CELESTE"Probably," he admitted. "Or at the very least, make sure he can never betray anyone again. Celeste, he put you and the boys in danger. He's the reason Tommy got shot. He's responsible for people dying. I can't just let that go."I knew he was right. I knew that in the world he operated in, betrayal of this magnitude couldn't be ignored or handled through legal channels. But hearing him talk so matter-of-factly about killing someone was still jarring."There's more," he continued. "Marcus Pemberton—the investor I turned down, the father from the school who defended Victoria—he's been one of the buyers of Bennett's information. He's behind the initial attempt on our family."The news hit me like a physical blow. Marcus Pemberton. I'd stood next to that man just yesterday at the parent-child games. I'd smiled politely while he defended his horrible daughter's mother for pushing me. And all along, he'd been planning to have my entire family killed because Xenois had r

  • My Contracted Husband, The Heartless CEO has Amnesia?!   Chapter 104

Chapter 104CELESTEI wanted to believe him. God, I wanted to believe him so badly. But I'd spent six years married to the other version of him, six years learning to recognize when he was lying or manipulating or just saying what he thought I wanted to hear."Tell me what happened," I said. "Not the details if they're too dark, but tell me what you did tonight. I need to understand."He nodded slowly, then moved to the living room couch, sinking down onto it like the weight of the evening was finally catching up to him. I followed but sat in the armchair across from him rather than beside him."I threatened people," he began, his voice low. "I used fear and intimidation to extract information. I..." He paused, seeming to struggle with the words. "I stabbed someone. Drove a knife through their hand to make them talk."I felt my stomach turn, but I forced myself to stay calm, to keep listening."I threatened families, including children," he continued, not looking at me now, staring at

  • My Contracted Husband, The Heartless CEO has Amnesia?!   Chapter 103

Chapter 103CELESTE The clock on the living room wall read 11:47 PM when I heard the car pull into the driveway. I'd been sitting on the couch for the past three hours, unable to focus on anything, my stomach twisted in knots of worry and fear.Alina sat across from me, the paperwork for the rescued trafficking victims spread across the coffee table between us, though neither of us had looked at it for at least an hour. She'd shown up at seven as scheduled for our debrief, taken one look at my face, and immediately understood that I needed company more than I needed paperwork."That's them," she said, standing and moving to the window to check. Her hand went automatically to her concealed weapon—a habit I'd grown used to over the years. "SUV, armored, Kingston security detail. It's him."I was already on my feet, my heart pounding. "How does he look?"Alina peered through the curtain, her trained eyes assessing. "Walking under his own power. No visible injuries. Dmitri and Sloane are
