Chapter 2

Author: SafeTree
I fell heavily to the ground, and my head struck the bedside table with a sharp crack. A wave of intense dizziness washed over me.

From the other side of the hospital bed, I could hear them speaking, but their voices were warped and distant, as if they belonged to another world entirely.

"Liam, what is wrong with you? How could you push your own mother?" Jonah shouted, raising his hand as though to punish him.

Suzanne immediately clung to his arm. "He's just a child, Jonah! Don't you dare!"

I knew it was just for show. Jonah would never actually hit Liam.

Fear flashed across Liam's face, but he lifted his chin defiantly. "She was being mean to Suz! I did the right thing!"

A loud slap echoed through the room, and everyone froze in disbelief. They all stared at me, unable to process what I had just done.

My forehead was split open, and blood was already trickling down to my neck.

Liam's head jerked to the side from the impact, and his pale cheek was stamped with a red handprint. In the blink of an eye, he burst into tears.

"How dare you hit me! I hate you! You're the worst mommy ever!"

He ran out of the door, crying uncontrollably.

Suzanne hurried after him.

Jonah looked at me in disbelief. After a long moment, he finally said, "Jenna, you love Liam more than anything. How could you…"

I said nothing. All I could feel was the stinging heat spreading across my palm.

I knew exactly why Jonah looked so stunned.

Liam was my child, and I used to cry over the tiniest cut on his finger. When he was just learning to walk, I followed him around like a shadow, terrified that he might fall. I had always been protective of Liam.

When other kids bullied him at kindergarten, I would show up and fight for him every time. I never let him endure even a moment of unfairness.

Liam and I had always been incredibly close, ever since he was a baby. He called me "Mommy" before he could say anything else.

And the first time he ever formed a sentence, he said, "I love you best, Mommy."

He used to make me warm honey lemon tea when I was on my period. He would warm his tiny hands and place them gently over my belly to ease the pain.

He always said he loved me more than anyone, even his father, but that all changed this year.

Now, all because Suzanne liked snakes, he had swapped my gift without a single thought for my fear. And when I wouldn't accept her flowers, he shoved me off the bed.

My heart ached for just a moment, but the feeling passed quickly.

Jonah studied my face intently, searching for a trace of regret or sorrow. To his shock, he found nothing at all.

A flicker of confusion passed through his eyes. He reached for my hand and flinched at how cold it was.

"Liam didn't mean to push you. Suzanne has spent a lot of time playing with him lately. He just thinks of her as a friend, so he misunderstood and thought you were bullying her. Don't be too hard on him…

"Once you're out of the hospital, why don't we take a family portrait together?"

The words "family portrait" made me pause. As a child, I had always envied other kids when I saw them taking photos with their parents.

However, Dad was always buried in endless work.

We never took that family portrait. Dad kept postponing it until my mother died, and by then it was too late.

The longing for it had lingered with me ever since.

Before I could say anything, Liam shouted from the doorway, "I don't want to take pictures with her! I want a family portrait with Suz!"

Suzanne looked down, pretending to be shy. "Is that really alright? I've never taken a family portrait before."

Jonah turned to me. I was still glued to my phone.

"Go ahead," I said without looking up.

A wave of emptiness washed over him. He tried to pat my head, but I shifted aside. His hand froze in the space between us, and he sounded slightly displeased. "You're okay with this?"

"Yes," I replied firmly.

He walked to the door, then stopped and looked back.

"Jenna, if you ask me to stay, I will."

I looked up and smiled.

"I don't mind at all. I hope you have a good time."

Jonah's expression darkened. He stormed off, as if to prove a point.

Soon, I could hear the three of them laughing and talking just outside the door.

Suzanne put on her usual sweet act. "Are you sure it's alright if it's just the three of us? Maybe we should wait for Jenna…"

Jonah replied flatly, "It's fine. We can always do another one after she's discharged."

Liam cheered, "Awesome! I want to stand right in the middle!"

Their voices gradually faded, and soon, the room fell silent.

I touched my chest and found only peace there.

After wallowing in despair for several days, I suddenly turned to Jonah."You were right. As long as I don't give up, there's still hope. I should keep fighting."Jonah, who had been working beside my bed, jerked his head up. His eyes lit up with joy."Jenna, you've finally come around."Liam immediately set his book aside and hurried to my bedside. He reached up and gently patted my head. "Don't worry, Mommy. I'll stay right here with you. I'll help you get better, I promise."I smiled and nodded.Jonah and Liam both let out sighs of relief, believing that I had finally turned a corner. In the days that followed, I threw myself into treatment with a cheerful face and a cooperative spirit, as though I had somehow transformed back into the woman I once was.Jonah smiled more often too.He painted a picture of our future without end, describing how the three of us would traverse the globe once I had recovered. Our wealth, he insisted, was more than we could ever exhaust. When I opened my eyes again, I found myself lying in a hospital bed, my body covered in monitors and tubes. As I tried to sit up, Jonah walked in."Don't move!"He hurried to my bedside and gently helped me into a sitting position. His eyes were bloodshot, as though he'd just been crying. "Jenna, why didn't you tell me you were this sick?""It wouldn't have changed anything. There's no cure anyway. If you really feel guilty about everything you've done to me, then let me leave the hospital. I don't want to spend what little time I have left trapped in here.""No! You're not going to die. I'll do whatever it takes to cure you!"My heart sank. This was what I'd been dreading. I couldn't let anything stop me from going home.Jonah was resolute. He embarked on a worldwide search for the foremost experts in brain tumor treatment. Eventually, he found one. After reviewing my medical records, the doctor shook his head gravely. "I've been practicing medicine for 30 years, and I hav

Suzanne immediately gave him an address, and Jonah turned the wheel to drive there without a second thought."The plane's about to take off," I said softly.A vein throbbed at Jonah's temple as he barked, "At a time like this, you're still thinking about your vacation? Didn't you hear Suz? She's in danger! Jenna, can you stop being so selfish for once?"Liam glanced hesitantly between us before ultimately siding with his father. "Mommy, we can go to Costa Perila any time. Suz needs us right now. We can't just turn our backs on her."I nodded and gestured for Jonah to pull over. Then, I opened the door and got out.He sighed in exasperation. "Do you really have to do this?"I slammed the car door shut without even bothering to answer.Seconds later, the car disappeared down the road.I headed to the airport alone. After settling into my seat on the plane, I checked my phone one last time before switching it off. Suzanne had posted another update. The post included a photo ta

Panic flashed through Suzanne's eyes, and she hurriedly explained, "I didn't mean anything by it. I just wanted to document our daily life. Those people online were the ones making wild guesses.""And besides, children say all sorts of things. Liam's only seven years old. No one actually believes a kid's words carry any weight. I'd bet no mother would. But here we are, making a scene at such an important event. I honestly don't understand what Jenna was trying to do."She brushed it off like it was nothing, and in a few casual sentences, she'd managed to make me the problem again.Jonah's attention shifted away from her and landed back on me. I let out a cold, humorless laugh.Without another glance at them, I turned and walked toward the exit.Jonah quickly caught up and grabbed my arm. "I'll drive you home."I pulled my hand away. "No, thanks."Jonah's expression turned sour. "Jenna! What is your problem? Do you have any idea how important tonight is to me?"The whole point o

Jonah spotted me at a glance, lying motionless at the bottom of the pool. He grabbed my hand and hauled me up.When he dragged me onto the pool deck, he saw the blood. It was pouring out fast, dripping off my face like I'd been hit. Before long, the red was all over my face.Jonah cupped my face with shaking hands. He said my name over and over, like he was trying to wake me from a sleep I might never come out of.Liam, who had been standing nearby, was frozen in shock as well. He rushed over, grabbed my hand, and cried out, "Mommy! Mommy, what's wrong with you?"Just as Jonah reached for his phone to dial an ambulance, I grabbed his hand.I slowly opened my eyes, covered my nose, and shook my head. "I'm fine.""How can you possibly be fine after losing that much blood?"I explained that I'd hit my nose on the way in, and that was what caused the bleeding. If I went to the hospital, Jonah would discover the tumor in my brain. I just wanted to slip away quietly, without dragging

Maybe my attitude finally pissed them off. Jonah and Liam didn't come home for an entire week.Fine by me. I didn't need the company anyway. The tumor wasn't being so generous, though. Every day I woke up, things were a little fuzzier. My hands didn't grip like they used to. My feet dragged more than they should. And somehow, that made me happy. Each day I got worse meant I was one day closer to being done with all of this.Suzanne updated her social media account every day. She documented all the places they had visited that week.Someone commented asking if they were her family.Liam said yes. He said she was his mom.I stared at the screen. Then, a drop of blood hit it—right over his words. It seemed like I was liking the post in the most messed up way.I held my nose and walked to the bathroom. Suddenly, my phone rang from the sink.It was Jonah. After a whole week of silence, he was finally calling. He said there was a charity gala tomorrow night and he needed me to co
