Chapter 1

I hid the last gold coin in the bottom pocket of my bag and gave it a good pat, feeling good about it. I would turn 25 the next morning, old enough to be released from the palace and become a free citizen.

The medicine furnace was still gurgling from the heat, with white, bitter smoke wafting in the air outside the crown princess' private quarters.

I picked up a porcelain cup filled with the herbal concoction and entered the bedchambers of the crown princess, Maxine Somerset.

She was lying on her bed and coughing violently. Her pale face had a smear of red caused by all the coughing.

I approached her and handed the cup to her. "It's time for your medicine, Your Highness."

Maxine did not take the bowl from me but instead gripped me hard on the wrist. Her grip was so strong that it hurt me in the bones, but she did not look at me. She was looking over my shoulder and staring into the air while muttering a name.

"Leo… Leo, is it cold where you are?"

I allowed her to grip my wrist as I looked stoically.

Leo. Leopold March.

He was a political hostage married off to a faraway kingdom and Maxine's lost love. She had never forgotten him.

I remained silent, but I moved my arm and forcefully pulled it away from her grip. After that, I placed the medicine on a redwood table by her bed. "The medicine is getting cold, Your Highness."

Maxine snapped out of her reverie and glanced at me. The distant aloofness in her eyes slowly returned as she picked up her bowl and finished the medicine in one gulp.

"The royal physician has informed me that I'm almost cleared of the poison residue in my body." She wiped her lips with a handkerchief. "You did well."

I lowered my head and replied, "Thank you, Your Highness."

Of course, I did well. I had been testing every poison I could find in this world for the past five years just to concoct the antidote to neutralize the hex on Leopold.

However, I was not a saint with a big heart. I was just a venal, common man who loved money.

My name was Jasper Hoard. I gave myself the name because I loved money and wanted to one day be the treasurer of my personal hoard of gold.

I was originally the Earl Marshal's illegitimate son.

To salvage the reputation of the Earl Marshal, his wife and lady of the House refused to acknowledge the existence of my mother and me.

When I was ten, my mother became seriously ill. I knelt in the muddy puddle in front of the Earl Marshal's house, begging for help until my knees bled from kneeling. However, all I received was a cold voice from the footman.

"If you don't have the money for medicine, then you deserve to die. Don't dirty the doorsteps of the honorable Earl Marshal."

I had already turned purple from shivering in the cold, and by the time I returned to the dilapidated church, my mother had stopped breathing. When she died, she was still clutching the prescription I had begged from others.

That was when I understood something. If I did not have money, all I had waiting for me was death. Without money, my father would pretend my mother and I never existed, and allow his wife to drive us to death.

In this world, money was the only thing that would never betray me.

I wrapped my mother in a straw mat and buried her before I sold myself to the Palace.

On the first day I entered the palace, I picked up a piece of silver on the ground greedily and did not notice where I was going. I knocked into the Crown Princess Maxine's carriage steps.

Her footman screamed for the guards to apprehend the assassin, and I was pressed to the ground. Maxine coughed while opening the carriage blinds. She was very beautiful and had an icy demeanor, but she was also weak in health and was constantly resting in bed.

"Take him back to my private quarters. I'll use him as a manservant."

That was how I started working for the crown princess.

Maxine was constantly on medication, and her body was extremely weak. The most life-threatening moment was when she had a high fever that refused to subside, and there was nothing left for the royal physician to do.

To ensure my job security, I took care of her for three days and three nights without sleeping a wink, and I managed to keep her alive, albeit barely.

When she woke up, she leaned on my shoulder weakly and made me a promise in a soft voice, "You saved my life. I promise to protect you for the rest of yours."

I believed her then, thinking that I had met my fairy godmother as it was told in the storybooks, but it was all just a pipe dream.

It started when I realized that I had led a much too comfortable life and the mansion was too large for me to manage on my own. So, I got my housekeeper to find a few people in the market to help with the chores.I needed an accountant, a guard, and a scholar. Even though I was not taking any exams, I enjoyed listening to others read stories for me. My demands were simple. They had to be cheap and obedient. It took only a few days for the housekeeper to bring them to me.I was sitting in my chair, wiping down my broadsword when I swept a gaze at the new hires. It was only a glance, but it was enough for me to almost drop my broadsword. What a small world, or should I say, what thick skin these three women had. The one on the far left was the newly hired accountant. She was in a plain, green cotton dress that had been washed so many times it was almost white, and she looked pale as a sheet of paper. She was also clutching a bloodstained handkerchief."Mr. Hoard."She held her he

There was dead silence in front of the palace gates. All of the guards were frightened by the sight, and they knelt on the ground, not daring to look up.Maxine, Helena, and Jaela were surrounding me and blocking my way from the palace gates. They glared at each other, badly wanting to cut one another into pieces. When they turned to look at me, the murderous looks in their eyes turned into pathetic pleading. Maxine could hardly stand from her violent coughing. The blood on the corner of her lips was barely dry when she tried to reach out to me, saying in a broken voice, "Don't go… I'm begging you. Please stay…"Helena's feet were still bleeding, and she stood on her bloody footprints with tears in her eyes. She stared at me like an abandoned orphan as she said, "You lied to me. You told me you'd always be by my side…"Jaela was heaving, and her aloof eyes were watery. She clenched her fist and said in a trembling voice, "I'll marry you. I'll give you everything I have as my dow

I stood up and looked at Helena, who was still on the ground. "Your Highness, did you think that I let you use my body for warmth because I took pity on you?" I burst out with a laugh. "It was only because a noble's servant had paid me in silver to spy on you, wanting to know if you were dead. The only reason I gave you my coal for fire was that if you died, I would lose my long-term income.'Helena trembled, looking at me in despairing disbelief with her reddened eyes. Finally, I turned to Jaela. I smiled tauntingly. "As for you, Your Eminence. Do you really think I collected dew every morning to wipe the floor and tolerated your obsession with hygiene because I idolized you for being a deity on earth? "It was because the salary at Stargazing Tower is double the amount of all other work in the palace and has the highest reward for servants at every festivity."I walked to my bed and picked up my heavy bag. I opened up a small gap to show everyone the contents. The bag was fil

Helena and Jaela, who were entangled in a fight, stopped. All three of us looked in the direction of the door.It was Crown Princess Maxine, who was staggering through the door with the help of her palace maids. She was still wearing her coat and was only in a thin, yellow nightgown. Her pale, sickly face looked even paler and had no color in it.She pushed her maids aside and stumbled through my door on her own, clutching a scroll in her hand. It was the edict for my release from the palace.Maxine used all of her strength to tear the edict in front of all of us in half. Her knuckles turned purple from using all her strength, and she stared at me pleadingly with despair. "You won't be able to leave now."I stared at the two halves of the edict and finally frowned. I had paid a lot of money to get my hands on that edict! My expression turned cold. "What do you mean by this, Your Highness?"Maxine did not reply, but she suddenly started coughing violently. Blood splattered from h

"A charlatan like you has no right to interfere in my business!" Helena ignored Jaela as she stepped through the door, coming straight at me.She moved surprisingly fast, and before I could pull out my dagger, she already had me by the collar, and I was shoved hard against the wall. Her cold blade was pressed against my neck, and the blood from its previous victim flowed down my collarbone, drenching my collar. It was sticky and disgusting.Helena stared right into my eyes, enraged. Her voice quivered, "Who gave you the courage to get married?!"My back was against the cold wall, and a sword was pressed against my neck, but I was not afraid. I was not afraid of death when Maxine fed me poison that burned me internally. Why would I be afraid of her sword?I stared blankly at her crazed demeanor. "Your Highness, I am now of age to accept the palace's grace to leave and get married. These are all in accordance with palace regulations.""To hell with palace regulations!"Helena punch

Jaela suddenly lost her composure, and I saw panic and disbelief in her usually aloof eyes. Her fingers gripped my shoulders like clamps with unusual force.I looked at her like she was crazy. Was this still the deity on earth who never allowed anyone to even touch the corner of her dress? Her grip was heavy on my shoulders, and I shrugged her grip off with great difficulty. "Please have some self-respect, Your Eminence."My words were like a slap to Jaela, as she quickly pulled her hand away from me, but she continued staring at my face. She was heaving, and her usually cold and distant expression was replaced by fluster and anxiousness."You can't marry that palace maid," she said through clenched teeth.I found this funny. "I'm old enough to take a wife, and I'm of age to leave the palace. It's normal for me to want to marry a woman from my village. Why can't I marry her?""She's not good enough for you!" Jaela suddenly raised her voice, looking at me anxiously and in disbelie
