When I'm on the verge of dying, the kidnapper who has kidnapped me calls my fiance, Connor Weston, who's also the youngest patrol officer in the pack. The call goes through, only for us to hear Connor's voice, which is filled with suppressed rage. "Sylvia Kline, I'll give you three seconds to stop bothering me. Vivian's initiation ceremony will take place at night three days later. If you dare pull off another one of your tricks again—" "Connor…" Blood gushes out of my mouth as soon as I open it. My voice is so hoarse that I don't sound like myself at all. "Save… me…" "Your acting's pretty good," Connor cuts me off, his tone filled with disdain. "Listen, if you dare skip out on the ceremony and embarrass me in front of the entire pack, you can forget about going home." After that, the line goes dead. In the end, I die from mutilation. It's fine, Connor. I can't go home for real this time.

Chapter 1

After I died, my soul didn't disperse. It drifted in a daze for a while, and when I regained awareness, I found myself floating in the morgue.

Connor, dressed in the black uniform of the patrol team, stood beside a body covered with a white sheet. At first, I thought they had found me. But when Connor lifted the sheet, a wolf's body lay underneath.

After Connor and the medical examiner completed a thorough examination of the body, they immediately notified the deceased's family.

Soon, a she-wolf arrived at the police station in tears, leading a small pup. She threw herself over the body, weeping bitterly.

Connor gently comforted her, urging her to take care in her grief.

Chris Hall walked over then. He was a close friend that Connor and I had grown up with, as well as a member of the patrol team.

He handed the she-wolf a bag containing items retrieved from the deceased's body. "Keep these safe. There was a necklace in his pocket. It must have been meant for you."

The she-wolf took the items and said, "Today is our mating anniversary. He was on his way to buy me a gift when the accident happened."

Mating anniversary, huh? My gaze drifted toward Connor. Ever since the incident happened, he hadn't celebrated our mating anniversary again.

After seeing off the she-wolf, Connor's expression turned complicated.

"They were mates, after all. His sudden death must be a huge blow to her and the pup. I hope she can get through this."

Hearing his words, I almost broke into tears. Connor, what about me, your fiancee? How would you feel upon hearing news of my death?

Chris seemed to think of me as well. He frowned and asked, "By the way, has Sylvia contacted you? I haven't been able to reach her these past couple of days."

Connor immediately grew annoyed. "Don't bother yourself with her. She's probably just hiding to get my attention. It's the same old trick."

"How can you say that?" Chris shot back. "It's not safe around here lately. Have you gone home to check? Has Sylvia been back?"

"I'm busy with Vivian's initiation ceremony. I don't have time to worry about Sylvia." Connor shrugged him off and loosened his collar irritably. "Chris, I have other work to do. Don't bother me with Sylvia's little games. I don't even want to mention her name again."

"This isn't a game!" Chris growled. "Sylvia would never disappear without a reason. Have you even tried calling her?"

Connor took off his uniform. "I've been really busy lately. There are still a lot of details to finalize for Vivian's ceremony. She's all alone in this, and it's too much for her to handle. I need to be there to help."

Chris was about to argue further, but Connor's phone rang.

He immediately stepped aside to answer it, his voice softening in a way I had never heard before. "Hey, Vivian. What's up? You want to try that new place on Central Street? Wait for me. I'll come pick you up."

He ended the call and waved at Chris, no longer concerned about me. "I'll leave this to you. Something's come up, so I'll be going now."

He turned and walked away without hesitation. It was as though I were some fleeting stranger, and not the childhood friend he'd grown up with, nor the she-wolf who was to be his wife.
