Caroline’s POV

Tyrone did not give me time to spiral.

The moment Cerene’s footsteps faded down the corridor, he guided me out of the reception room with a firm hand at the small of my back. He spoke briefly to an aide in a low voice, then led me through a quieter wing of the palace I had not yet seen.

“Where are we going?” I asked.

“Somewhere no one will interrupt us,” he answered. “You’ve had enough of other people’s bitterness for one morning.”

We stepped into a private dining room

Caroline’s POV Two days passed before Caroline returned to the events planning room in the palace. Tyrone had wanted her to stay away longer. He had argued for it in the quiet of their rooms the night after Peter left, his voice low and absolute. She had refused. The wedding and coronation were moving forward on a fixed timeline. Canceling meetings would only feed the rumors already circulating through the staff. More than that, she refused to let Cerene believe she had been driven out. So she went back. The long tables were still covered in sketches and fabric samples. Madame Laurent greeted her with the same polished warmth as before. The assistants moved with careful efficiency. And Cerene was there...standing at the far end of the main table, reviewing a list of floral deliveries with a pen in her hand. Their eyes met. Cerene’s smile was thin and professional. Nothing in her expression acknowledged the earlier confrontation or the fact that their family history now sat

Caroline’s POV The knock came just as Tyrone was about to rise. Three sharp raps, followed by the measured voice of the senior aide. “Your Majesty. Forgive the interruption. There is a man at the outer gate demanding to see Miss Harrington. He claims to be her former husband. Peter Lockwood He refuses to leave.” The name landed like a stone dropped into still water. Caroline felt Tyrone go rigid beneath her. His hand, which had been resting against her back, flattened and stilled. “How did he get this far?” Tyrone asked, voice flat. “He arrived by civilian vehicle and requested an audience. Security detained him at the first checkpoint. He is currently being held in the east reception room under guard. He is… insistent.” Tyrone’s eyes met Caroline’s. The softness of the last hour was gone, replaced by something colder and far more absolute. “Do you want to see him?” The question was quiet, but it carried weight. He was giving her the choice. Caroline sat up fully

Caroline’s POV The gold in the room had nearly gone by the time either of them moved. Tyrone’s arms remained locked around her. Caroline’s head stayed against his chest. The throw had slipped halfway to the floor, but neither of them reached for it. Outside the tall windows the gardens had turned blue with evening. A single lamp near the door threw a low circle of light across the carpet. Caroline shifted only enough to speak. “You’re going to have to let me up eventually.” “Eventually is a flexible word.” His voice was quiet, roughened by the long silence. “I like this version of the schedule better.” She smiled against his shirt. “There is still an evening briefing. You said so yourself.” “I can cancel it.” “You shouldn’t.” “I can do whatever I want in my own house.” He tipped her chin up with two fingers so she had to meet his eyes. “Right now what I want is you right here, not sitting through another hour of protocol while your sister’s words are still sitting in

Caroline’s POV Tyrone kept his word. After lunch he dismissed the remaining staff with a single quiet order and guided me through a private corridor that led directly to his personal apartments. The rooms were larger than I expected...high ceilings, dark wood, tall windows that opened onto a quiet terrace overlooking the inner gardens. Everything smelled faintly of cedar and the clean scent of his cologne. The moment the door closed behind us, the formal weight of the palace seemed to fall away. Tyrone turned the lock with a soft click, then faced me. “Come here.” I walked into his arms without hesitation. He wrapped me up completely, one hand cradling the back of my head, the other firm at my waist. For a long moment he simply held me, his chin resting on top of my hair, his breathing slow and steady against my temple. “You’re still carrying it,” he murmured. “I can feel it in your shoulders.” “I know.” My voice was muffled against his chest. “She got further under my

Sunlight poured through tall windows. A single long table had already been set for two...white linen, polished silver, a low arrangement of white roses and greenery. No staff hovered. The door closed behind us with a soft, deliberate click. Tyrone pulled out my chair himself. “Sit.” I sat. He took the seat beside me rather than across, close enough that his knee brushed mine under the table. He poured water into my glass first, then his own. When a c

Caroline’s POV The rest of the design meeting passed in a careful, brittle silence between Cerene and me. Madame Laurent guided us through sketches of floral arches, table settings, and the massive canopy that would frame both the wedding vows and the coronation. I answered when spoken to. I nodded at the right moments. I even managed to approve a palette of ivory, soft gold, and deep emerald that felt both regal and restrained. But every time Cerene leaned over a board or spoke about “the bride’s vision,” her voice carried a private edge only I could hear. When the formal discussion ended and the team began packing away samples, Madame Laurent excused herself to take a call. The assistants drifted toward the far end of the room. For a few dangerous minutes, Cerene and I were left alone near the long windows overlooking the gardens. She did not waste the opportunity. “You looked very composed just now,” she said quietly, stacking fabric swatches with precise movements. “Al
