Chapter 1

Emil was relatively generous. During the divorce proceedings, he gave me $20 million on top of a car and a house.

I started a modest florist business with the money.

I had just bid farewell to a customer when I received a notification on my phone. It was a text from Emil, whom I hadn't contacted in three years.

"Meet me at the city hall tomorrow at nine o’clock. We’re getting remarried."

The tone of the text was as curt and authoritative as he had always been.

Just from the text alone, I could imagine the facial expression he wore when composing it—the same high and mighty demeanor that held himself above everything else.

I set my phone aside and did not reply to his text.

In the past, I would reply to his texts instantly, but now, even after ten minutes had passed, there was still no reply from me.

In a quite uncharacteristic manner, he double-texted me. "You’re not going to get another chance like this in your life again."

I frowned. He was as arrogant as ever.

Sure, Tara Everson from three years ago may be completely devoted to him.

However, what made him think I would still be as devoted to him after everything he had done? He had publicly cheated on me and fathered children with another woman!

I tapped on his profile and blocked him right then and there.

The next morning, I took my time and leisurely strolled into the city hall at ten o’clock. Just as I stepped onto the stairway, I heard a vexed grumble behind me.

"Tara, what happened to punctuality? I've been waiting for you here for a whole hour!"

It was Emil.

I frowned faintly. I assumed he would understand my absence of reply was effectively a refusal of his offer to get remarried.

I certainly did not expect him to not only show up anyway, but even wait for an hour.

How rare.

In the past, even just a five-minute wait was enough to irritate him to no end. It seemed like he was certain I would come today.

"Alright, let’s go. Quit dilly-dallying."

With that, he walked into the building.

After taking a couple of steps, he realized I did not follow after him. He frowned, making his displeasure known.

"Tara, that's enough! I have graciously waited for you for an hour, so don’t push your luck."

I rolled my eyes at how self-righteous he was acting. "Did I even ask you to wait?"

His face darkened. "What is that supposed to mean?"

I laughed. "What else do you think it means? I never planned to remarry you."

He did not believe me. "You may say that, but what your action says otherwise. Even though you showed up late, you’re still here, aren’t you? Relax. I gave you my word that we would wed again, provided you remember your role."

I rolled my eyes so hard they practically reached the back of my skull. In the few years since we last met, his narcissism had intensified.

I frowned. "Who told you I came here to remarry you? Did it ever cross your mind that I might be here to get a marriage license with someone else?"

"How dare you cheat on me!" Emil grabbed Caprice by her neck and bellowed furiously.Caprice's face was red, and she was being choked.Meanwhile, Emil had been completely blinded by rage. If it wasn’t for the cries of the two children snapping him back to his senses, Caprice would have been strangled to death right then and there."Get out, and take your bastard children with you!"He was seething when he kicked Caprice and the two children out of the house. As soon as Caprice stepped out of the house, the police came to arrest her.Little did she know, I managed to track down surveillance footage of her attempted murder of me. A neighboring shop happened to have a security camera that captured everything. The video clearly showed her hurling the pot at me from the top of the stairs.Aggravated assault. Attempted murder. The court would decide her fate. With no legal guardian left, the children were sent to an orphanage.Meanwhile, Arthur continued his relentless assault o

"You’re right, I’m nothing compared to you." I smiled before fixing a long, provocative look at her.She felt a tinge of panic welling up inside her."Caprice, you were the one who smashed the pot on Emil’s head at the city hall the other day, weren’t you?""A pot? I have no idea what you’re talking about." Her complexion became ashen, and something flickered in her eyes, but she forced herself to remain composed.I scoffed. "Still not going to admit it? It’s fine. I have the security footage of you hitting Emil with it."I waved my phone in her face."That’s impossible! I checked. The cameras were not even working…" She cut herself off mid-sentence.Upon noting the way I smiled coyly at her, she realized she had been tricked."So what if it was me?" She was desperate now.Smack!I slapped her hard across the face. She could say whatever she wanted to me, but I wouldn’t let anyone put my children at risk. She put her hand over her swollen cheeks and stared at me in disbelief

Emil did consider Arthur's influence, but this was several magnitudes greater than he expected. In an instant, Arthur had brought Carson Corporation to its knees.Emil knew this was not the time to try to get revenge. His priority was to return to Carson Corporation to control the situation. With that, he rushed back to the office, only to find things were worse than he thought. Within minutes, the company's stock prices had sunk to their all-time low."Damn it!" He kicked over a chair next to him. This was only the beginning.Carson Corporation’s competitors joined forces with shareholders who had already turned against Emil, working from both sides to undermine his position as CEO.Almost overnight, he found himself besieged with pressure mounting from within the company and beyond it.His life spiraled into chaos. To make matters worse, the bank came to him demanding immediate loan repayments. With orders drying up, the company’s cash flow collapsed. He needed emergency fu

"Haven’t I told you that divorce is only temporary?" Emil clenched his jaw tightly when he spoke.I sneered. "It’s been three years. Your idea of ‘temporary’ sure is a little long, don’t you think?""I know three years is a long time. But still, you can’t just go and marry someone else just because you’re upset at me."Another one of his narcissistic explanations.I could not help but put my palm to my head. Trying to reason with him was futile since he was being so stubborn.I gave him a serious, heavily worded warning again. "Emil, I’ll say this one last time. We’re divorced. I don’t love you anymore. Please leave me alone and keep your distance from me."With that, I ignored him and walked away."I don't believe that! You used to love me so much!" His insistent voice came from behind me."If you don’t believe me, that’s your problem and not mine." I barely even turned to face him as I got into my car and drove away. I believed I had made myself clear enough. To my surprise,

A thunderous bellow rang out, followed by a rush of bodyguards swarming into the room. Leading the charge was a young man.Tall and commanding, he had an authoritative air about him. His presence alone drew awe and attention. The two children, who had been attacking me, immediately scuttled behind Caprice. They shrank into themselves, too afraid to even make a sound.I heaved a sigh of relief upon recognizing him.Thank goodness. He arrived just in time.He was none other than my husband, Arthur Rosenberg, the man at the helm of the Rosenberg Corporation. When his gaze flicked toward me, I had a bad feeling."Hubby!"Despite knowing I was in the wrong, I greeted him warmly with a bright, ingratiating smile. He barely acknowledged me before looking away, as if to say that he would settle the score with me once we got home.Fine. I had to admit I messed up.He had insisted on having someone to accompany me. However, I was uncomfortable with that and decided that I didn’t need

Emil gave them a half-hearted scolding, just enough to placate me. "Cut it out. Aunt Tara is a good person. She'll treat you like her own kids."The color from Caprice’s face drained. She glared at me with venomous hatred.Furious, I retorted, "Emil, when did I ever say I'd be their stepmother?""Tara, I told you. As long as you get rid of the baby, we can go back to the way things were, like nothing ever happened. From now on, just keep your head down and help Caprice take care of the kids. I promise I'll treat you well."I stared at him with a baffled look. I could not even begin to understand how he could say something so shameless with a poker face. Was he trying to remarry me just so he could get a free babysitter for the children he had with Caprice?I snapped. "Emil, have you lost it? Or are you too dense to understand what I just told you?"His face darkened. "Tara, watch your language. You're about to become a mother to two impressionable children."I actually pressed
