Chapter 4

Penulis: Emoe
They knew I was the Ritchie family's heiress?

Bryan Kenwood hurried over, his face plastered with a fawning smile.

"Karen's brother is such a great catch. You're so lucky. Honestly, why would you wanna keep working like a corporate slave?"

Karen?

My chest tightened painfully, but then I glanced down and realized the cardboard box was filled with my office belongings.

"What is the meaning of this?!"

Karen strutted over with a smug expression.

"What else could it mean? You're fired."

It felt like a bolt of lightning had struck me. My temples throbbed violently with rage.

Karen crossed her arms proudly, looking unbearably self-satisfied.

"Well? Aren't you happy?"

Happy?

Oh, absolutely. So happy I wanted to bite someone.

Samantha smiled as she tried to talk some sense into me.

"We already heard all about you and your husband from Karen. What married couple doesn't argue every now and then?

"Your husband treats you so well. So what if he just forgot your anniversary? Guys who are out there making big moves don't sweat the small stuff like that. You need to be more understanding and stop being so difficult."

I laughed from sheer anger. At this point, I didn't even care how many different ridiculous versions of the story that lunatic had spread around.

But if I really got fired, I'd fail my family's assessment.

After enduring all this for so long, I was only days away from finally earning the recognition of every elder in the family. And now, it was all about to be ruined by a piece of trash like her.

My body trembled with fury as I shouted at Karen.

"What exactly did I do wrong for the company to fire me? And you—what gives you the right to spread disgusting rumors about me?"

Karen shot me a disdainful glare, her face full of contempt.

"You abandoned your seriously ill, bedridden in-laws and used the money meant for their medicine to splurge on yourself. You dress yourself up every day, trying to dump the husband who's done so much for you. What company would dare keep an employee like you?"

I had no idea what method Karen used to convince everyone to believe such an absurd lie. But she'd relied on deception and manipulation to act like a tyrant here. And I absolutely would not tolerate it.

I was just about to call the police when I suddenly realized my limited-edition handbag was completely empty.

Everything else aside, the priceless gold badge was gone. That badge symbolized the Ritchie family's chosen heir.

"Karen, did you do this?"

She had crossed my absolute bottom line, and I completely lost control.

Karen flinched at my expression, the smile on her face turning stiff.

"So what if I did? That little gold badge is basically a treasured heirloom of the Kosner family. I couldn't let you waste it away.

"Oh, and I already returned your crappy bike using the receipt. I'm holding onto the money, your ID card, and your bank cards for you.

"From now on, every cent you spend has to be reported to me first. You can only use money if I approve it."

The coworkers exchanged uneasy looks, their expressions complicated. Even they seemed to think she'd gone too far.

But Karen didn't care in the slightest. That triumphant smile remained plastered across her face.

"It's not that I'm too strict. Jennifer simply doesn't understand financial management.

"She spent two hundred thousand dollars on a bicycle, hogs the Kosner family house all for herself, and left my seriously ill, bedridden parents living back in our hometown in a leaking shack.

"She even used their life-saving medical money to buy some useless little gold badge, insists on wearing designer brands, and buys expensive jewelry.

"She only earns five thousand a month. If she keeps spending like this, won't my brother end up drowning in debt and jumping off a building someday?

"Everything I'm doing is for her own good."

The coworkers around us immediately started chiming in again, trying to persuade me.

No matter how I explained things, I'd still be wrong. So in the end, I chose silence.

Strangely, once my anger reached its limit, I became completely calm instead.

I took out my phone and quickly sent a message.

Three minutes later, the office doors were suddenly kicked open with a loud bang.

"From this moment on, he will be transferred to a psychiatric hospital for treatment," Dr. Sherman said flatly. "Until he is fully recovered."Before Eli could react, several men restrained him and forcibly dragged him away.He struggled wildly, roaring in fury."Jennifer! You bitch! Just wait until I get out—I'll be the first to kill you!"Unfortunately for him, he would never get out again.Seeing Eli brought to such a miserable end, Karen was utterly terrified. She dropped to her knees in front of me with a thud and began slapping herself hard across the face."Ms. Ritchie… I'm a monster. I was wrong to ever have bad intentions toward you!"Still feeling it wasn't enough, she slammed her head against the floor several times in succession.Blood trickled down her face, leaving her a pitiful, disheveled mess.I spoke up."Enough. Stop with the useless theatrics. As for my demands, Harvey has already made them very clear. So, your decision—are you signing, or...""I'll sign

The air suddenly felt hot and stuffy. Feeling awkward, I quickly turned my head away."Stop fooling around. In another two months, your family's assessment will begin too. You should worry about yourself and pray you pass."Leaning back against the seat, I stared out the window."No rush. Look at this first.""What is it?"I took the document from him and realized it was the termination notice from the company.I shot to my feet in shock, my voice rising excitedly."You actually...""I got it back from HR. I told you. I can handle any trouble for you."Ronny looked unbearably smug, almost childish, as if silently saying, 'Hurry up and praise me.'According to the rules, those undergoing the family assessment weren't allowed to use any shortcuts or outside influence to cheat. But Ronny counted as external support, so technically it wasn't against the rules."Thank you so much."Overcome with happiness, I threw my arms around him and planted a deep kiss on his cheek. He froz

Anyone with half a brain could tell at a glance which man a woman would choose."So... that's the 'younger brother' Karen kept talking about?""No, wait. That should be her husband.""She even showed me pictures before. The guy in the photos was ridiculously handsome. Turns out every single one was fake!""That couple is absolutely disgusting! Working together to deceive an innocent young woman like this. They're trying to ruin her entire life!""People like them belong in prison forever. They should never be let out to hurt anyone else again."At that moment, Ronny sent me a file.I skimmed through it quickly and couldn't help sucking in a sharp breath.I'd thought running into those two lunatics was already the worst luck imaginable.Who would've guessed that it was only the tip of the iceberg?I picked up my phone solemnly and walked toward the police officers."Officer, I have additional evidence to submit."…After arriving at the police station and finishing my state

The shouting and insults grew louder and louder, but I found the whole thing unbearably meaningless.Just then, several police officers arrived.Ronny had called the police on his way over.Soon after, they found all of my missing belongings inside Karen's bag.Realizing she was about to be taken away, Karen suddenly lifted her head. The fear in her eyes vanished, replaced once again by vicious determination."Officers, I'm innocent! They framed me! Jennifer told me to hold onto those things for her. I didn't steal anything!"As for the marriage matter, she was the one who got on her knees begging me. She said she couldn't live without my husband and begged me to divorce him so she could marry him instead."To hide her disgusting intentions, she promised me a huge amount of hush money and asked me to pretend in front of everyone that the man she was marrying was my younger brother."From beginning to end, I was simply too kind and trusted her lies. I pitied her and wanted to gi

"You're so wild at heart, and you can't even behave like a decent human being!"At the very least, return their money, compensate them for emotional distress, and apologize properly. End things peacefully if you want to break up. Why resort to violence?"These coworkers, completely ignorant of the truth, had chosen to believe Karen's one-sided story without question. In their eyes, I was already nailed to the pillar of shame—the unforgivable one at fault. It was honestly so absurd I almost wanted to laugh.Meanwhile, Ronny stood beside me, looking thoroughly entertained, as though he were watching a drama unfold. If he weren't worried about my feelings, he probably would've burst out laughing already.I stared coldly at everyone present, my expression deadly serious."What makes all of you so certain that I'm her future sister-in-law? And what makes you think the money I spend belongs to her family?"Seeing me refuse to admit it, Bryan grew even angrier."Jennifer, stop preten

He was the notorious hell-raiser of our social circle, as well as my childhood friend and arranged fiancé.Everyone was thrown off by the scene he was causing and exchanged confused looks. But Karen reacted the fastest. Her face immediately twisted with righteous fury as she started hurling accusations."So it's true, Jennifer! You're cheating right under my nose!
