Chapter 3

Author: Emoe
I was the sole heir to the Ritchie family.

Ever since I was little, I'd known exactly how heavy the responsibilities on my shoulders were. So I decided to pretend I was selectively blind and simply ignore that lunatic woman.

At eight that evening, Karen sent me a location pin. It was some roadside food stall next to a cheap motel.

Another message followed immediately after: [Emergency. Come now!]

The sight of it irritated me so much that I locked my phone screen. I couldn't even work up the mood to keep playing my game.

Then suddenly, my phone rang shrilly.

Seeing Karen's name on the caller ID instantly put me in a foul mood, and I hung up without hesitation.

She called more than ten times after that.

I ignored every single one.

A new message popped up: [Jennifer, what's your problem? Why aren't you replying or answering your phone?!]

I hesitated for a few seconds before finally typing back with mixed emotions.

Jennifer: [If it's about work, we can discuss it during office hours. As for personal matters, there's nothing to discuss.]

The other side immediately exploded in anger. Even through the screen, her crazed fury practically spilled out.

Karen: [I already told you during the day—my brother traveled all the way from our hometown just for you!]

Karen: [He prepared dinner for the two of you and even booked a room so you could get to know each other better, yet you actually stood him up?]

Karen: [He's being a gentleman by not holding it against you this time. Add him right now and make it up to him yourself!]

The next second, a friend request popped up from a stranger with a handsome profile picture and the username "Hard Work Pays Off."

Without even half a second of hesitation, I rejected it immediately.

Then I blocked Karen as well.

The entire world instantly became peaceful.

I'd probably wasted too much energy dealing with that lunatic during the day.

After eating the dinner my mom made, I fell asleep almost immediately.

I had nightmares the entire night, every single one filled with Karen's disgusting face.

Because I slept so poorly, I woke up late the next morning.

Afraid of being late for work, I hastily stuffed a few bites of food into my mouth before rushing out the door and driving to the company.

I had just parked my car when I turned around and saw a scruffy man with yellow teeth staring at me while drooling.

Suppressing my discomfort, I spoke politely.

"Sir, I don't have any empty bottles. Please check somewhere else."

I was about to leave when the man suddenly spread his arms and blocked my path. His greedy eyes roamed shamelessly over my body as he repeatedly swallowed his saliva.

"Karen really wasn't lying. You're way prettier than your photos. That figure, that pretty little face... damn, you're gorgeous.

"Don't worry. I'll divorce her right away, and then we'll go get our marriage certificate. You don't even need to give me much of a wedding gift. A hundred thousand dollars is enough."

I stared at him in shock, so stunned I could barely speak.

"Y-You're Karen's brother?"

It wasn't just that he looked nothing like the handsome profile picture. They were practically two completely unrelated people.

The man grinned at me broadly.

"Yep! I'm your husband. Come on, come home with me."

As he spoke, he reached out to put an arm around my shoulders.

Terrified, I instinctively shoved him away.

The man froze for a second before the veins on his forehead bulged, and his features twisted viciously as he advanced toward me.

"You bitch, you wanna die?! You should be damn grateful a man like me even wants you, and you still dare push me? Today, I'm gonna beat you into obedience!"

Not only was he unreasonable, he was clearly violent too.

I'd never encountered such a shameless thug before in my life. In that moment, it felt like the sky was collapsing over my head. I was so frightened I nearly burst into tears.

Fortunately, two security guards nearby rushed over to stop him, giving me the chance to escape into the elevator.

Still shaken, I walked into the office. The moment I saw Karen's infuriating face, my anger reignited instantly.

Just as I was about to demand what kind of sick game she was playing, Samantha Jenkins walked over, smiling, and shoved a cardboard box into my arms.

"Jennifer, you really fooled us good. Your family's obviously so rich, yet you acted so low-key the whole time. We were all completely deceived by you."

I froze on the spot.

It felt as though my heart had skipped a beat.

"From this moment on, he will be transferred to a psychiatric hospital for treatment," Dr. Sherman said flatly. "Until he is fully recovered."Before Eli could react, several men restrained him and forcibly dragged him away.He struggled wildly, roaring in fury."Jennifer! You bitch! Just wait until I get out—I'll be the first to kill you!"Unfortunately for him, he would never get out again.Seeing Eli brought to such a miserable end, Karen was utterly terrified. She dropped to her knees in front of me with a thud and began slapping herself hard across the face."Ms. Ritchie… I'm a monster. I was wrong to ever have bad intentions toward you!"Still feeling it wasn't enough, she slammed her head against the floor several times in succession.Blood trickled down her face, leaving her a pitiful, disheveled mess.I spoke up."Enough. Stop with the useless theatrics. As for my demands, Harvey has already made them very clear. So, your decision—are you signing, or...""I'll sign

The air suddenly felt hot and stuffy. Feeling awkward, I quickly turned my head away."Stop fooling around. In another two months, your family's assessment will begin too. You should worry about yourself and pray you pass."Leaning back against the seat, I stared out the window."No rush. Look at this first.""What is it?"I took the document from him and realized it was the termination notice from the company.I shot to my feet in shock, my voice rising excitedly."You actually...""I got it back from HR. I told you. I can handle any trouble for you."Ronny looked unbearably smug, almost childish, as if silently saying, 'Hurry up and praise me.'According to the rules, those undergoing the family assessment weren't allowed to use any shortcuts or outside influence to cheat. But Ronny counted as external support, so technically it wasn't against the rules."Thank you so much."Overcome with happiness, I threw my arms around him and planted a deep kiss on his cheek. He froz

Anyone with half a brain could tell at a glance which man a woman would choose."So... that's the 'younger brother' Karen kept talking about?""No, wait. That should be her husband.""She even showed me pictures before. The guy in the photos was ridiculously handsome. Turns out every single one was fake!""That couple is absolutely disgusting! Working together to deceive an innocent young woman like this. They're trying to ruin her entire life!""People like them belong in prison forever. They should never be let out to hurt anyone else again."At that moment, Ronny sent me a file.I skimmed through it quickly and couldn't help sucking in a sharp breath.I'd thought running into those two lunatics was already the worst luck imaginable.Who would've guessed that it was only the tip of the iceberg?I picked up my phone solemnly and walked toward the police officers."Officer, I have additional evidence to submit."…After arriving at the police station and finishing my state

The shouting and insults grew louder and louder, but I found the whole thing unbearably meaningless.Just then, several police officers arrived.Ronny had called the police on his way over.Soon after, they found all of my missing belongings inside Karen's bag.Realizing she was about to be taken away, Karen suddenly lifted her head. The fear in her eyes vanished, replaced once again by vicious determination."Officers, I'm innocent! They framed me! Jennifer told me to hold onto those things for her. I didn't steal anything!"As for the marriage matter, she was the one who got on her knees begging me. She said she couldn't live without my husband and begged me to divorce him so she could marry him instead."To hide her disgusting intentions, she promised me a huge amount of hush money and asked me to pretend in front of everyone that the man she was marrying was my younger brother."From beginning to end, I was simply too kind and trusted her lies. End things peacefully if you want to break up. Why resort to violence?"These coworkers, completely ignorant of the truth, had chosen to believe Karen's one-sided story without question. In their eyes, I was already nailed to the pillar of shame—the unforgivable one at fault. It was honestly so absurd I almost wanted to laugh.Meanwhile, Ronny stood beside me, looking thoroughly entertained, as though he were watching a drama unfold. If he weren't worried about my feelings, he probably would've burst out laughing already.I stared coldly at everyone present, my expression deadly serious."What makes all of you so certain that I'm her future sister-in-law?
