Chapter 1:The Scum Hands Me Divorce Papers

The hot soup was boiling gently on the kitchen stove, filling the room with the sweet smell of braised beef and spices. I wiped the polished dining table with a damp cloth, set down two crystal wine glasses, and arranged the silverware in a straight line.

Everything was neat. Everything was warm.

Today was our fifth wedding anniversary.

For five long years, I woke up every morning at five thirty to make sure Wilson had fresh coffee and a hot breakfast before he left for the office. I pressed his shirts, washed his laundry by hand, and took all the harsh insults his mother threw at my face whenever she visited.

Nobody knew the truth about me. To the world, I was Phyna, a poor orphan girl who got lucky and trapped the rich Wilson Cross into marriage. But the real truth was simple. I was Phyna Lillard, the only true heir to the greatest financial empire in the country.

Five years ago, Wilson Cross was just a small businessman on the verge of bankruptcy. I fell in love with him, hid my family name, and gave up my billionaire crown just to be his quiet, obedient wife. Whenever his contracts had big legal traps, I stayed awake till midnight correcting every page and slipping them back into his briefcase. Whenever his company ran out of cash, I made anonymous offshore transfers so his credit line never went dry.

I made him a billionaire. All I ever asked for was his true love.

The heavy front door clicked open.

A wave of chilly autumn wind blew through the marble entrance hall, carrying with it a strong trail of unfamiliar expensive rose perfume.

I took off my kitchen apron, smoothed down my simple cotton skirt, and walked out into the living room with a bright, welcoming smile.

"Wilson, you're finally home," I called out softly. "The food is still hot. I made your favorite beef soup to celebrate—"

The words died right in my throat.

Wilson walked under the giant crystal chandelier wearing a tailored black three-piece suit. He looked wealthy, handsome, and proud. But resting against his arm was a woman in a tight red silk gown. Her delicate pale fingers gripped his sleeve, and her big eyes stared at me with pure mockery disguised as pity.

It was Chloe Adams.

The childhood sweetheart who dumped him five years ago when his business was dying. The woman who moved abroad to chase wealthy men, leaving Wilson with an empty bank account and a broken heart.

Now, she was back.

"Wilson?" My voice stayed steady, but my chest felt like someone dropped a block of ice inside it. "Who told her to come into our home?"

Wilson did not look guilty at all. He took off his leather gloves and tossed them carelessly onto the glass coffee table.

"Watch how you speak, Phyna," Wilson said, his voice cold and harsh. "Chloe came back to Capital City this morning. Her heart is fragile, and the weather abroad ruined her health. She needs a calm place to recover, so she will stay right here in the master bedroom starting tonight."

I clenched my fists so hard my nails dug straight into my palms.

"She is staying in our master bedroom?" I repeated, looking straight into his eyes. "Do you even know what date it is today, Wilson? Today is our fifth wedding anniversary."

Wilson let out a loud, mocking laugh that bounced off the tall walls.

"Anniversary?" Wilson sneered, stepping closer with utter disgust written all over his face. "Do you actually think I count the days with an ordinary woman like you? Look at yourself, Phyna. Look in the mirror. You smell like onions and old dishwater. You wear five-dollar clothes from the street market. You have no family name, no rich connections, and not a single dime of dowry. You are just a jobless maid living under my roof for free."

Chloe leaned her head softly onto Wilson’s broad shoulder, pouting her red lips in a fake show of sympathy.

"Oh, Wilson, please don't yell at her," Chloe said, her voice dripping with poison. "It's all my fault. If my heart wasn't sick, I wouldn't have to bother you two. But Phyna, you really must understand. Wilson is an elite billionaire now. He sits with ministers and foreign investors. When he goes to charity galas, he needs an elegant lady on his arm, not someone who only knows how to scrub dirty floorboards."

I took a slow, deep breath and locked my eyes on Chloe. "A mistress who sneaks into another woman’s house has no right to open her mouth."

"Shut your mouth!" Wilson roared.

He jumped forward and grabbed my wrist in a brutal grip, squeezing until my bones ached. His eyes were wide with pure rage.

"How dare you insult Chloe?" Wilson spat, his breath hot against my face. "If I didn't marry you out of pity five years ago, you would be begging on the streets! I gave you a luxury home. I bought you groceries. You contributed absolutely nothing to my success, yet you dare act arrogant in my mansion?"

I looked directly into his eyes without flinching, without showing a single sign of fear.

"Your success?" I whispered, my voice chillingly calm. "Wilson, do you truly believe you built Cross Enterprises into a top corporation all by yourself?"

"Who else?" Wilson sneered with immense pride. "My sharp business brain, my sleepless nights, and my leadership did it all! You just stayed in the kitchen and spent my money. Five years of feeding you was a charity project, Phyna, and my patience is dead."

He let go of my wrist with a hard shove, reached inside his suit coat, and pulled out a thick document.

He threw the papers violently against my chest.

The paper edges cut against my skin, fluttering down and scattering all over the polished marble floor between us.

I looked down.

The title was stamped in heavy black letters: DIVORCE AGREEMENT.

"Sign the papers right now," Wilson commanded coldly. "Don't dream of taking any alimony. You entered this house with one cheap bag, and you will leave with that same cheap bag. You won't get a single house, a single car, or a single penny of Cross family funds. Chloe is the only woman worthy of being my wife."

Chloe stood behind him, taking a slow sip of the expensive red wine I had poured into the glass, flashing me an evil, victorious smirk.

Five years.

Five years of fixing his broken legal clauses late into the night.

Five years of calling top bankers in secret to approve his loans.

Five years of taking his mother’s vicious slaps and endless verbal abuse.

All for an ungrateful man who threw away real gold to pick up cheap brass.

"Wilson," I said, my voice quiet, completely free of any tears. "Are you absolutely certain about this? Once I sign my name and walk through those gates tonight, you and I are total strangers. There is no going back."

Wilson barked out another cruel laugh, crossing his arms over his chest.

"Are you trying to threaten me, Phyna?" he scoffed. "You have no money, no powerful family, and no career. Once you walk out this door, you'll be begging outside my office within three days just to get a piece of dry bread. Sign the papers, or my bodyguards will drag you out through the mud!"

I didn't answer him.

I walked over to the entry table, picked up a heavy black fountain pen, and turned directly to the final signature page.

Without shedding a single tear, without hesitating for even half a second, I signed my name in clean, sharp strokes.

Phyna Lillard.

I tossed the pen right onto the floor. It hit the tip of Wilson's shiny leather shoe with a sharp click.

"Keep your money," I said coldly. "Every dirty dollar of it."

Wilson blinked, his eyes flickering with sudden confusion. He expected me to cry. He expected me to drop to my knees and beg him not to throw me away. But my face was like a stone wall, completely calm and totally cold.

I turned my back on them and walked straight down the hallway into the small guest room where I kept my old belongings. I pulled out my simple black travel bag.

I didn't take any of the designer coats he bought for public events. I didn't touch the small diamond necklace in the drawer. I only packed three pairs of simple everyday clothes, and the heavy platinum signet ring hidden deep inside my old winter coat.

When I stepped back into the grand living room, Chloe was already sitting comfortably on the sofa, leaning back with a glass of wine in her hand.

"Goodbye, Phyna," Chloe mocked with a sweet, fake smile. "Try not to freeze to death out there tonight."

Wilson stood near the front door, a proud smirk returning to his lips.

"Remember what I said, Phyna. Don't come knocking on my door tomorrow morning to beg for food. I will tell the gate guards to release the attack dogs."

I reached out and gripped the cold brass handle of the front door. I paused and looked back over my shoulder.

My lips curved into a cold, dangerous smile.

"Wilson Cross," I said slowly, letting every word cut like a razor. "Enjoy every single cent in your bank account tonight. Because starting tomorrow, you won't even have enough cash to buy yourself a decent meal."

I pulled the door wide open, walked out into the chilly night wind, and slammed the heavy door shut behind me.

The autumn wind whipped through my hair as I walked down the long, private driveway of the Cross estate. The huge black iron gates opened slowly, letting me step out onto the empty main road.

The moment my feet hit the public street, bright white headlights cut through the deep darkness.

Six armor-plated, high-end black Maybachs were parked in a neat, straight row along the curb, their heavy engines purring softly in the silent night.

The door of the center luxury car clicked open at once.

An elderly man with neat white hair, wearing an immaculate gray tuxedo and white silk gloves, stepped out onto the damp pavement. Behind him, twelve tall bodyguards in sharp black suits lined up instantly and bowed their heads at a sharp ninety-degree angle.

Butler Thomas walked up to me with tears in his eyes, carefully took the cheap bag from my hands, and bowed deeply.

"Young Mistress Phyna," Thomas said, his voice loud and clear in the quiet street. "The Master has waited five long years. The Lillard Empire is fully yours to command."

I reached into my pocket, pulled out the heavy platinum signet ring, and slipped it firmly onto my thumb. The cool metal pressed against my skin, bringing back the absolute power that belonged to me from birth.

I looked back up at the brightly lit windows of the Cross villa, my eyes colder than ice.

"Get the car moving, Thomas," I said, stepping into the leather seat of the limousine. "Call the central bank right now. Cancel every single loan Cross Enterprises has with us by sunrise.”
