Chapter 59: What He'll Never See

POV: Odette

Clara found us in the hallway outside the sitting room, Elena's door already closing behind a suitcase one of the house staff was hauling out. Her eyes moved from Elena's streaked face to my throat to her father, and something behind them was already working out what to say.

"Dad." Her voice came out small, trembling. Tears welled before she'd finished the sentence. "What's happening? Is Aunt Elena leaving?"

"You know exactly what's happening." Nikol

Chapter 62: Some Man With ChildrenPOV: OdetteMy mother reached me before the security detail did.Her hand closed around my upper arm, not gentle, fingers digging in through my sleeve, and she pulled me toward her with the exact motion I remembered from being a teenager who'd worn the wrong thing to a pack function."Don't fight me," she said, low, close to my ear. "Not here."I wasn't fighting her. I was still trying to remember how my legs worked. The cameras had closed in fast, a loose half-circle forming at a respectful distance that wasn't really respected, just the practiced spacing of people who knew exactly how far back to stand to still get the shot. Somewhere behind me a boy from my ethics seminar was filming on his phone. I recognized his backpack before I recognized his face. I'd sat next to him twice a week for a whole semester and he'd never once learned my last name. He was about to."Let go of me," I said."In a minute."My father hadn't moved from beside the car. He

Chapter 61: Five Years, UndonePOV: OdetteI didn't move. Some part of my brain was still trying to make it make sense. Wrong cars. Wrong campus. Some rich kid's parents making a scene about a parking ticket. There were a hundred explanations that didn't end with my life falling apart in the middle of a quad on a Tuesday afternoon.I knew better. My body knew better before my head caught up.Because I'd stood exactly like this once already, five years ago, frozen at a window in a one-bedroom apartment above a laundromat while three black cars sat idling on the street below. They hadn't done anything that day. They didn't have to. They'd just sat there for twenty minutes, engines running, then pulled away, and I'd spent the next month sleeping with my shoes on just in case. That was my father's method. He didn't chase. He arrived. The driver's door of the lead car opened first, and a man in a black suit stepped out. Then another, from the second car. Then two more.Six of them. Then ei

Chapter 60: Just AirPOV: OdetteI told Nikolai I needed to check on something at school. It wasn't a lie exactly; I did have a paper still sitting unfinished from before any of this started, an actual academic life I'd been neglecting since the ballroom turned my whole world sideways. Still, the real reason was something I didn't want to say out loud. I needed to be somewhere that didn't smell like that house. Somewhere thunder was just weather. He offered a driver. I said no. Some stubborn, worn-down part of me needed to get there on my own, on a bus, the way I used to move through the world before any of this started, before basements and scarves and a hand around my throat I still felt sometimes when I swallowed too fast. The bus smelled like wet umbrellas and somebody's fast food, and I sat near the back with my bag on my lap and let the city slide past the window without really watching it. Nobody on that bus knew what had happened in the last twelve hours. Nobody glanced at me

Tears welled before she'd finished the sentence. "What's happening? Is Aunt Elena leaving?""You know exactly what's happening." Nikolai's voice hadn't lost the flat calm from a few minutes ago. "I have footage, Clara. You leading Cai down that hallway. You lying to him about a surprise."Her chin dropped, and the tears came, quick and ready, like she'd had them waiting. I reminded myself I was watching this through eyes that had spent six weeks learning not to trust a single thing about her."It wasn't my idea," Clara said, her voice cracking on cue. "Elena told me to do it. She said it was just a game, a lesson, that Cai wou

Chapter 58: Thrown OutPOV: OdetteGreta got me a cup of tea I didn't drink. My throat was too raw for anything passing through it, so I just sat there with it cooling in my hands, wrapped in a blanket on a kitchen chair, while the house churned around me, staff moving fast in every direction, voices low and clipped in the hallway.Cai wouldn't leave my side. He sat pressed against my arm, still shaking, and fought off every attempt to get him into dry clothes until someone finally just peeled the wet shirt off him mid-conversation, talking to him the whole time so he had something else to listen to.Nikolai went to the security office himself. I only heard about it afterward, from Greta, who'd clearly been given enough of the details to pass along the shape of it, even if she smoothed the worst of it for my sake. The footage from the basement corridor showed all of it. Clara walking Cai down the hallway, her mouth moving in that patient, practiced way she used when she wanted to be b

Chapter 57: Not HerPOV: OdetteThe hallway lights flickered again overhead, the storm still working through the last of the house's wiring, and the edges of my vision had already gone soft and dark at the corners, my lungs pulling nothing useful in no matter how hard I tried, his hand closed around my throat with a weight I couldn't do anything against.I dug my nails into his wrist, not to hurt him, just to hold on to something solid while the rest of the world tunneled down to the sound of my own blood."Nikolai…" I got out, barely, the word scraping. Then Cai screamed. Not the frightened, exhausted crying from the basement. Something sharper, older, a sound I hadn't heard from him before, and I felt Nikolai's grip falter half a second before I saw why, Cai had thrown himself out of Greta's arms and across the hallway, soaked and shaking, and sank his teeth straight into his father's leg.Nikolai's whole body jerked. His hand came off my throat in reflex, and I dropped, catching my
