Chapter 2

Penulis: Emoe
"You're basically forcing my brother to take out money from loan sharks!" Karen spat.

My blood boiled. I tried again and again to hold myself back, but by the end, I was shaking with rage.

"My money is mine. I can spend it however I want, and nobody gets to stop me. Forget spending two thousand dollars on a bike—even if I tore it apart and sold the pieces as scrap for fun, you'd still have no right to interfere!"

Seeing that I was genuinely angry, and with the other coworkers whispering, pointing, and laughing under their breath, Karen's expression turned ugly.

Unable to save face, she just sat back down at her desk with a dark look on her face.

I swore to myself that from then on, I'd stay as far away from her as possible. If I couldn't afford to fight her, I could at least avoid her.

I thought the matter would end there.

But while I was in the bathroom, she actually followed me inside.

Bang.

The door slammed shut behind her.

The sound startled me so badly that I jerked upright, hastily pulling down my skirt.

"What exactly do you want now?"

My chest rose and fell violently with anger. Looking at her felt like staring at some kind of monster.

Karen let out a heavy sigh. Her eyes swept over me from head to toe, her frown getting deeper the longer she looked. Then she started wiping at tears that weren't even there.

"Jennifer, earlier, in front of all those coworkers, I only spared your feelings because I didn't want to embarrass you. After all, family drama shouldn't be aired in public. You really do have a lot of problems, but that's still our family's private business."

She looked at the designer brands and jewelry I was wearing and frowned even harder.

"You waste way too much money on all this. I'll help you sell it and turn it into cash."

As she spoke, she actually reached for the thick gold bracelet on my wrist.

My heart lurched. I reacted instantly and dodged to the side.

Thinking I was just too embarrassed to argue back, she kept lecturing me in the tone of someone older and wiser.

"You're still young. You don't understand that running a household means budgeting carefully, or how expensive everyday necessities really are."

"If you keep living so extravagantly, won't the whole family end up starving with you? My brother nearly worked himself to death earning that hard money. Wasn't it all to give the family a better life?

"You're his future wife. You should care about him and learn to save money. Otherwise, no matter how much wealth our family has, you'll spend every last cent of it."

My face instantly turned pale with shock.

The emotions I had barely calmed down surged right back up.

My stomach churned violently while the fire in my chest burned hotter and hotter.

I finally snapped. My eyes reddened as I unloaded on her without holding back.

"Are you seriously sick in the head? All you ever talk about is your brother. What, is he made of gold? Is he really that great? What the hell does he have to do with me?

"What kind of poor girl would have to be blind and cursed for generations before deciding to marry into your family? I don't even know your brother, so why are you forcing this fantasy onto me?"

I honestly thought that even if Karen had problems with her brain, at least her hearing still worked.

I'd already made myself crystal clear. Anyone with even a shred of dignity should have stopped pestering me by now.

But I had still underestimated just how insane she was.

Her expression shifted slightly before quickly returning to normal.

"What's there to be scared of if you haven't met yet? He already saw your photo and is on his way here from our hometown. He's handsome, polite, and such a gentleman. Once you meet him, you'll definitely fall for him. This is fate between the two of you. If you miss this chance, you'll regret it for the rest of your life."

Looking at her disgusting smile, I fought hard to suppress the urge to hit her.

I quickly walked around her, terrified her insanity might actually be contagious.

The moment I opened the door, I hurried out at nearly a run.

Perfect timing—the workday had just ended.

I grabbed my bag, rushed out of the company, and sped all the way home.

Up until now, I'd been completely confident about passing my family's trial. But after running into that lunatic Karen, I started doubting whether my patience could really last.

There were still two weeks left. I couldn't imagine how unbearable every remaining day was going to be.

Seeing the dark look on my face, my dad chuckled teasingly.

"What's wrong? Can't handle it anymore?"

I had a stomach full of grievances and frustration, but in the end, I still kept it all to myself.

"From this moment on, he will be transferred to a psychiatric hospital for treatment," Dr. Sherman said flatly. "Until he is fully recovered."Before Eli could react, several men restrained him and forcibly dragged him away.He struggled wildly, roaring in fury."Jennifer! You bitch! The air suddenly felt hot and stuffy. Feeling awkward, I quickly turned my head away."Stop fooling around. In another two months, your family's assessment will begin too. You should worry about yourself and pray you pass."Leaning back against the seat, I stared out the window."No rush. Look at this first.""What is it?"I took the document from him and realized it was the termination notice from the company.I shot to my feet in shock, my voice rising excitedly."You actually...""I got it back from HR. I told you. I can handle any trouble for you."Ronny looked unbearably smug, almost childish, as if silently saying, 'Hurry up and praise me.'According to the rules, those undergoing the family assessment weren't allowed to use any shortcuts or outside influence to cheat. But Ronny counted as external support, so technically it wasn't against the rules."Thank you so much."Overcome with happiness, I threw my arms around him and planted a deep kiss on his cheek. He froz

Anyone with half a brain could tell at a glance which man a woman would choose."So... that's the 'younger brother' Karen kept talking about?""No, wait. That should be her husband.""She even showed me pictures before. The guy in the photos was ridiculously handsome. Turns out every single one was fake!""That couple is absolutely disgusting! Working together to deceive an innocent young woman like this. They're trying to ruin her entire life!""People like them belong in prison forever. They should never be let out to hurt anyone else again."At that moment, Ronny sent me a file.I skimmed through it quickly and couldn't help sucking in a sharp breath.I'd thought running into those two lunatics was already the worst luck imaginable.Who would've guessed that it was only the tip of the iceberg?I picked up my phone solemnly and walked toward the police officers."Officer, I have additional evidence to submit."…After arriving at the police station and finishing my state

The shouting and insults grew louder and louder, but I found the whole thing unbearably meaningless.Just then, several police officers arrived.Ronny had called the police on his way over.Soon after, they found all of my missing belongings inside Karen's bag.Realizing she was about to be taken away, Karen suddenly lifted her head. The fear in her eyes vanished, replaced once again by vicious determination."Officers, I'm innocent! They framed me! Jennifer told me to hold onto those things for her. I didn't steal anything!"As for the marriage matter, she was the one who got on her knees begging me. She said she couldn't live without my husband and begged me to divorce him so she could marry him instead."To hide her disgusting intentions, she promised me a huge amount of hush money and asked me to pretend in front of everyone that the man she was marrying was my younger brother."From beginning to end, I was simply too kind and trusted her lies. "You're so wild at heart, and you can't even behave like a decent human being!"At the very least, return their money, compensate them for emotional distress, and apologize properly. End things peacefully if you want to break up. Why resort to violence?"These coworkers, completely ignorant of the truth, had chosen to believe Karen's one-sided story without question. In their eyes, I was already nailed to the pillar of shame—the unforgivable one at fault. It was honestly so absurd I almost wanted to laugh.Meanwhile, Ronny stood beside me, looking thoroughly entertained, as though he were watching a drama unfold. If he weren't worried about my feelings, he probably would've burst out laughing already.I stared coldly at everyone present, my expression deadly serious."What makes all of you so certain that I'm her future sister-in-law? And what makes you think the money I spend belongs to her family?"Seeing me refuse to admit it, Bryan grew even angrier."Jennifer, stop preten
