Chapter 2

Autor: GOGO
His words cut straight through an old wound I’d never managed to heal.

I hadn’t caused the miscarriage.

That day, Chloe had suddenly sent me a photo.

Adrian was sitting at a table during a business dinner, with a woman in a spaghetti-strap dress practically pressed against him.

Her hand was almost resting on his thigh.

Then Chloe sent me a furious voice message.

“Hailey, that cheating bastard is messing around with another woman! Don’t panic. I’m getting someone over there to deal with him right now!”

My heart had leaped into my throat.

Even though I was pregnant, I rushed out into the rain to stop things from getting out of hand.

On the way there, I missed a step and fell down a flight of stairs.

When I woke up, my baby was gone.

Later, Chloe held me while I cried and blamed herself for telling me.

She said she’d only done it because she cared about me too much.

And I believed her.

Back then, it never occurred to me that her supposed concern had been calculated from the very beginning.

And now, I was pregnant again.

I’d planned to bring the pregnancy test results to Adrian’s grave and tell him about our baby.

Except Adrian wasn’t dead.

And by the time I had the chance to tell him myself, Chloe was already standing beside him, pregnant with his child.

There was no point in telling him anymore.

An airport operations manager hurried over with two security officers.

“What’s going on here?”

Adrian immediately pulled Chloe behind him, his expression turning grave.

“Her name is Hailey Chandler. She lost a baby before, and she never recovered from it. She hasn’t been mentally stable since.

“I don’t know how Customs could allow someone like her to conduct inspections.

“She’s stopping a pregnant woman from boarding her flight. If something happens to the baby, which one of you is going to take responsibility?”

The manager frowned at me.

Ignoring the pain still throbbing through my lower abdomen, I pointed at Chloe’s bag.

“I suspect that heart-shaped stone contains part of one of our country’s most important ancient treasures, the Stone Drums.”

The moment I finished speaking, Adrian burst out laughing.

“Hailey, you’re getting more delusional by the minute.

“I studied history. I’m the deputy director of a museum now.

“The Stone Drums you’re talking about are real. They’re among the country’s greatest national treasures, and they’re carved with inions dating back thousands of years.

“But they weigh nearly a ton.”

He gave me a mocking look.

“So tell me, how exactly did Chloe stuff a one-ton artifact inside a tiny polished stone?”

Laughter erupted around us.

Adrian continued coldly, “I understand that losing the baby messed you up. But you don’t get to bring your delusions to work.”

Chloe’s eyes filled with tears again.

She pulled out her phone and opened her social media profile.

It was filled with videos she’d made about traditional arts and cultural heritage.

She had hundreds of thousands of followers.

“Sir, I create content about traditional cultural heritage. I’ve spent years promoting and preserving our country’s traditions.

“Hailey is publicly accusing me of smuggling a national treasure out of the country. She’s trying to destroy my career.”

The crowd immediately turned against me.

“She makes cultural heritage videos. Why would someone like that steal an artifact?"

“This woman is terrifying. Just because she lost her own baby doesn’t mean she has to hate every pregnant woman she sees.”

“Someone get her out of here. She’s holding up everyone else.”

Adrian turned to the manager.

“Have security remove her.

“I want to file a formal complaint for abuse of authority and harassment of a passenger.”

I opened my mouth.

“Adrian, actually, I’m pregnant too…”

But before I could finish, one of the security officers clamped a hand over my mouth.

The two of them grabbed my arms and started dragging me away.

Then an announcement came over the speakers.

“Final boarding call for the flight to Australia. The aircraft doors will be closing shortly. All remaining passengers should proceed to the gate immediately.”

I watched helplessly as Adrian supported Chloe and led her toward the jet bridge.

No.

I couldn’t let that artifact leave the country.

I bit down hard on the security officer’s hand.

He cried out and instinctively let go.

I tore free and sprinted down the jet bridge.

Just as the aircraft door was about to close, I reached the emergency mechanism and yanked it down.

Bang!

The emergency slide deployed.

Screams erupted throughout the plane.

Adrian completely lost it.

He raised his hand to slap me.

“Hailey, how many people do you have to hurt before you’re satisfied?”

But his hand never reached me.

My parents got to me first.

My mother slapped me across the face.

Then my father kicked me hard enough to drive me down onto one knee.

Six months later, restoration of the Stone Drum fragment was complete.I attended the ceremony marking its return on behalf of Customs.Under the lights, the fragment Chloe had once ground into a heart-shaped stone was carefully fitted back into its protective base by the restoration team. The cracks were still there. But the ancient inions were visible again.Looking at it, I suddenly thought of the two babies I had lost. Some things could be broken and repaired.Others, once lost, could never be brought back. After the ceremony, the officer who had led the Customs Tactical Unit handed me a bouquet.“Congratulations, Director Chandler.“Your commendation came through. You received one of the department’s highest honors for this case.”I accepted the flowers with a smile.“It wasn’t just me.”He looked at me as if he wanted to say something, then hesitated.“Adrian came today too. He’s been waiting outside for a while.”I followed his gaze.At the bottom of the steps st

I didn’t attend Chloe’s trial. The officer from Customs told me the outcome afterward. She was convicted on multiple charges, including attempting to smuggle a nationally protected cultural artifact out of the country, illegally cutting and damaging the artifact, and using falsified documentation to take it overseas. She was sentenced to twelve years in prison.Chloe nearly collapsed from crying in the courtroom. She claimed she had simply made one terrible mistake. She said the overseas buyer had told her it was nothing more than a worthless piece of old stone and that no one would ever notice. She begged for leniency because she was pregnant and didn’t want her child to be born without a mother. The judge asked her only one question.“When you made videos about preserving cultural heritage, did you know that historical artifacts can never be replaced?”Chloe had no answer.Of course she knew.In fact, she understood the value of that fragment better than most people ever

The day I was discharged, my parents were waiting outside the hospital. In just a few days, streaks of gray had appeared in my mother’s hair. She was holding a thermos in one hand, her eyes swollen from crying.“Hailey, I made you some soup.“It was always your favorite when you were little.”I glanced at it but didn’t take it.My father held out a bank card, his voice barely audible.“This has all the savings your mother and I have put away over the years.“We know money can’t make up for what we did, but you still need time to recover…”I cut him off.“I needed time to recover after I lost my first baby too.“After you signed the consent form for the procedure, did either of you ever make me soup?”My mother’s hand jerked. The thermos nearly slipped from her grasp.“Hailey, back then, we really thought…”“Thought what?”I looked at her.“That because I was emotional, I didn’t deserve to be a mother?“That Adrian was still young and shouldn’t be tied down by a child?

News of Chloe’s arrest spread online almost immediately. At first, people were simply shocked.A cultural heritage influencer with hundreds of thousands of followers had built her entire platform around protecting traditional culture.Yet behind the scenes, she had taken a fragment of an ancient Stone Drum, ground it into a heart-shaped trinket, and tried to smuggle it out of the country. Then footage from the airport leaked online. That was when the internet truly exploded. The videos showed me pinned to the floor while people called me crazy. They showed Adrian kicking me until I collapsed and started bleeding. And through it all, Chloe hid in his arms, crying as if she were the innocent victim.Someone even clipped Adrian saying, “I’ll spend summers with her and winters with you.”Then they paired it with a photo of him kneeling outside my hospital room, begging to see me.Within hours, it had become one of the most mocked memes online. The comments poured in.“A cultur

When I woke up, I was already in the hospital. The sharp smell of antiseptic filled my nose.My lower abdomen felt hollow, as though someone had carved a piece out of me.The Customs officer who had led the tactical team was sitting beside my bed. The moment he saw my eyes open, he stood.“Director Chandler, the doctor said you suffered severe blood loss. The baby…”He stopped, his eyes turning red.“They couldn’t save the baby.”I closed my eyes. The moment Adrian kicked me to the floor, I’d already known. But hearing the words out loud still left me struggling to breathe. Two babies. The first had been deliberately given up on while I lay unconscious in an operating room. The second had been taken from me by a kick from its own father.A nurse placed a crumpled pregnancy report on the table beside my bed.She quietly told me they’d found it in my pocket. One corner was stained red with blood. The words “early intrauterine pregnancy” stared back at me like one final, c

The moment the words left my mouth, the Customs Tactical Unit split into three teams. One secured the aircraft door.Another began evacuating the passengers. The third went straight for Chloe. All the color drained from her face. She instinctively ducked behind Adrian, her voice trembling.“What right do you have to search me?“I’m pregnant! I have a baby inside me. None of you have the right to touch me!”The officer in command gave her a cold look.“You’re suspected of attempting to smuggle a protected national artifact out of the country. Pregnancy does not exempt you from inspection.”The passengers who had been filming and insulting me moments ago suddenly fell silent. Some quietly lowered their phones.Others backed away with pale faces, apparently worried that their earlier insults had been caught on camera.Adrian finally seemed to process the words “Director Chandler.”His face went white.“Hailey? A director?”He looked from me to the Customs officers as if so
