Chapter 2

Author: Mr. Trouble
The day the Fitzgeralds came over for dinner, I put on a white dress.

Half an hour later, Poppy changed into a white dress, too. And since I wore pearl earrings, she put on pearl earrings too.

When I spoke to the bridal shop associate, Sammy, over the phone, I’d intentionally softened the end of my sentences. As soon as Poppy sat down at the dinner table, she deliberately lowered her voice to sound just as soft, even mimicking the exact angle of my head down to the degree.

The second Diana stepped through the front door, Poppy rushed to speak before I could even open my mouth.

"Diana, welcome!"

Her smile was practically a replica of mine.

Mom watched with sheer delight, her hands trembling so much with excitement that she could barely hold her teacup steady.

"See? Poppy is just so much warmer than Willow, who's naturally reserved. She’s nothing like her younger sister, who actually knows how to take care of people."

Diana glanced at Poppy, who immediately sat up straight, beaming like a student praised by the teacher. She truly believed she was doing everything right.

I didn't say a word, though.

After all, she wasn't trying to flatter the Fitzgeralds. She was studying me, learning how to act like the future Mrs. Fitzgerald.

Before dinner was served, I set my phone down with the screen up, leaving my Notes app open right at the very top.

The title read: [Things to Note for the Fitzgerald Dinner.]

Rule #1: Diana doesn't like strong tea.

Rule #2: Place the welcome gift in the left drawer.

Rule #3: Return the silk scarf. Do not give it as a gift!

Sure enough, Poppy’s eyes darted straight to it. Her eyes darted over the text, terrified of being caught, but too eager to look away.

However, she only managed to memorize the first two rules. When Mom called her over to fetch some fruit, she missed the third one completely.

The moment Diana sat down, Poppy rushed to pour her tea.

"Diana, try this lighter blend. It’s not as bitter."

Diana accepted the tea without saying whether it was good or bad.

Then Poppy immediately went over to the left drawer to grab the gift box, her movements even more practiced and familiar than mine, the actual bride-to-be.

She handed the box over with a bright smile. "Diana, I picked this out specifically for you."

I looked up at her.

It seemed she hadn't seen rule number three.

Diana unboxed the gift to reveal a slate-blue silk scarf. But the second her fingertips brushed against the edge, she felt a snagged thread.

Right on cue, my phone started ringing.

I answered and put it on speakerphone.

Sammy's voice echoed loud and clear throughout the room. "Ms. Willow, today is the absolute last day to return that snagged silk scarf. Please don't forget to bring your receipt!"

The dinner table went silent, and Poppy’s face turned pale.

A relative sitting nearby couldn't help but remark, whispering, "You picked out a damaged return item specifically for her?"

Poppy grew flustered, her eyes rimming with red. "I-I didn't know! My sister left it there!"

I nodded calmly. "Yeah, I did. I even wrote a note saying not to give it."

Her lips quivered, completely at a loss for words.

Mom glared at me. "Why did your phone have to ring right at this exact moment?"

I met her gaze. "Store reminder. Pretty good timing, right?"

Diana put the scarf back into the box and gently pushed it away. "It's fine if you don't know any better. You can take your time to learn the Fitzgerald family rules later."

Poppy only heard the word "later". In an instant, the humiliation on her face was taken over by a wave of excitement.

She was always like this. Give her the smallest flicker of light, and she’d mistake it for a golden staircase handed straight to her.

After dinner, I placed my wedding vows at the very top of my Notes app.

Predictably, Poppy sneaked over to take a look.

She read it to herself in a whisper first. Then, clearing her throat, she deliberately recited it out loud right in front of Diana.

"For better or for worse, I will stand by Elliot and share every burden."

When she finished, she shot me a glance. It was a look that practically screamed, "Whatever you can do, I can do too. If you can marry into this family, so can I."

Diana looked up. "That’s a good line."

Poppy’s eyes gleamed with excitement.

Diana continued, "Keep it in the wedding ceremony."

Poppy couldn't even suppress the corners of her mouth from twitching into a smile. She thought she was just copying me reading a vow.

What she didn't realize was that sharing every burden wasn't a sweet romantic gesture, but a heavy liability.

That night, Elliot sent me a text on iMessage.

[Take another look at the wedding itinerary for tomorrow.]

I didn't reply.

Poppy walked past behind me and caught a glance at my screen.

She quickly copied my exact tone to send him a message.

[Elliot, Willow has been really stressed lately. I can help her go over the itinerary instead.]

Elliot accepted her request almost instantly, even replying: [You’re more attentive than she is.]

Poppy held her phone up right in front of my face, the smugness in her eyes practically impossible to hide.

"Willow, Elliot says I act more like Mrs. Fitzgerald than you do."

I stared at the text on the screen before smiling.

"In that case, make sure you play the part all the way to the end."

The fallout from the Fitzgeralds' massive debt arrived even faster than I had anticipated.Elliot was taken away for questioning, Diana was cornered at the company entrance by creditors, and the once-glamorous lobby of the Fitzgerald Group was plastered with formal demand letters.Poppy received a legal notice as well. With the signed prenuptial agreement, the forged signature, and the identity impersonation, she was required to cooperate with authorities on every single count. She sat in Mike’s office holding the notice, her voice raspy from weeping. "I just wanted to be Mrs. Fitzgerald..."Mike looked at her. "Now you are."Poppy’s sobbing came to a sudden halt. This was likely the first time she realized that a title didn't just bring diamond rings, wedding dresses, and the envy of onlookers. It brought crushing liability, too.Mom ended up selling the house she had originally saved for Poppy. The final closing price was far lower than she had hoped, but because she was despe

  • My Copycat Sister   Chapter 9

Poppy made her move to run at four in the morning. She wore a beige coat that matched mine, carried an identical suitcase, and even tied her scarf the exact way I usually did. Watching her leave through the security camera, I noticed she had even applied the same subtle makeup I normally wore. She truly believed that as long as she looked like me, she could dump her problems on me and walk away. What she didn't realize was that I had already replaced my identification and reported my old copies lost long ago. There weren't many people at the station. The early morning waiting area was bathed in stark, cold white light, with the PA system repeatedly reminding passengers to present valid identification for real-name verification.Poppy pulled her hat brim lower and handed over the ID.The machine beeped, and a bright red light flashed. The station employee checked the screen, then looked up at her. "Please take off your mask."Poppy’s hand trembled visibly. "I have a cold."The e

When the chat history was leaked, Mom was the first one to panic. She called Diana over and over again, but nobody answered. Desperate, she tried explaining things to our relatives, claiming Poppy just felt bad for her older sister and that the Palmers had no intention of taking advantage of the Fitzgeralds.Nobody bought it, though. The Fitzgeralds' creditors moved even faster than our relatives. Mom was in the middle of screaming at me in the living room when the news broke that the family's bank accounts had been frozen."Your sister is already in this state! How much further are you going to push her?!"The words had barely left her mouth when her phone rang. A representative from the bank informed her that two properties under her name were involved in a guarantee dispute and required her cooperation in the investigation.Mom leaned against the sofa for support, the color draining from her face bit by bit.Poppy heard it, too. Her very first reaction wasn't fear, but crying

Mike’s office was located on the twenty-seventh floor in the city center.Through the floor-to-ceiling windows, the sky was overcast and gray. Poppy sat across from me, gripping the statement tightly. Dark circles hung under her eyes from a sleepless night, yet the moment she saw me, she forced her shoulders straight."Willow, now that we're here, you can stop pretending. You signed this statement."She pushed the paper to the center of the desk.On the signature line, the name "Willow Palmer" was written. It really did look remarkably like mine, right down to the upward flick on the final stroke.I took a glance. "Looks pretty convincing."Poppy’s eyes lit up.That was what she had loved hearing most growing up. Looking like me, looking real enough to confuse everyone, looking so convincing that she could take my things with a clear conscience.Mom had come along, too. Sitting to the side, her face looked haggard, but the first words out of her mouth were still the same."Wil

  • My Copycat Sister   Chapter 6

Poppy naturally refused to step outside. She double-locked the door and sat in front of the vanity, her shoulders shaking violently as she wept. Half an hour ago, she was boasting in front of the cameras that she was Mrs. Fitzgerald. Now, those exact three words turned into the heavy pounding of debt collectors on the door.Mom paced back and forth. "Willow, go explain it to them right now! The whole thing was just a big misunderstanding!""A misunderstanding about what?" I asked her. "She wore the wedding dress herself. She read the vows. She signed her own name."Cornered by my words, Mom scowled and turned her attention to comforting Poppy instead.Wiping her tears, Poppy grabbed her phone. "I’m going to show everyone how ruthless you really are!" Within minutes, she drafted a long post and shared it to her Instagram as well as the family group chat. The narrative was crafted fast, claiming that her sister set her up to take her place in the marriage. Apparently, I’d been

  • My Copycat Sister   Chapter 5

The moment the door to the green room swung shut, the applause and chatter from the outside were completely cut off.The blush on Poppy’s face couldn’t hide how pale she looked. Diana pushed a document in front of her, no longer even bothering to fake a polite smile."Sign it."Poppy took a step back. "I was just filling in for my sister to finish the ceremony..."Diana snorted. "Mrs. Fitzgerald, the ceremony isn't over yet."That title of Mrs. Fitzgerald had been a trophy Poppy was so desperate to steal just minutes ago. Now, it read like a death sentence.Poppy turned to Elliot. "Elliot, tell them! Tell them I didn't mean it like that!"Elliot avoided her gaze. "Poppy, the Fitzgeralds need you right now. Just help us get through this hurdle, and I won't treat you wrong."I had heard those exact words before—at the bridal shop, the menu tasting, and every single time he needed me to play along. His gentleness was nothing more than a thin veneer hiding a mountain of debt.Fina
