Chapter 35: Rehearsal

POV: Clara

I made it exactly to the top of the stairs before I let my face do what it wanted to do.

The smile held the whole walk out of the kitchen — I'm proud of that, honestly, proud of how smooth it came, how unbothered I looked setting the garment bag back over my arm like the conversation had cost me nothing at all. That's the part people never understand about control. It isn't the absence of feeling. It's knowing exactly which room gets to see it.

My room did no

  • My Ex Called Me Fat, Now His Father-in-Law Wants Me   Not to Contact This House Again

Chapter 92: Not to Contact This House AgainPOV: OdetteI found my parents in the morning room, my mother sorting through fabric swatches on the small table by the window, my father reading something on his tablet, coffee going cold at his elbow. I hadn't slept. The bruise on my chin had come up exactly the way I'd known it would, faint purple blooming along the bone, and I'd covered most of it with concealer before coming down, though I made sure not to cover all of it."I need to talk to you," I said. "Both of you."My mother glanced up, distracted. "Can it wait? I'm choosing between ivory and champagne for the table linens.""No."Something in my voice made her set the swatches down. My father looked up too, slower, more wary, the particular wariness he'd worn around me since the folder of evidence I'd handed him days ago."Julian grabbed my chin last night," I said. "Hard enough to bruise. Right here, on the porch, after dinner, the second you both went upstairs."I watched my mo

  • My Ex Called Me Fat, Now His Father-in-Law Wants Me   What He Promises Before the Wedding

Chapter 91: What He Promises Before the WeddingPOV: OdetteMy parents went up first, my mother already talking about seating charts before she'd fully left the dining room, and Julian offered to see me out for some air before he headed home himself, a gentleman's courtesy my father clearly approved of, given the pleased nod he gave on his way up the stairs.Nobody thought to ask whether I wanted the company. The hallway toward the side door ran dim, most of the lamps already switched off for the night, just the one above the coat closet still burning, and our footsteps echoed too loud against the marble, his a half-step behind mine the whole way, close enough that I felt it."That went well," Julian said, conversational, like the last hour hadn't happened at all."Did it.""Your parents seem pleased." He reached past me to open the side door, his arm brushing mine, and I stepped through fast, putting distance between us the second I could. The night air hit cold, the kind of cold tha

  • My Ex Called Me Fat, Now His Father-in-Law Wants Me   Under the Table

Chapter 90: Under the TablePOV: OdetteMy mother laid the table herself, which told me how much weight she had put on tonight mattering. Crystal instead of the usual china, three forks at every place setting, candles down the center already lit by the time I came downstairs, their flames trembling slightly every time the front door opened somewhere down the hall.I hadn't seen Julian Thorne since I was Eighteen, at some pack function I barely remembered, a tall boy with a hard mouth standing near his father, uninterested in anything happening around him. Five years had turned the boy into something sharper. He walked in wearing a suit that fit too well to be anything but tailored that week, every hair in place, a smile already arranged for my mother before he'd fully crossed the threshold."Alpha Sinclair." He shook my father's hand first, firm, easy, the particular confidence of a man who'd never once doubted his welcome anywhere. "Luna Sinclair." A small bow over my mother's han

  • My Ex Called Me Fat, Now His Father-in-Law Wants Me   Useful Men

Chapter 89: Useful MenPOV: JulianThe lounge my father kept on retainer sat on the top floor of a building he half-owned, the kind of place with no sign out front and a man at the elevator whose only job was deciding who didn't belong. I'd chosen it on purpose. Beckett Rhodes needed to understand, within thirty seconds of walking in, exactly how far outside his own weight class he'd wandered. He arrived four minutes late, which I noted, and dressed like a man who'd spent an hour deciding what casual-but-impressive looked like and gotten it slightly wrong anyway. Good watch, wrong jacket. I could smell the desperation on him before he'd even crossed the room, something sour underneath the cologne."Mr. Thorne." He stuck his hand out. I looked at it long enough to make the gesture uncomfortable before I took it, brief, dry."Sit."He sat. A waiter appeared without being summoned, poured two glasses of something dark and expensive, and left without a word. Beckett watched the whole tr

Chapter 88: Not a PossessionPOV: OdetteThe door didn't open. Whoever had touched the handle thought better of it, footsteps retreating down the hall a second later, unhurried. My father's man, probably, checking the clock on our ten minutes without actually crossing the threshold.I stepped back anyway, putting space between us. Nikolai's hand fell away from my jaw slowly, like he was reluctant to let the moment go even as I pulled myself out of it."Take it back," I said."Odette...""Take. It. Back."My voice cracked on the last word, and I hated it. Hated that I was already shaking before I'd even gotten to the part that actually mattered."You don't get to stand in this house and tell me I'm yours.""I didn't mean...""You meant exactly that."I crossed my arms, nails digging into my sleeves just to have something to hold onto."You stood there looking at me like you'd just solved something, like saying mine was supposed to fix my entire life. And all I could think about was ev

  • My Ex Called Me Fat, Now His Father-in-Law Wants Me   What's Mine

Chapter 87: What's MinePOV: OdetteThe east sitting room was cold even with the fire going, the kind of cold old houses never fully shook once the sun went down. Nikolai pulled the door shut behind us, and the click of the latch sounded too loud in the quiet.I stood near the window, arms crossed, watching rain streak sideways across the glass, my own reflection ghosting back at me, pale and tired."You shouldn't have come," I said."I'm aware.""My father is going to use this." My voice shook more than I wanted it to. "Every second you're standing in this house is one more thing he gets to hold against me tomorrow.""I know that too.""Then why are you here?"I spun to face him, and whatever I meant to say next caught in my throat at the sight of him. Rain still soaked through his shoulders, his jaw tight, his eyes darker than I'd ever seen them."Because I read the report behind the headline this morning, and I couldn't sit in my office another hour pretending it didn't apply to me
