Chapter 3

Author: Bowl of Rice
The papers inside the folder scattered all over the floor. Matt picked one up. The moment he glanced at it, his eyes widened.

It was a foreign bank statement, and the account holder's name was listed as Natalia Yates. The most recent transaction was dated yesterday, and the location was a luxury casino in Lintor.

"Natalia was still using this account to live it up at a casino overseas as of yesterday! She's always one step ahead. We can't seem to catch her. Don't listen to Simon. Why would I ever harm you?"

Matt gripped the paper, his knuckles turning white as he wrestled with his doubts.

Seeing this, Shannon cried even harder. "Matt, did you forget how your father died? It doesn't matter whether Natalia really betrayed you. She approached you with ulterior motives. She also scammed you out of a ton of money. And she really did steal the secret key, causing your father to have a fatal heart attack.

"Now you're going to let Simon, someone who worked with her, make you doubt me?"

Matt put down the paper, then reached out and pulled Shannon into his arms, lowering his head to kiss her hair. He said, "I'm sorry. I was wrong. I should've known from the start that Natalia was no good, and neither was Simon. I shouldn't have doubted you and treated you so coldly.

"I promise I'll deal with Simon right away. Then, we'll get married, okay?"

Shannon broke into a smile through her tears. She stood on tiptoe and kissed his cheek, nodding hard. "Okay."

When Matt returned to the water prison under the cover of night, Simon knew he was going to die.

Matt raised his gun and asked Simon one last time, "Where exactly is Natalia?"

Simon stared at the gun and gave a bitter smile. He tilted his head back and looked into the empty air, his eyes landing right where I was floating.

For a moment, I almost thought he could see me.

But Simon quickly looked away and murmured, "I don't know where she is either. I miss her too."

The gunshot rang out, making Shannon, who had been waiting outside, flinch.

Simon collapsed into a pool of blood.

Matt just stood there and stared at Simon for a long while before finally walking out, the smell of blood clinging to his clothes. He glanced at Shannon, whose face had gone pale, and patted her head.

"I'm sorry. That must have scared you. I should've said no when you insisted on coming with me. I'll forget about Natalia. Let's just live our lives in peace from now on."

The color slowly returned to Shannon's face. A bright smile suddenly spread across her face, as if she'd finally gotten what she'd been waiting for.

"Matt, I'm so glad you're finally willing to move on from her. Let's go home. We'll go to the city hall first thing tomorrow morning and make it official."

On the way back, Matt instructed Adam to stop looking into my whereabouts. As if he were determined to let me go for good, he also had the housekeepers clear out the room I'd once lived in. My clothes, decorations, and everything that proved I'd once been there were thrown away.

I watched in silence, happy for him, yet I still cried my heart out. My body slowly began to turn transparent.

People often said that a soul lingered because someone couldn't let go of them. If Matt had decided to move on from me, then maybe I was about to truly disappear too.

I was just a little sad.

I hadn't had the chance to tell him that I really was a bad woman. When I fell in love with him, my identity was fake, my family background was fake, and even my name was fake.

But my love for him was genuine. I had given him the only bit of sincerity I had left in this life. Even if it cost me my life, I had no regrets.

…

Early the next morning, Shannon dragged Matt to the city hall. I floated beside them, watching the staff smile as they guided them through the forms and asked for their information to register their marriage.

Shannon excitedly handed over her ID and turned to Matt. "Matt, hurry up and give her your ID. Once she enters our information into the system, we'll officially be husband and wife!"

Matt took a deep breath, as if he'd finally made up his mind. He pulled out his ID and was just about to hand it over when a hand suddenly reached out and grabbed his wrist.

He turned his head and saw two police officers standing behind him.

"Mr. Lewinsky, we need your cooperation on an urgent matter at the police station. Please come with us."

14 days after they found my body, my soul started to fade little by little, like smoke about to be blown away by the wind. I knew I might disappear soon. However, I couldn't bring myself to leave when I saw Matt sitting in the walk-in freezer. His hair seemed even grayer now, and he had become frighteningly thin. He stayed awake night after night, afraid to sleep in case he couldn't dream of me. When he woke up, he was afraid to open his eyes, terrified that I wouldn't be there in the real world either.Matt just sat quietly beside the coffin, tracing the outline of my face over and over through the glass. "Natalia, the house is so quiet. When are you… going to talk to me?"My heart broke at the sight of him. I didn't know why I'd become a spirit or how much longer I would be able to stay around. But I couldn't help wanting to be with him a little longer.I floated over and sat in the chair beside Matt. Even though I knew I couldn't touch him, I still wanted to be as close to him

At Matt's command, Bernard's prison life became a living hell. His hands and legs were deliberately broken and left to heal on their own. Whenever it rained, the pain got so bad he could barely crawl, but the other inmates still beat him up.To stop him from killing himself, the prison had a medical team on standby around the clock.Bernard was completely broken. He would spend the rest of his life barely surviving in that cell.Matt didn't let him die, nor did he let him go insane. He wanted Bernard to stay fully conscious, living every single day in fear and pain.Seven days after my body was found, Matt held a grand funeral for me. But nothing lay beneath the brand-new tombstone. No urn. No personal belongings. My body was still kept in the walk-in freezer at the estate, the only place where he could still touch me.When the butler asked him about it, Matt merely replied, "Someone once told me that if the dead don't have a tombstone, they won't be able to find their way home.

Shannon didn't look the slightest bit panicky when the bodyguards brought her in. She even took the time to straighten her collar.Matt sat on the chair opposite her, his eyes dark and unreadable. "Why? We grew up together. When I brought Natalia to you, you smiled and congratulated us. You even gave her a wedding gift."Shannon quietly stared at him before breaking into a laugh. Her usual sweet, charming smile was gone. Now, it was filled with nothing but malice and jealousy."Matt, you want to know why? Because I couldn't stand it! Why is a liar from some backwater village always on your mind? I spent all these years by your side, and I still couldn't compare to her, who was only with you for a few months! "Why did I have to scheme just to marry you, and she didn't have to do anything but still won you over?"Shannon's voice grew sharper. "I worked so hard to become your wife, but you're still constantly pining over that dead woman!"Matt looked at her, his eyes cold. "Is that

The lights in the forensic lab stayed on all night.Matt sat on a bench in the hallway all night, looking completely lost. He covered his face with both hands, muffled sobs echoing through the empty hall.By the time the sky began to lighten, the door finally opened. The medical examiner stepped out, looking exhausted. He removed his mask and held out a clear evidence bag."Mr. Lewinsky, I believe this is the secret key you reported stolen three years ago."Matt lifted his head abruptly, his bloodshot eyes fixed on the bag.The medical examiner's voice grew heavy, with a hint of pity. "We found it… inside your wife. It had been coated with something to protect it from being broken down by her body, then stitched into her lower abdomen. "The wound was deep, and it had clearly festered and healed several times. Someone had forcibly stitched it inside her."That's why Bernard never found it. Your wife had been hiding it inside her body the whole time."Matt reached out to take th

Inside the bumpy police car, Matt lost control of himself like never before. His body trembled, his fingertips ice-cold. His ears were ringing, and all he could seem to hear was the deafening sound of his own heartbeat.Countless questions flashed through his mind. He wanted to ask me where I'd been all these years, why I'd lied to him, whether he'd treated me badly, whether I was doing okay, and why I hadn't gone back to him. He knew he would've forgiven me for everything if I had just returned to him.Matt rehearsed the words in his head over and over, practicing the expressions and tone he would use.The car finally came to a stop. The villager who called the cops led them up the snowy slope toward a small cabin. Matt stumbled along, desperately trying to keep up with the villager's pace.He couldn't help but ask, "Why would she be living in a place like this?"The villager glanced back at him in confusion, looking like he wanted to say something but couldn't. In the end, he sa

The organization's leader, Bernard, was finally arrested. One of Simon's men tipped off the police and helped them capture him alive.Matt got into the police vehicle and exhaled in relief as the city hall disappeared from view in the rearview mirror. He asked, "What do you need me to do?"The officer beside him replied, "Bernard wants to see you. He said there was something he wanted to discuss with you in private. Since some of his men are still at large, we'd also like him to give us more information. "We appreciate your cooperation, Mr. Lewinsky. We'll have officers monitor the entire conversation and take notes."Matt nodded. The door to the interrogation room was pushed open, and Bernard was inside, wearing a prison uniform, his hands cuffed to the table. He gave Matt a wicked grin. "Mr. Lewinsky, long time no see. I didn't run your company into the ground. It's doing pretty well, isn't it? So why keep coming after me so hard? Can't we just give each other some leeway and
