Chapter 2

Autor: Jersey Wind
Six months later, news came from the kingdom afar that Leopold's life was in danger from a strange hex, and Maxine went crazy over it. She summoned all the renowned physicians in the kingdom to find an antidote to cure his hex.

However, the ingredients for the antidote were extremely powerful, and a slight mistake in the measurement was fatal. She needed someone to test the antidote, and I was chosen.

Two powerful guards pressed me down, and Maxine forced my mouth open to feed me the dark, lethal liquid.

My insides were burning, and my veins throbbed from the intense pain coursing through my body. I clenched my teeth and did not utter a sound, but the tiles were left with ten bloody scratches on them.

All Maxine did was watch me in pain. She wiped her hands with her white handkerchief and looked coldly at me. "It's your honor to be able to test the antidote for Leo."

To hell with honor.

Would you want honor like this?

That incident caused me to lie sick in bed for two weeks. It was also then that I no longer harbored any hope for Maxine's promise to me. I no longer wanted her protection. All I wanted was money.

So, I negotiated with her, and we agreed that every time I tested the antidote, my salary would be tripled. If poison was involved, my salary would be increased tenfold.

Over the next five years, the amount of black-colored blood I threw up would be enough to fill up the ponds in her garden, but the gold coins in my bag increased as well.

The poison residue in her body was cleared, and I had earned enough. We were even.

"I'll be leaving the palace to attend a ritual tomorrow," Maxine interrupted my thoughts.

I bowed and replied calmly, "Yes, Your Highness."

If she thought I was going to clean the medicine furnace, she was wrong. I would be leaving early the next morning, as I had been bestowed the grace of being released from the palace, and I would be leaving this godforsaken place forever.

I never wanted to see her again.

Besides working at the palace, I also took up side jobs.

After all, despite having a healthy income for testing the antidote, it was not every day I could make that money. My goal was to earn a lot of money and buy myself a big house when I left the palace, so I set my sights on the Outer Keep, where punished royals were sent.

The blind ninth princess, Helena Somerset, was banished there. She also had to survive multiple assassinations. She had many enemies, and an old servant of a noble person gave me a bag of silver to deliver rancid meals to Helena in the dark night and to check if she had died.

I was very efficient because of the payment.

It was winter the first time I visited the Outer Keep. There was no coal in Helena's room to make a fire for warmth, and she was shivering in a corner in thin clothes, turning purple from the cold.

She was highly defensive, like a prickly porcupine. When she heard my footsteps, she picked up some shards on the ground and threw them in my direction aimlessly.

"Get lost!" Her voice was hoarse and filled with malice.

However, I ignored her. I put her rancid meal onto the floor and turned to leave, but she suddenly quivered violently and curled into a ball. It was so bad that she could hardly hold onto the shard. She was about to freeze to death.

If she died, my long-term income from spying on her would be gone.

I sighed and walked over to grab the shard in her hand. I flung it away and took out a small piece of coal I had stolen from the Crown Princess' private quarters to light it up. Flames began to spark, and the entire room was filled with warmth.

Helena felt the heat, and she stopped struggling. She followed the source of the heat and slowly moved closer to me. She buried her head in my arms and hugged me tightly around the waist, absorbing the warmth from my body.

I did not push her away. I had nothing better to do anyway, and thought of it as hugging an ice pack.

Since then, I would visit the Outer Keep often for many nights. I would chase away the palace servants who took advantage of her and bullied her. I would hide clean, hot food under the rancid ones for her.

During the coldest months, I would let her cling to me like an octopus to warm her cold limbs with my body. She could not see, but she remembered my scent.

Every time I got up to leave, she would clutch at my sleeve, as if I was the only thing she had in the world. Her blind eyes were filled with fear as she called out hoarsely to me, "Don't go. Stay with me."

  • My Departure Gave the Noblewomen Nervous Breakdowns   Chapter 10

It started when I realized that I had led a much too comfortable life and the mansion was too large for me to manage on my own. So, I got my housekeeper to find a few people in the market to help with the chores.I needed an accountant, a guard, and a scholar. Even though I was not taking any exams, I enjoyed listening to others read stories for me. My demands were simple. They had to be cheap and obedient. It took only a few days for the housekeeper to bring them to me.I was sitting in my chair, wiping down my broadsword when I swept a gaze at the new hires. It was only a glance, but it was enough for me to almost drop my broadsword. What a small world, or should I say, what thick skin these three women had. The one on the far left was the newly hired accountant. She was in a plain, green cotton dress that had been washed so many times it was almost white, and she looked pale as a sheet of paper. She was also clutching a bloodstained handkerchief."Mr. Hoard."She held her he

There was dead silence in front of the palace gates. All of the guards were frightened by the sight, and they knelt on the ground, not daring to look up.Maxine, Helena, and Jaela were surrounding me and blocking my way from the palace gates. They glared at each other, badly wanting to cut one another into pieces. When they turned to look at me, the murderous looks in their eyes turned into pathetic pleading. Maxine could hardly stand from her violent coughing. The blood on the corner of her lips was barely dry when she tried to reach out to me, saying in a broken voice, "Don't go… I'm begging you. Please stay…"Helena's feet were still bleeding, and she stood on her bloody footprints with tears in her eyes. She stared at me like an abandoned orphan as she said, "You lied to me. You told me you'd always be by my side…"Jaela was heaving, and her aloof eyes were watery. She clenched her fist and said in a trembling voice, "I'll marry you. I'll give you everything I have as my dow

I stood up and looked at Helena, who was still on the ground. "Your Highness, did you think that I let you use my body for warmth because I took pity on you?" I burst out with a laugh. "It was only because a noble's servant had paid me in silver to spy on you, wanting to know if you were dead. The only reason I gave you my coal for fire was that if you died, I would lose my long-term income.'Helena trembled, looking at me in despairing disbelief with her reddened eyes. Finally, I turned to Jaela. I smiled tauntingly. "As for you, Your Eminence. Do you really think I collected dew every morning to wipe the floor and tolerated your obsession with hygiene because I idolized you for being a deity on earth? "It was because the salary at Stargazing Tower is double the amount of all other work in the palace and has the highest reward for servants at every festivity."I walked to my bed and picked up my heavy bag. I opened up a small gap to show everyone the contents. The bag was fil

Helena and Jaela, who were entangled in a fight, stopped. All three of us looked in the direction of the door.It was Crown Princess Maxine, who was staggering through the door with the help of her palace maids. She was still wearing her coat and was only in a thin, yellow nightgown. Her pale, sickly face looked even paler and had no color in it.She pushed her maids aside and stumbled through my door on her own, clutching a scroll in her hand. It was the edict for my release from the palace.Maxine used all of her strength to tear the edict in front of all of us in half. Her knuckles turned purple from using all her strength, and she stared at me pleadingly with despair. "You won't be able to leave now."I stared at the two halves of the edict and finally frowned. I had paid a lot of money to get my hands on that edict! My expression turned cold. "What do you mean by this, Your Highness?"Maxine did not reply, but she suddenly started coughing violently. Blood splattered from h

"A charlatan like you has no right to interfere in my business!" Helena ignored Jaela as she stepped through the door, coming straight at me.She moved surprisingly fast, and before I could pull out my dagger, she already had me by the collar, and I was shoved hard against the wall. Her cold blade was pressed against my neck, and the blood from its previous victim flowed down my collarbone, drenching my collar. It was sticky and disgusting.Helena stared right into my eyes, enraged. Her voice quivered, "Who gave you the courage to get married?!"My back was against the cold wall, and a sword was pressed against my neck, but I was not afraid. I was not afraid of death when Maxine fed me poison that burned me internally. Why would I be afraid of her sword?I stared blankly at her crazed demeanor. "Your Highness, I am now of age to accept the palace's grace to leave and get married. These are all in accordance with palace regulations.""To hell with palace regulations!"Helena punch

Jaela suddenly lost her composure, and I saw panic and disbelief in her usually aloof eyes. Her fingers gripped my shoulders like clamps with unusual force.I looked at her like she was crazy. Was this still the deity on earth who never allowed anyone to even touch the corner of her dress? Her grip was heavy on my shoulders, and I shrugged her grip off with great difficulty. "Please have some self-respect, Your Eminence."My words were like a slap to Jaela, as she quickly pulled her hand away from me, but she continued staring at my face. She was heaving, and her usually cold and distant expression was replaced by fluster and anxiousness."You can't marry that palace maid," she said through clenched teeth.I found this funny. "I'm old enough to take a wife, and I'm of age to leave the palace. It's normal for me to want to marry a woman from my village. Why can't I marry her?""She's not good enough for you!" Jaela suddenly raised her voice, looking at me anxiously and in disbelie
