Chapter 2

Author: Bowl of Rice
I floated there in midair, listening to Matt's words, not knowing whether to laugh or cry.

Should I laugh because at least Matt still hated me? As long as he hated me, he wouldn't forget me.

Or should I cry because I had been dead for so long that I couldn't even remember how I died? I couldn't even let him take his anger out on me anymore.

Shannon curled her lips into a satisfied smile. "Matt, as long as you get over her, whether she's alive or not doesn't matter anymore. Come on. Since you're free, come with me to try on some wedding dresses."

My soul was bound to Matt, and I couldn't leave his side, so I had no choice but to follow them to the bridal shop.

Shannon tried on one expensive custom-made wedding dress after another, each one bringing out her beauty even more. She stood beside Matt with a bright smile, looking like they were made for each other.

All of a sudden, I really hoped Matt had moved on from me. After all, he couldn't spend the rest of his life pining over a dead woman.

But when I looked over, I found him staring at the wedding dress in the mirror, lost in thought. His eyes were blank, as if he were looking at something else through it.

"Matt! Hey, Matt!" Shannon had to call his name twice before he finally snapped out of it.

Matt turned his head and gave her a halfhearted answer. "You look beautiful. The wedding dress looks great on you too."

Shannon pouted in annoyance. "But I was asking if this necklace goes with it!"

Matt paused, then gave her an awkward smile. "Sorry. I was thinking about the merger. Why don't we come back another day? I just remembered that there's a detail in the merger deal that doesn't add up. I need to go back to the office and sort it out. I'll have the driver take you home."

Then, he hurried out without even waiting for Shannon to answer.

Matt went to see Simon Hale again.

Simon was almost beaten to a pulp, his body covered in blood as he curled up in a corner, struggling to breathe.

Matt bent down and nudged him with his foot. "Are you still refusing to talk?"

Simon struggled to open his swollen eyes, his voice barely a whisper. "Mr. Lewinsky, I've already told you. Natalia really is dead. The person who worked with our boss from the inside all those years ago was your fiancée, Shannon. What else do you want me to say?"

Matt kicked Simon hard, barely containing his rage. "I want you to tell me the truth! Stop trying to drive a wedge between Shannon and me. We grew up together. She has no reason to hurt my family. Who told you to say this? Natalia?

"She ran off with the investment money and stole the secret key. She nearly drove the Lewinsky family into bankruptcy and caused my father to die of shock. Is she still refusing to leave me alone, making you tell these lies to deceive me again?"

Simon groaned and then burst into a crazed laughter. He stared straight at Matt. "Mr. Lewinsky, everything I've said is the truth. Do you not believe me, or are you afraid to believe me?"

Matt fell silent.

Simon saw through the pain and struggle in Matt's eyes. Blood and tears trickled from the corners of his eyes as he gave a bitter smile and sighed. "Natalia, what a waste that you died like this…"

Then, he passed out completely.

Honestly, I didn't think it was a waste.

Natalia was the name my leader, Bernard Hale, gave me. Just like Renee Dunn, I was bought by him from some remote mountain village. We were raised and trained for one purpose, and that was to trick wealthy men like Matt into giving up their money and assets.

Simon told me multiple times, "Don't fall for him. If Mr. Hale finds out, you'll die. He won't let you go!"

I didn't listen to him, so ending up like this was simply the price I paid for losing the bet.

At least Matt was still alive.

I got this life by sheer luck in the first place. There was nothing worth regretting.

Matt still took Simon's words to heart. He began distancing himself from Shannon, postponed their wedding, and even had people secretly investigate her.

Shannon couldn't figure out why. It wasn't until she managed to get the truth out of one of the bodyguards that she realized what was going on.

She stormed into Matt's office and threw the folder onto his desk, looking at him with hurt and anger. "Matt, Natalia fooled you again!"

14 days after they found my body, my soul started to fade little by little, like smoke about to be blown away by the wind. I knew I might disappear soon. However, I couldn't bring myself to leave when I saw Matt sitting in the walk-in freezer. His hair seemed even grayer now, and he had become frighteningly thin. He stayed awake night after night, afraid to sleep in case he couldn't dream of me. When he woke up, he was afraid to open his eyes, terrified that I wouldn't be there in the real world either.Matt just sat quietly beside the coffin, tracing the outline of my face over and over through the glass. "Natalia, the house is so quiet. When are you… going to talk to me?"My heart broke at the sight of him. I didn't know why I'd become a spirit or how much longer I would be able to stay around. But I couldn't help wanting to be with him a little longer.I floated over and sat in the chair beside Matt. Even though I knew I couldn't touch him, I still wanted to be as close to him

At Matt's command, Bernard's prison life became a living hell. His hands and legs were deliberately broken and left to heal on their own. Whenever it rained, the pain got so bad he could barely crawl, but the other inmates still beat him up.To stop him from killing himself, the prison had a medical team on standby around the clock.Bernard was completely broken. He would spend the rest of his life barely surviving in that cell.Matt didn't let him die, nor did he let him go insane. He wanted Bernard to stay fully conscious, living every single day in fear and pain.Seven days after my body was found, Matt held a grand funeral for me. But nothing lay beneath the brand-new tombstone. No urn. No personal belongings. My body was still kept in the walk-in freezer at the estate, the only place where he could still touch me.When the butler asked him about it, Matt merely replied, "Someone once told me that if the dead don't have a tombstone, they won't be able to find their way home.

Shannon didn't look the slightest bit panicky when the bodyguards brought her in. She even took the time to straighten her collar.Matt sat on the chair opposite her, his eyes dark and unreadable. "Why? We grew up together. When I brought Natalia to you, you smiled and congratulated us. You even gave her a wedding gift."Shannon quietly stared at him before breaking into a laugh. Her usual sweet, charming smile was gone. Now, it was filled with nothing but malice and jealousy."Matt, you want to know why? Because I couldn't stand it! Why is a liar from some backwater village always on your mind? I spent all these years by your side, and I still couldn't compare to her, who was only with you for a few months! "Why did I have to scheme just to marry you, and she didn't have to do anything but still won you over?"Shannon's voice grew sharper. "I worked so hard to become your wife, but you're still constantly pining over that dead woman!"Matt looked at her, his eyes cold. "Is that

The lights in the forensic lab stayed on all night.Matt sat on a bench in the hallway all night, looking completely lost. He covered his face with both hands, muffled sobs echoing through the empty hall.By the time the sky began to lighten, the door finally opened. The medical examiner stepped out, looking exhausted. He removed his mask and held out a clear evidence bag."Mr. Lewinsky, I believe this is the secret key you reported stolen three years ago."Matt lifted his head abruptly, his bloodshot eyes fixed on the bag.The medical examiner's voice grew heavy, with a hint of pity. "We found it… inside your wife. It had been coated with something to protect it from being broken down by her body, then stitched into her lower abdomen. "The wound was deep, and it had clearly festered and healed several times. Someone had forcibly stitched it inside her."That's why Bernard never found it. Your wife had been hiding it inside her body the whole time."Matt reached out to take th

Inside the bumpy police car, Matt lost control of himself like never before. His body trembled, his fingertips ice-cold. His ears were ringing, and all he could seem to hear was the deafening sound of his own heartbeat.Countless questions flashed through his mind. He wanted to ask me where I'd been all these years, why I'd lied to him, whether he'd treated me badly, whether I was doing okay, and why I hadn't gone back to him. He knew he would've forgiven me for everything if I had just returned to him.Matt rehearsed the words in his head over and over, practicing the expressions and tone he would use.The car finally came to a stop. The villager who called the cops led them up the snowy slope toward a small cabin. Matt stumbled along, desperately trying to keep up with the villager's pace.He couldn't help but ask, "Why would she be living in a place like this?"The villager glanced back at him in confusion, looking like he wanted to say something but couldn't. In the end, he sa

The organization's leader, Bernard, was finally arrested. One of Simon's men tipped off the police and helped them capture him alive.Matt got into the police vehicle and exhaled in relief as the city hall disappeared from view in the rearview mirror. He asked, "What do you need me to do?"The officer beside him replied, "Bernard wants to see you. He said there was something he wanted to discuss with you in private. Since some of his men are still at large, we'd also like him to give us more information. "We appreciate your cooperation, Mr. Lewinsky. We'll have officers monitor the entire conversation and take notes."Matt nodded. The door to the interrogation room was pushed open, and Bernard was inside, wearing a prison uniform, his hands cuffed to the table. He gave Matt a wicked grin. "Mr. Lewinsky, long time no see. I didn't run your company into the ground. It's doing pretty well, isn't it? So why keep coming after me so hard? Can't we just give each other some leeway and
