My Daughter Died Because Of My Wife
Penulis: Sweet Beet

Chapter 1

Penulis: Sweet Beet
After the cremation, I returned home with my daughter, Anjou’s ashes.

Lani Fort had already arrived home before me. She asked me.

“You told me on the phone earlier that something was wrong with Anjou. Why didn’t you answer when I called you back?”

I looked down at the urn in my arms and replied calmly.

“It’s nothing. Anjou is fine. She’s currently being treated at the hospital.”

Lani looked visibly relieved.

“That’s good. Anjou is the eldest granddaughter of the Fort family.

“My mom loves her the most. Nothing can happen to her.”

Her gaze fell on the box in my hands.

“What’s that you’re holding?”

My fingers tightened instinctively as I struggled to keep my expression calm.

“In three days, it’s Maryam’s 70th birthday. This is my gift for her.”

My mother-in-law, Maryam, had her daughter late in life. She only gave birth to Lani when she was nearly forty.

Anjou’s birth made her cherish her even more deeply.

I could already imagine how impactful the scene would be in three days, when she received this gift.

Lani nodded with satisfaction.

“At least you put some thought into it. Hand over the receipt. How much did this gift cost? I’ll reimburse you.”

Ever since I quit my job, I have had to bring her receipts for every single household expense to get reimbursed.

As long as she considered it a reasonable and necessary expense, she would transfer the full amount to me.

But if she thought it was an unnecessary expense, I have to cover it myself. She would not contribute a single cent.

I clutched the urn tightly in my arms as my voice turned cold.

“No, thank you. This is just a small token of my love for Maryam. Please don’t reimburse me.”

No amount of money could bring my daughter back to life.

I got up and walked over to the nursery next to me.

I placed the urn in my hands on the crib, pulled up the soft little blanket, and gently tucked it around her, bit by bit.

I had already washed all the little clothes in the room and disinfected all the toys.

That morning, Anjou was still lying in her crib, playing happily.

She had returned to the crib as a cold, little box.

Lani followed me in and confronted me.

“Noel Taft, are you throwing a tantrum at me just because I didn’t answer your call this afternoon?”

I looked up at her.

“Do I even have the right to throw a tantrum?”

108 calls. If she had answered just one of them, my child might have had a glimmer of hope.

Lani frowned.

“What’s gotten into you today? You’re acting so strange.

“Is Anjou not doing well? Which hospital is she in? I’ll go see her.”

“Noel, I came to see you today because I want to take you somewhere.”I gave her a nonchalant glance.“I’m not interested.”Lani would not let it go.“If you don’t come with me today, I’m not leaving.”My mom could not hold back any longer. She raised her hand and slapped her hard across the face.“After everything you’ve done, what right do you have to keep hounding my son?!“Get out of here or I’ll call the police!”Lani’s face was knocked to one side by the slap.“You can hit and yell at me all you want.“But unless Noel comes with me, I’m not leaving.”The neighborhood was bustling with people, and quite a few passersby were looking over at us.I looked at her.“Lani, our divorce hearing is next week. It’s pointless for you to be pestering me at this point.”Lani hesitated for a moment, then finally relented.“Noel, if you come with me to that place and still insist on getting a divorce, I’ll sign the papers.”I did not think there was anything left that could make

“I don’t need you making a scene here. Get out!”Lani knew that she was in the wrong, so she just stood there, taking in the blows and insults.“There’s been a misunderstanding between me and Noel. I came here today to set the record straight with him.”My dad lay in his hospital bed, glaring at her. His chest heaved violently.“Lani Fort, you’ve wronged my son, and you even caused the death of your own flesh-and-blood daughter. How dare you show your face here again?”Fearing that my dad’s emotions might flare up and lead to trouble, I hurried forward and pushed Lani out of the hospital room.“If you have something to say, say it outside. Don’t provoke my dad right here!”My mom was afraid she would do me wrong and anxiously followed me out.I turned around and stopped her.“Mom, stay in the room and watch over Dad. I’ll be fine.”“But…”“No ‘buts’. I’m an adult now. I can handle my own affairs.”My mom glanced at Lani, but still urged me with concern.“Just don’t go too

Warren gripped Lani’s wrist.“Lani, I was the one you used to love. It was Noel who took advantage of the situation while I was abroad. That’s why you ended up marrying him.“Now that I’m back, divorce him, and I’ll marry you.”Lani abruptly shook off Warren’s grip.“You’re wrong. Right now, I just feel resentful toward you.“Back then, you left me to go abroad. I begged you so much, but you never looked back. Now that you’re back, you’re relying on me for everything.“That gave me a great sense of satisfaction. I’d been completely submissive to you simply to get back at you for what you did to me back then. I’m abandoning you just when you depend on and trust me the most.“You’ll experience the resentment and pain I felt back then. I know very well that the person I love now is Noel.”Back then, when she was heartbroken, I had stood by her side, encouraging her and helping her get through it. Little by little, I had won over her heart.Warren stared at her in utter shock.“N

The urn I handed Maryam at the birthday celebration had been a decoy. There was no way I would let my child’s ashes be smashed and trampled on in front of so many people.I carefully cradled my child’s urn and buried her beneath a pear tree in the backyard.“Baby, Daddy’s so sorry. Daddy couldn’t take good care of you.“This pear tree has been Daddy’s companion since I was a child. Now that I’ve buried you here, I hope it will always be with you so you won’t be lonely.”Tears streamed down my cheeks.“Next time, before you’re reborn, be sure to choose a happy, harmonious family with parents who love you.”I chatted with my child for a long time. It was not until dusk fell that I slowly got up and left.Back at the hospital, I wiped the tears from my face before heading upstairs to my father’s hospital room.My dad was hooked up to tubes, but he was fully conscious. The moment he saw me, he noticed my red, swollen eyes.“Noel, your eyes…”I walked over to the bedside and hel

Silence filled the air.Maryam was so startled that she dropped the box she was holding onto the floor.“I think you’re just trying to make my life miserable on purpose. It’s my birthday, and you give me an urn. Are you wishing me an early death?!”Anger flashed across Lani’s face as well.“Noel, what on earth are you up to?!”I chuckled softly. “This is our daughter, Anjou!”Lani snapped angrily.“What kind of nonsense are you spouting? Why would you curse a child for no reason? Do you really think I won’t teach you a lesson?”I took out my daughter’s death certificate and cremation certificate, issued by the hospital a few days ago, from my bag and flung them in front of Lani.Lani caught the documents and flipped through them, but her expression grew increasingly grim.“No, I don’t believe it. These documents must be forged.“The child has always been fine. How could she have suddenly died?!”Maryam looked startled.“What do you mean, ‘died’? Who died?”In front of eve

I opened my mouth to defend myself.“No, I didn’t harm them…”Lani snapped. “Who else could it be but you?“Noel, when did you become so vicious that you couldn’t even tolerate a few dogs?”I caught a flash of smugness crossed Warren’s sorrowful face.I instantly realized that it had all been Warren’s scheme.“It was him! He drugged the dogs himself beforehand and deliberately framed me!”Warren said with a look of grievance.“Noel, how could you slander me? Pudding is my beloved dog, and I treat the puppies she gave birth to like my own children. How could I possibly harm them?”I stared at him coldly.“You’re the one who poisoned them. No matter how carefully you covered your tracks, you’d leave some trace. Just check your purchase history…”Lani screamed angrily, “Enough!“Noel, you’re still trying to wriggle out of this? Apologize to Warren right now and beg for forgiveness to atone to these eight dogs!”My eyes widened in shock.“Do you want me to beg for forgiveness
