POV: Nichole

While I laid there with him.

The two men vanished into the dark as soon as Xavier hit the ground.

The roar of their SUV fading down the road, leaving only the sound of my own ragged breathing and the engine of Xavier's car idling nearby.

I hauled Xavier’s shoulders off the cold ground. His head was heavy and the blood soaked through my fingers, hot and sticky and staining the front of my dress. He did not blink. His skin was the color of mutton fat under the yellow station bulb.

POV: Xavier's MotherThe tea had gone cold in the porcelain cup, but I did not call the maid to change it. I sat in the morning room of the town townhouse, the morning newspapers spread across the mahogany table. On the front page of the city network section, Mira Vance stood in the black mud of the railway yard, her white coat smeared with grease and her face a mask of undignified rage under the flashlights of the police.Foolish girl, I thought. Utterly foolish.Mira’s father had built an empire on the docks through crude intimidation, and it was clear his daughter possessed his same lack of restraint. She had turned a private family matter into a public spectacle and Vance's name was being dragged through the mud on the morning television broadcasts because she could not contain her temper. She was no longer an asset but a liability to our family’s corporate recovery.I looked at the legal brief my secretary had left on the corner of the table and it detailed Nichole's Ex-husban

  • My Ex-husband Billion Dollar Mistakes    Chapter 81- The Confrontation and New Threat

POV: NicholeThe gravel driveway behind the clinic was quiet, but the air felt thin. Elena walked out from the basement cellar door three minutes after us. Her face was smeared with gray dust, and her eyes were red. When she saw Raymond and Beatrice standing by the silver car, she stopped.I looked at her as my hand was still locked in Xavier’s grip. The silver keychain with Mira's private phone number sat in the dirt between us."You called them too," I said as my voice shook and the pain of her choice felt like a physical weight in my heart. "You did not just give the address to Mira but you called Raymond,Elena?"Elena shook her head fast. "No, Nichole. I did not call him, I swear.""Do not lie to her anymore," Xavier said as he stepped forward. His bare feet were dirty from the basement floor, and his breathing was shallow. "You sold us out to protect your uncle’s dock. Did you think Mira would keep your secret?"Raymond took two steps toward me as he ignored Xavier completely

POV: NicholeThe small room in the clinic was cold as Elena stood by the window, her back to me. Her hands were jammed deep into the pockets of her oversized flannel shirt. She had not looked at me for an hour."Elena, you need to eat something," I said as I placed a plastic bowl of cold broth on the bedside table next to Xavier. He was asleep, and his breathing heavy and loud through his nose with the white bandage on his head which was slightly crooked.Elena did not turn around. Her shoulders rose and fell in a quick, jerky motion. "I am not hungry, Nichole." She said, I sat back down on my wooden stool and my lower back ached from the hard seat, with a dull, familiar pressure tightening in my lower abdomen. I put my hand over my flat stomach. I needed to stay calm for the baby, but the silence in the room felt stuffy, like the air before a storm.Elena turned around slowly with her face which was gray under the fluorescent light and there were dark circles under her eyes, her ski

POV: NicholeXavier sat up in the hospital bed and the plastic mattress he laid on made a loud noise under his weight. The white bandage around his head had yellow stains from sweat and his right eye was open and clear now.He held the satellite phone to his ear as I perceived the clinic room smell of boiled soup from the kitchen downstairs."I know about the Baltic shipping papers, Marcus," Xavier said to the caller on the phone with a rough voice. I noticed he was answering and plotting a plan I never knew yet."Your cranes are not moving at the docks.” He said, “Mira’s father changed the city permits and he used a fake report to lock your ships out of the harbor." The man from the other end of the call said.Xavier stopped and listened as his fingers tapped against the metal bed rail. I stood by the window and watched the rain hit the glass while he answered the call.I wanted to tell him to stop talking and rest his brain, but I knew his expression whenever he was plotting a pla

I saw a pair of headlights of another car rounding the bend as I jumped to my feet, and ran into the road, waving my bloody hands into the glare. The yellow car shrieked to a halt and behold, it was a local taxicab."Help me sir please!" I screamed at the wind-shield. "Someone is bleeding here!"The driver, an older man in a wool cap, got out and helped me drag Xavier into the backseat. I climbed in after him, pulling his torso onto my lap as Ipressed my linen coat

  • My Ex-husband Billion Dollar Mistakes    Chapter 77- The Midnight Flight

Pov: NicholeWhen it was time, around 12:53pm.The old floorboards did not creak as I slid my feet into my shoes. I held my breath, watching the blanket over Xavier’s shoulders who was sleeping deeply, his face lined with the exhaustion of the past three days.I sat at the wooden table. By the light of a single dying ember in the stove, I took out a note and wrote on a scrap of wrapping paper.Xavier, I am so sorry for this, but I feel so guilty right now. They froze your accounts because of me and Elena had lost her job because of me. If I stay, Mira will take the rest of what you own. I am going back to the south district. Do not look for me. Let them give you back your company and protect yourself. My hand shook so hard the ink smudged on the final letter, felt like ripping a muscle from the bone. I loved him, but staying meant watching him slowly grow to despise the sight of me as his life rotted away. This was the only decision that would keep him whole.I placed the brass key on
