Chapter 5

Author: Anonymous
Mom's hair had fallen loose around her face. She looked completely unhinged.

The boys who had bullied me shrank against their parents and pointed at Caleb. Tyler Grant broke first.

"It was Caleb. He took us there. Why don't you ask him? He was the one who—"

Caleb roared before he could finish. He charged into them and started swinging, and from where I stood, I saw him lean close enough to whisper.

"If you want to go to prison, keep talking."

They were still kids. The threat worked.

  • My Death Drove Mom Insane   Chapter 8

Caleb had saved his darkest side for me.I had known since childhood that my brother wasn't a good person. He was violent, quick-tempered, and cruel. I tried to correct him whenever I could, and every time, he told our parents I was bullying him. They never asked questions. They hit me. They cursed me. They called me filthy, rotten, an animal. Now the truth was finally in front of them.Mom fell to the floor and began hitting her head against the ground. "I was wrong."I was wrong."You're the one who was rotten."Then she started crying for me. "Noah. My Noah."Dad's legs gave out too. He didn't want to believe what he'd heard, but the truth was standing in front of him.Police took everyone in for questioning. Caleb walked with them as if none of it mattered. At the station, he smiled at the officers."The case was already closed."You don't have evidence that I killed Noah."And today? Nobody died."He shrugged. "It was just a friendly fight between classmates."The las

Caleb's plan was clever. If one person took the blame, he could walk away.Police brought in a forensic psychiatrist. Investigators gathered around Mom and asked her how she had hit me.She curled into herself and cried. "I was wrong."I shouldn't have hit Noah."Forgive Mom, Noah."The psychiatrist observed her for a long time. His conclusion was that Mom had genuinely lost her mind, and that what she was saying was very likely the truth.Caleb rushed forward at exactly the right moment. He spread his arms in front of Mom and lifted his chin."You're wrong!"Mom didn't kill Noah!"Tears clung to his lashes and his voice shook. It was the performance of someone trying desperately to protect his mother, which, of course, made the investigators look at him more closely. Caleb had been in the nurse's office that day too. They started questioning him. At first he answered calmly, then the questions became sharper, and eventually he broke down sobbing and covered his face. Behind

My funeral was held the next day at a funeral home across town. Caleb was told to stand at the front of the room and greet the mourners as they came in.He looked annoyed. "He used to get out of my way. Now I have to stand here grieving him?"It was almost a mutter. Mom turned sharply. "What did you say?"Caleb recovered instantly. "I said okay, Mom. What's wrong?"He fussed over her, pretending concern, and Mom convinced herself she'd misheard because of grief. The boys who had helped bully me came to the service too, and they kept looking toward Caleb like he was their leader. Mom saw them and lost it. She went after them down the center aisle, swinging hard enough to make them run for the doors with their arms over their heads.Caleb's expression darkened. He caught her by the wrist and stopped her."Enough!"It's Noah's funeral. They're not convicted murderers. They came to pay respects. What exactly is wrong with that?"For the first time in his life, Caleb shouted at Mom

The threat worked.Caleb's face flipped in an instant and he started crying. "How can you accuse me?"That was my brother! Why would I want him dead?"He absolutely would. But his performance was perfect.Mom rushed to protect him, checking him over in a panic. "Caleb, I know you're angry, but your brother is gone. I can't lose you too."You be good. Let Mom and Dad handle revenge."She stood in front of him like a shield.Police separated everyone and began taking statements. Caleb had bullied people for years, b

Alvarez scoffed. Then Principal Harris appeared behind them. He looked wrecked, his eyes swollen red. He pointed at Mom with a shaking hand."What kind of mother are you?"That boy was your child too. His life had barely started. How could you leave him in the nurse's office to die?"He broke into a hard coughing fit. In a single day, he seemed to have aged ten years.I moved toward him, wishing he could see me smile. It's okay. Please don't be sad. I'm not hurting anymore.Mom collapsed, and large tears hit the floor.Dad and Caleb came out into the hallway. The moment Caleb heard what had happened, his legs gave out."Noah..."It's my fault. I killed my brother. Mom, hit me. Beat me to death."He grabbed Mom's hand and slapped himself with it again and again. Mom barely reacted. She just stared ahead and whispered my name. The officers stopped questioning her for the moment and told my parents where my body had been taken. Mom jumped up so quickly she stepped on Caleb's ha

Maybe I wanted her to notice so badly that the school finally called."Mrs. Bennett, are both boys all right? That fight today was serious. I don't want either of them suffering complications, especially Noah. That boy was badly injured—"Mom's eyes narrowed. Then she laughed coldly."Principal Harris, did Noah put you up to this?"What could possibly be wrong with him? That little animal bullies his brother, then runs off crying to adults."Her breathing grew heavy with anger."You tell him if he's so brave, he can stay gone forever."I almost laughed. For once, Mom had gotten exactly what she wanted. I really wasn't coming home.Principal Harris was silent for a long moment. Then he asked, uneasily, "Noah isn't at home?""Isn't he with you? Why else would you be calling?" Mom sounded annoyed. "Don't play games with me. This is family business. Noah lies constantly. Don't let him fool you."She genuinely believed I had hidden at the principal's house and asked him to defend
