Amelia's POV

Asher showed up twenty minutes later with two cups of coffee and a brown paper bag that smelled like butterscotch. I love that flavor.

He didn't knock. He just walked in like he had every right to be there, which technically he did. He owned five billion dollars worth of this company. He could probably walk into any office he wanted.

I was still sitting behind my desk, staring at the same email I had read four times without absorbing a single word. The cursor blinked at me.

  • My Ex Fiancé wants be back, but my contract husband owns me   Chapter Hundred and Twenty Three

Asher’s POVThe next morning started different. No sirens. No headlines. No funeral flowers dying on the table. Just coffee. Amelia in my t-shirt making toast. Sun through the kitchen window hitting the floor in stripes. “Morning,” she said, and for the first time in a week she actually sounded like it. “Morning,” I said. I kissed her temple. She smelled like shampoo and coffee. We drove to work together. Not talking about Valerie. Not talking about the will. Not talking about Zurich. For a few hours, we let it be normal. Then we pulled into Sinclair Industries and normal ended. Valerie was everywhere. In the lobby, talking to reception. On the 12th floor, by the elevators, with two assistants trailing her like shadows. In the hall outside my office, laughing with someone from PR. She saw me. Her smile sharpened. “Asher,” she said. “Vice President. How nice to see you.”“Valerie,” I said. “President. Congrats again.”I kept walking. She followed for half a step. “We should

Amelia’s POVI was furious. The kind of furious that sits behind your teeth and makes everything taste metallic. We were in the kitchen. Morning light through the windows. Coffee going cold on the counter. And Asher was acting like nothing had happened. Like his grandmother didn’t just die. Like his family company wasn’t just handed to the woman who probably helped kill her. Like he wasn’t just named Vice President to the President he hates. “Calm down,” he said. Like that would help. “Don’t think about it right now.”“Don’t think about it?” I repeated. My voice was too high. “Asher, that was your company. That was supposed to be yours.”“And it’s not,” he said simply. “So what do you want me to do? Punch a wall? Yell at Valerie? Start a war I can’t win?”“I want you to fight for what’s yours!” He set his mug down. Careful. Too careful. “And what if what’s mine isn’t worth fighting for anymore? What if letting it go is the only way we get peace?”“Peace?” I laughed, and it didn’t

Amelia's POVThe words didn’t land right away. “...bequeath everything to Valerie Hades.”Everything. Not Asher. For a second the room just sat there. Like all of us had to process the sentence twice before it made sense. Then the sound broke. Valerie screamed. Not crying. Not grief. A scream that started in her chest and came out sharp and triumphant. She shot up from her chair and both hands flew to her mouth. “Oh my God,” she said. “Oh my God. Grandma. Thank you.”Damien was already moving. He crossed the room in two steps and pulled her into a hug. His arms went around her like a wall. He didn’t look at anyone else. Just her. His mother. “Valerie,” Lester said, voice shaking. “Baby. Breathe.”Harold stood up so fast his chair scraped back. “That’s impossible,” he said. His voice was low but it cut through everything. “Eleanor would never—”Nora didn’t speak. She just stared at the lawyer with her mouth slightly open, like the words were stuck somewhere between her throat a

  • My Ex Fiancé wants be back, but my contract husband owns me   Chapter Hundred and Twenty

Asher's POVThe drive to the Sinclair Mansion was a blur of wet asphalt and red lights. I drove too fast. Amelia didn’t tell me to slow down. She just reached over and put her hand on my forearm. “You don’t have to be okay right now,” she said quietly. “I’m fine,” I said. And I meant it and I didn’t. I didn’t know how to feel yet. Grief needed a moment to catch up. Right now there was only motion. Only the road. Only getting there. The Sinclair Mansion looked the same as it always did. Big. White. Too many windows. But tonight there were blue and red lights cutting across the driveway. Police cars. An ambulance with its back doors open. My chest tightened. I parked and we got out. The rain was light but cold. It soaked into my shirt in seconds. Amelia stayed close to me. There were officers by the front steps. And standing near the ambulance, clipboard in hand, was Detective Arjun Rao. Dashaun. He saw me and his expression didn’t change. That was how I knew it was bad. The gu

Amelia’s POVThe tea house door shut behind Priya and Dashaun, and the sound was too loud. Rain. That was all I could hear for a second. Rain hitting the awning outside. Then Asher’s breathing next to me. Then my own heart, stupid and fast in my chest. “Wait,” I said, and my voice came out rough. “Wait. We’re not done.”Asher turned to me. “Mel—”“No.” I stood up. My chair scraped against the floor. “I need clarification. On all of it. Because none of this makes sense.”The back door opened again. Dashaun stepped back in. Alone. Priya wasn’t with him. His jacket was damp, water dripping from the hem. He looked at me, then at Asher, and sighed like he’d been expecting this. “You didn’t think we’d let you leave with half a story,” he said. He pulled out the chair Priya had been sitting in and sat back down. “Ask.”I sat too. My hands were shaking. I pressed them flat against the cold wood of the table. “Valerie,” I said. “Start with Valerie. Because none of it yet makes any sense.”

Amelia’s POVThe car didn’t feel like ours on the way home.It felt borrowed. Like we were driving someone else’s life and waiting for them to notice. Asher kept both hands on the wheel. I kept staring at the key in my palm. _Zurich Kantonal Bank. 4419._ Cold metal. It shouldn’t have been warm from my skin, but it was. “Valerie,” I said finally. The name tasted wrong in my mouth. “Your sister is working with Graham?”“I know,” Asher said. “How? How is her name on a safety deposit box in Zurich? How is Graham keeping the key in Grandma’s bible? And why tell me some doors should stay closed?”Asher exhaled. Long. “I don’t know, Mel.”“That’s not an answer.”“It’s the only one I have.” He glanced at me, quick, then back at the road. “Morgan tried to go deeper. He pulled every thread. Corporate records, old trusts, migration files. It all dead-ends. No connection. No Valerie Hades in any system that makes sense. It’s like the name exists for that box and nothing else.”A ghost account.
