The message changed everything.

“Now ask Julian why your grandfather was afraid of the Vance family.” I read it twice before lowering my phone.

Julian noticed my expression. “What happened?”

I handed him the phone. He read the message. His face changed immediately.

I looked directly at him.

"You knew," I said.

Julian looked away.

"You knew there was something between Grandfather and the Vance family."

"It wasn't that simple."

"Then make it simple."

My voice was calm, but I could feel anger building inside me. "For years, I believed my family collapsed because of business problems. I believed you and Grandfather did everything you could to protect me. I believed my marriage to Damien was completely separate from all of that."

I stepped closer.

"But now I find out that Grandfather owned Westbridge, that he left instructions for me, and that he specifically mentioned people who knew what happened."

Julian said nothing.

"And now someone is telling me to ask you about the Vance family."

Marcus moved closer. "Julian." My brother finally sighed. "Your grandfather had dealings with the Vance family long before Damien was born."

I frowned. "What kind of dealings?"

"Business."

"That doesn't explain fear."

Julian looked at me. "Because it wasn't only business."

My heart tightened. "What was it?"

He walked toward the old desk in the corner and opened a drawer. From inside, he removed a thin brown envelope. There was no name on it. He placed it on the desk.

"This was never supposed to reach you until you were older."

I stared at the envelope. "You keep saying things like that."

"I know."

"I'm not sixteen anymore, Julian."

"I know."

"Then stop protecting me."

He looked at me for a long moment. Then he pushed the envelope toward me. I opened it. Inside were copies of old contracts. Sterling Global. Vance Holdings. Several other companies I didn't recognize. I scanned the dates. They were from more than twenty years ago.

"What am I looking at?"

"A partnership."

I turned another page.

"The Vances invested in one of Grandfather's shipping operations."

"That doesn't explain anything."

"The investment disappeared."

I looked up. "Disappeared?"

"The company collapsed."

"Was it Grandfather's fault?"

"No."

"Was it the Vances' fault?"

Julian hesitated.

"We never proved that."

I turned to the next page. There were financial statements, transfer records, and handwritten notes. Then I saw a familiar name. Damien's father.

My fingers stopped.

"Mr. Vance was involved?"

"He was."

"How?"

"Your grandfather believed he had moved company funds without authorization."

I looked at Marcus. "And did he?"

"Some money was moved," Marcus said. "But the records were incomplete."

I turned to another page. There was a handwritten sentence across the bottom. “Do not confront the Vances without evidence.” I read it twice.

"Grandfather wrote this?"

Julian nodded.

"Why?"

"Because he believed someone inside Sterling Global was helping them."

My stomach dropped.

"Someone inside our company?"

"Yes."

The room suddenly felt smaller.

I looked around Westbridge.

"How long did this go on?"

"Years."

"And what happened?"

Julian's jaw tightened.

"Your grandfather started investigating."

"He stopped."

"Why?"

Julian looked at me.

"Because he received a warning."

"What warning?"

He pulled another paper from the envelope. It was old and folded several times. He handed it to me. I opened it. There were only a few words.

“Leave the Vance family alone, or the girl will pay for it.” My breath caught.

"The girl?"

Julian nodded.

"You."

I stared at the paper.

I was sixteen then.

I looked at him.

"Someone threatened me?"

"Yes."

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"Because Grandfather believed keeping you away from the matter was the only way to protect you."

I looked down at the warning again. Suddenly, the photograph from the previous night made sense. Me standing beside Grandfather. His hand resting on my shoulder. His expression serious. He had known. He had been afraid. And somehow, my family had hidden all of it from me.

"Did the threat ever stop?"

Julian shook his head.

"Not completely."

"Then why did Grandfather let me live normally?"

"Because he moved the investigation to Westbridge."

I looked around the room.

"So this place wasn't just for protecting assets."

"No."

"It was where he kept evidence."

"Yes."

Marcus reached for another folder.

"There is something else."

He opened it. Inside was a list of names. Some were executives. Some were lawyers. Some were connected to shipping companies. One name stood out. I knew it.

“Clara.”

I stared at it.

"Why is her name here?"

Julian's face became tense.

"She wasn't Clara Vance then."

My eyes moved back to the page.

There was an old photograph attached beside the name.

A younger Clara.

Standing beside Damien's late brother.

I looked at Julian.

"What does she have to do with this?"

"We don't know everything yet."

I turned toward the door.

"Then we find out."

Alexander stepped forward.

"Sophia."

I looked at him.

"You shouldn't go after this alone."

"I won't."

I picked up the files.

"But I'm not walking away either."

My phone vibrated again. Another message.

This time, there was an attachment. I opened it. It was a scanned document. At the top was the Sterling Global seal. At the bottom was my grandfather's signature. But the date made my blood run cold. It was dated three days before his death.

The message beneath it contained only one sentence. “Your grandfather didn't die before finishing the invest

igation.”

I stared at the screen.

Then another message appeared. “He left the final evidence with someone you already know.”

I looked at Julian.

"Who?"

He didn't answer.

I already knew the silence meant the next truth would be worse.

"Who?"The word left my mouth before I could stop it.Julian didn't answer. He looked at the document in my hand, then at the phone on the desk. Marcus was studying him too."Julian," I said. "Who has the evidence?"He rubbed a hand over his jaw."I don't know if we should…""You should." My voice was steady. "You have spent years deciding what I should know and what I shouldn't. That ends today."Julian held my gaze for a moment. Then he said, "Harrison."I went still. An uneasiness settled over me, because Harrison had never once given me a reason to doubt him. "Chief Butler Harrison?"Julian nodded."But why would Grandfather leave it with him?""Because Harrison was one of the few people he trusted completely.""You knew he had something?""I suspected.""Suspected?"Julian exhaled."Your grandfather told Harrison to protect certain documents if anything happened to him. But after Grandfather died, Harrison refused to tell me where they were.""Why?""Because your grandfather gav

The next morning, I woke up before my alarm. For a few seconds, I stared at the ceiling of the guest room in the Sterling residence, trying to remember where I was. Then everything came back. The divorce. Damien signing the papers. The message from the unknown number. The old photograph. Westbridge. And the question I had asked Julian the night before. What did Grandfather do?I sat up slowly. For the first time in years, I wasn't thinking about Damien when I opened my eyes. That alone felt strange. I dressed in a simple cream blouse and black trousers, then tied my hair into a neat low ponytail. I didn't want diamonds or anything that reminded me of the woman everyone had seen at the Commerce Summit. Today, I wanted answers. When I walked into the dining room, Julian was already there. He had a tablet in front of him, his expression serious. Marcus sat across from him, dressed in a dark suit. He was reading through several documents. Alexander was standing near the windows with a cup

"What did Grandfather do?"My question remained between us. Julian stood completely still. The corridor was quiet now. Beyond the tall glass windows, Crestview glittered beneath the night sky, but I could barely see the city anymore. All I could see was that photograph. My grandfather. Julian. And me. A version of myself I could not remember.Marcus broke the silence. "Julian."My brother finally looked at him. "Not here."I turned toward him. "You keep saying that."His eyes met mine. "Because there are things you should hear somewhere safe."I folded my arms. "Then let's go somewhere safe."He didn't argue. We walked toward the private elevator at the end of the corridor. Alexander followed without saying a word. The elevator opened immediately. Inside, the walls were covered in dark wood and brushed gold, with a small screen displaying the Sterling Global crest. Julian pressed his palm against the security panel. The elevator began moving upward.I looked at him. "Where are we goin

I stared at the message until the words began to blur. "You may have escaped the Vance family, Sophia Sterling. But you have no idea what your grandfather left behind." My fingers tightened around the phone. The ballroom was still alive behind me. Music played softly beneath the chandeliers. Waiters moved between tables carrying empty champagne glasses, while reporters gathered around the entrance, waiting for another statement from the woman who had just become the center of Crestview's attention. But none of that mattered anymore.Someone knew about my grandfather. And that was not something the public knew. I turned toward Julian. "Did you tell anyone?"His eyes immediately hardened. "Tell anyone what?"I showed him my phone. He read the message once. Then his expression changed.Marcus stepped closer. "What happened?"Julian handed him the phone. Marcus read it silently. For several seconds, he said nothing. Then he looked at me. "When did you receive this?""Less than a minute ag

  • My Ex-husband Regrets Losing His Hidden Heiress    Chapter 7: The Price of Losing Me

The moment I stepped away from the Vance family, the atmosphere around me changed. People who had ignored me for years were suddenly eager to speak.Executives approached Julian with careful smiles. Investors introduced themselves. Reporters waited behind the velvet barriers, their cameras already raised.I knew what they wanted. They wanted the woman behind the name. They wanted to know why the Sterling heiress had spent three years living as an ordinary wife.I wasn't ready to give them that story. Not tonight.I stopped beside one of the tall windows overlooking Crestview City. The ballroom occupied the hotel's top floor, and through the glass, the city stretched beneath us in a sea of lights. Skyscrapers stood against the dark sky, their windows glowing like scattered stars.Julian came to stand beside me. "You handled that well."I glanced at him. "I wasn't sure I would.""You did."He looked toward the ballroom. "Damien is still watching you."I followed his gaze. He was right.
