LOGINEzra's Pov
I made sure to avoid Jake and Lisa the rest of the afternoon because I knew they'd both kill me — Jake, for kissing him without asking and Lisa, for actually doing the dare. I raked my hand through my tousled hair for the fourth time that day and sighed. My legs are cramped and it's been an hour since I'd hidden in the girl's locker room. Luckily no one has come in here since Lunch break. My phone buzzed in my pocket and I gasped. I thought I'd put it on silent. I grabbed it and answered without looking at the Caller ID. “Hello,” I said in a whisper. “Ezra?” It was mom. The tensions bunching my muscles rolled away and I sighed in relief. “Thank heavens it's you, mom,” I climbed off the toilet seat and stood on the tiled floor. “What's up?” “Um… are you alone right now?” She asked quietly. “I’m always alone, mom.” I didn't need to lie about that one. “Good because I have some news. Good and bad.” She said, Oh no. The last time she said that our dog got hit by a truck and there was no good news. I wiped underneath my eyes. “Mom…” “I’m so sorry, sweetie,” she began. “The bad news is we got kicked out of our house.” “What?!” I panicked.“ But the good news is : I found us a place to stay,” I could almost hear the smile in her voice now. “Do you remember Fatty Benson?” Of course, I'd remember him. Fatty Benson was my childhood friend before we moved from our old neighborhood. He was this fat kid that everyone loved to pick on. He'd always wear these thick glasses and carry a Harry Potter magic wand. The kids in our class would laugh at him but as his best friend, I'd always stood up for him. Give Fatty Benson a cheeseburger and he'll be loyal to you. I laughed at the memory. “Yeah. I remember him. “Great. His father offered to let us stay in their mansion till we find a place to stay. Isn't that awesome?” Mom said. My brows are knitted. “I don't know if it is.” “But why?” “I mean… we haven't seen them in 7 years.” I shrugged. “Sweetie, trust me. Conrad is a good friend of mine. He helped me get our things out of the house. I know Fatty Benson will be good to you too. He was your best friend." She said. “Yeah, he was.” I smiled. “I'll text you their address. See you soon.” “See ya.” The dialtone clicked and I sighed. “See you soon, Fatty Benson.” **** Navigating my way to Upper East New York was one of the best experiences I've ever had in my life. I saw lots of intimidating skyscrapers, flashy sportcars, and apartments that probably cost millions. So this is where Fatty Benson lives now. He must be enjoying life as it is. I got out of the taxi cab and paid the driver. Then I slung my backpack behind me and stared at the massive building in front of me. The marble building stood tall like a deity, stretching towards a vast acre of land that consisted of gardens and other architectural designs. The Benson mansion was better suited as a palace than an ordinary home. I reached for the gates and wiped my sweaty palm on my skirt. I wouldn't want to rub off my poverty on this one. Before my fingers would ring the intercom, a voice cut through the speaker. “Visitor or family?” The deep voice asked. Shit. I didn't ask mom that. Oh, crud, what do I even say? I hesitated for a moment before I finally replied. “F - Family.” “Name, please.” He asked. “Ezra… Ezra Heart.” I said. “Eggwash?” I froze. Wait, a second. How does this person know my nickname? No one else apart from my schoolmates knows that name or have I gone viral? “S - sir, how do you know that —” The gates let out a low buzz before they parted slowly and a gentleman walked towards it. I dragged my eyes from his designer Jordans to his face and when our eyes met, all the air whooshed out of my lungs. With thick brown hair, bronze skin, and a roguish grin that'll make even the oldest woman in the world swoon, the guy before me exuded power but unlike his voice, his face was very recognizable. My heart sank in shock. You have got to be kidding me. “What the fuck are you doing in my house, Eggwash?!” Jake snapped. If looks could kill, no one would survive the one he’s giving me right now. I nearly scoffed. Was this some kind of joke?“I could ask you the same, ” I crossed my arms over my chest. “What are you doing here?” “Are you blind? I live here.” He snorted. “Oh really?” I brought out the address mom gave me and showed him. “Because that's the address of my childhood best friend and this house is exactly what my mom described.” “Then perhaps your mom made a mistake so get your ass out of my property.” He hissed. .“Hey! This is the right address! What have you done with Fatty Benson!” I yelled. It was his turn to freeze. His eyes are as wide as saucers. “What did you just say?” Mom's voice cut me off before I retorted a reply. “Ezra!” “Mom?” I gasped. “What are you doing here?” She came up beside Jake and hugged his arm. “This is Jake, Conrad's son.” My stomach plummeted. “Wait. What?” Mom smiled. “Yeah. He does look different than he did 7 years ago, doesn't he?” Mom left him and hooked her arms around mine. “I suppose I'll reintroduce both of you since it's been so long since you met. Jake, meet my daughter, Ezra or Minnie Mouse as you'd call her and Ezra meet…” “Fatty Benson.” I completed it for her. Holy shit. The first gunshot cracked through the night like thunder. My body reacted before my mind did. The silver light inside me surged outward, sharp and fast, and the bullet shattered midair, falling in burning fragments at my feet. Gasps tore through the clearing. The armed figures hesitated, shock rippling through their line. Then everything exploded.Wolves shifted in flashes of bone and fur. The sound was violent, wet, powerful. My pack surged forward in a wave of snapping teeth and flying bodies. The humans fired wildly, panic breaking their formation. One wolf leapt so high it seemed impossible, slamming into a man’s chest and carrying him into the dirt with a bone crushing impact.Ivan moved before I even realized I was in danger. He yanked me back just as another shot rang out. The bullet sliced through the space where my head had been a second earlier. My heart slammed brutally against my ribs.“They are not just hunters,” he said fast. “They are trained for wolves.”Another blast.
Ezra povThe forest was alive in a way I had never noticed before. Every leaf, every shadow, every rustle of wind felt like it was speaking directly to me. My senses were heightened, every sound sharper, every smell richer, every movement amplified. Ivan walked beside me, calm and steady, guiding me through the thick underbrush, but I barely noticed him. All my attention was on the pull—the undeniable, magnetic pull that tugged at my soul. My pack. My blood. My family. We emerged into a clearing, and my chest tightened. There were wolves—dozens of them—circling in a wide formation. Not just ordinary wolves. Humans with the aura of power radiating from them, eyes glinting with recognition, with loyalty, with something primal that made my skin tingle and my heart race. One stepped forward, taller than the rest, broad-shouldered, with silver hair catching the last light of the setting sun. His eyes were like molten gold, fierce, commanding, and familiar in a way that made my breath hitch
Ezra pov I gasped, stumbling back as the light surged through me. My limbs felt like molten metal, heavy and sharp all at once, yet strangely alive. The sensation made my skin tingle and my teeth ache. It was as if my entire body remembered something it had long forgotten. Something primal and urgent, a rhythm I had never known but that pulsed in my veins like the heartbeat of the world itself.Ivan’s hands stayed firmly on my arms, grounding me, holding me to the earth while my senses spiraled out of control. “Breathe,” he commanded, voice low but filled with iron. “I’m right here. Don’t fight it. Let it flow. Let it show you who you are.”I tried. I clenched my jaw and forced my breath steady, but the world around me warped. Trees stretched taller than they should, the wind sounded like whispers in a language I didn’t understand, and my heart beat louder than my ears could tolerate. My body shook violently, and I could feel something deep in my core stir—something that made me ache
Ezra’s POV. The moment Ivan walked out of the clinic, the room felt too quiet. Too heavy. Almost as if the walls themselves held their breath and waited for something to explode. I sank back onto the pillow, clutching the ends of the blanket like it could hold me together when everything inside me felt like it was slipping apart.I hated how shaken I was. I hated how Ivan’s voice replayed in my mind with all its fear and heat and frustration. I hated how my body reacted whenever he entered the room, as if every part of me recognized him before my thoughts even tried. Most of all, I hated that I understood that fear. Because something inside me was waking up. Something old. Something vast. Something that stretched beneath my skin like it was trying to break free. The door creaked and my chest tightened. I expected Ivan, because of course I would. Instead it was my mother, slipping inside and closing the door quietly behind her.“Ezra” she whispered, voice already trembling. “Are you h
IVAN POV The forest was thick, shadows folding over us like a living blanket. Ezra stayed close, her hand gripping mine with a pressure that said she was still frightened, still unsure if I’d really keep her safe. I welcomed it. Her trust was fragile, but it was something I could hold on to,something I could protect. We moved quickly, the moonlight barely enough to illuminate the path. Every step was calculated. Every snap of a twig, every rustle of leaves, made my senses scream alert. My wolf prowled beneath my skin, urging me forward, coiling and flexing with the anticipation of blood, danger, and the responsibility of keeping Ezra alive. I didn’t have the luxury of fear; my fear belonged to her.“Where are we going?” Ezra asked softly, her voice nearly swallowed by the night.“To somewhere safe,” I said. Short, sharp. I didn’t elaborate. She didn’t need to know yet. Knowledge could weigh her down, make her hesitate—and hesitation meant vulnerability. She didn’t push, but I felt th
IVAN POV The night wind cut against my skin as I held Ezra tighter, the tremor in her shoulders vibrating straight into my bones. For a moment I didn’t move. I just kept her pressed against me like she was the only thing anchoring me to the earth. Her breath hitched, warm against my neck, and something inside me twisted hard enough to bruise.I didn’t know how long we stayed like that. Minutes. Hours. Time didn’t mean anything when she was in my arms. But something else did.Movement.A shift in the air.A scent that didn’t belong to either of us.Danger.I lifted my head sharply, scanning the treeline behind the abandoned theatre. “Ezra,” I murmured, voice low but steady. “We need to move.”She didn’t look up immediately. Her grip stayed on my shirt like she wasn’t ready to let go of the tiny piece of safety she had found. But when she finally lifted her face, her eyes were red—filled with fear and exhaustion, but iron deeper inside.“What is it?” she whispered.“Not here,” I said.
