ELENA

The pain coursing through my whole body had a rhythm of its own by the time I reached the car....shooting through my abdomen on every step, spreading low into my back until I couldn't tell where one ended and the next began. I pressed one hand hard against my stomach and used the other to find the door handle by feel, because my vision had already started to blur at the edges.

I got the engine started somehow. I don't remember deciding to drive so much as finding myself already moving, the road unspooling ahead of me in a smear of streetlights. Every pothole sent a fresh wave of agony through me, sharp enough that I bit down on my lip to keep from screaming behind the wheel.

Hospital. That was the only thought I could hold onto. Get to the hospital.

I don't know how I made it there conscious. I remember the parking lot swimming in front of me, remember my knees buckling the second my feet hit the pavement.

"Ma'am!"

Two nurses were already running toward me before I understood I'd fallen against the car door.

"She's bleeding....get a wheelchair!"

I looked down. Blood, dark and unmistakable, tracing down the inside of my legs.

"My baby..." The words came out as barely more than breath.

"Don't move. We've got you." A hand caught me before my knees gave out completely.

"I need my baby...."

"Stay with us, Ma'am. Stay with us."

After that, there was only the blur of ceiling lights sliding past overhead, and then nothing at all.

---

Silence woke me before the light did.... a thick, suffocating quiet that told me something before my mind was ready to hear it.

I stared at the ceiling for a long moment before I found the strength to turn my head. Dr. Miller sat beside the bed, a chart open on her lap, and the second she saw my eyes open, she was on her feet.

"Mrs. Bennett."

"Yes." My voice came out flat, unfamiliar even to me.

"How are you feeling?"

"Fine." The word left me on reflex, and it was such an obvious lie that neither of us bothered pretending otherwise.

She pulled her chair closer to the bed. "There are some things we need to discuss."

I already knew. I'd known since the checkup , since the doorway of that bedroom, since the moment Daniel had said the baby is already dead like he was confirming a delivery date. Hearing it confirmed a third time didn't lessen it. If anything, it broke something new.

"The pregnancy couldn't be saved," she said, gently, like gentleness could soften the shape of it. "We performed a procedure to complete the miscarriage. Given how long the pregnancy had already ended before your body caught up to it, there were complications. We've managed those. You're stable."

"Am I...." My throat closed around the question. "Is everything else all right?"

Her hesitation answered before her words did.

"There may be damage that affects your ability to carry a pregnancy in the future and you developed dangerous abdominal lesions. We can't say for certain yet. We'll need to monitor you and run further testing once you've recovered."

"So I might never..." I couldn't finish it.

She didn't try to finish it for me. That silence was answer enough.

I turned my face toward the window so she wouldn't watch me come apart, though I doubt it fooled her. I had wanted children since I was young enough to still believe the world was kind... young enough to spend afternoons bandaging stuffed animals and announcing, with total conviction, that I was going to be a pediatrician. I and my father had dreams of creating one of the biggest child care center in the whole of New York City, I working hand in hand with my father's company.

Daniel had talked me out of medical school before we'd even finished our first year of marriage. Gently, at first....you don't need to work yourself into the ground, I can take care of us he said...until gentle became something closer to erosion, one small surrender at a time, until I woke up one morning and realized I'd traded a medical degree for a role I hadn't consciously chosen: his wife, his housekeeper, his cook, the person who kept his life running so smoothly he never had to think about how.

I had told myself, on the nights I lay awake wondering if I'd made a mistake, that it didn't matter, because he loved me. The flowers. The gifts that arrived for no reason. The way he used to look at me like I was something rare.

None of it had been about me at all. It had been about my father's bank accounts, and later, about making sure I never noticed the years he'd spent building his life on the foundation of two graves with a third grave added he'd paid to dig.

Always follow your dreams, Elena. Do not dim your light for anyone. My father's voice came back to me with a clarity that hurt worse than the ache in my abdomen. He'd said it all the time. I'd wish I listened to him then and now....

I let myself cry for exactly as long as it took to feel the shape of everything I'd lost... my son, possibly any child I might have had after him, eight years of a marriage that had never once been real, and two parents who'd died so that a man could inherit a fortune that was meant to be mine.

Then I wiped my face and made myself stop.

That woman...the one who mistook being needed for being loved, who gave up a medical degree for a man who was already counting her father's assets....was finished. I intended to bury her here, in this hospital bed, and become someone who couldn't be used again.

---

Daniel never came.

Not once in the four days I stayed in that hospital. No calls. No flowers. Not even a message asking whether I'd survived whatever he assumed had happened to me. I found, strangely, that it didn't wound me the way it would have a week earlier. I already knew exactly what I was to him. His silence was just the truth, finally matching his actions.

The day I was discharged, I went straight to the courthouse to file for a divorce.

Then I drove to his office....his car, technically, though I didn't know that yet.... and walked past his assistant without slowing down.

He was mid-meeting when I entered, a half-dozen executives seated around his desk. He looked up, jaw tightening.

"Elena. Can't you see I'm in a meeting?"

I didn't answer. I crossed the room and set the divorce papers in front of him, squarely on top of whatever quarterly report he'd been presenting.

The room went silent. Every eye moved from the papers to me and back again.

"Everyone out," Daniel said, without looking away from me.

The door clicked shut behind the last of them.

He picked up the papers, scanning them with an expression I couldn't read. "What is this supposed to accomplish?"

"I want a divorce."

He actually laughed. "Who gave you the permission?"

"I don't need your permission to stop loving you." I kept my eyes on his. "I stopped the moment I understood what you were."

The laughter faded into something colder. "So that's what this is." He leaned back, unhurried, like he had all the time in the world to dismantle me. "The little dummy finally grew a spine."

It landed exactly where he meant it to. I let it land and didn't give him the satisfaction of showing it.

"Sign it."

"You think you'll survive without me?" He turned the pen over in his fingers, not yet writing. "You've never held a job in your life. You gave up medical school for me. You don't know how to be anyone without my name attached to yours."

"Trust me, I’ll survive and I’ll make sure to pay for everything you did to me."

"You’re nothing, Elena….I have the money silence anyone, nobody will believe anything you say."

"Then I'll build something." My voice didn't waver, and I was almost surprised by that. "Something strong enough to ruin you like you ruined me"

He studied me for a long moment, something between amusement and disbelief, then signed both copies without another word and slid them back across the desk.

"There. You're free." He said it like an insult.

I picked up the papers and turned for the door.

"Elena." I stopped, my hand already on the handle. "One more thing. The car outside…. that's mine. Find another way out of here and out of my life."

I didn't answer him. I walked out, retrieved my two bags from the trunk while he no doubt watched from his window, and stood on the sidewalk with everything I owned in the world reduced to what I could carry in my own two hands.

No husband. No child. No money that wasn't already tied up in accounts with his name on them too. No home, not really ….not one that had ever truly been mine, even before I understood how deliberately it had been built to look that way.

I started walking. I didn't know toward what. I only knew I couldn't go back to a house built on my parents's blood and my son's death.

A few blocks down, a flyer taped to a storefront window caught my eye. I almost walked past it before the words registered.

CAREGIVER NEEDED — LIVE-IN POSITION.

I stopped. Read it again, slower this time, certain I'd misread the number beneath it.

$1,000,000 PER YEAR.

I stood there long enough that a stranger stepped around me on the sidewalk with a muttered apology I barely heard.

One million dollars. For a year of my life… Just enough to start something.

I looked down at the bag in my hand, then back at the flyer, and felt something stir in my chest that I hadn't expected to feel again so soon.

Not grief. Something closer to hope.

Maybe, I thought, reading the phone number at the bottom twice to be sure I had it right, This is where I start again.

  • My Ex-husband Wanted My Money, The Billionaire Wanted Me    CHAPTER 7

ELENA I followed Mrs. Carter down the halls still trying to catch up to what had just happened in that office. Days ago I'd been a wife. Today I got divorced. And somehow, before the day had even ended, I'd agreed to become another man's wife....on paper, at least. Insane didn't begin to cover it.I followed her down a hallway that led to another hallway, past doors that looked like they belonged in a hotel rather than a home. None of it registered the way it should have. My mind was still several steps behind my feet. She stopped in front of a large white door. "Elias's room."Something in my chest tightened at his name. She opened it quietly, and there he was...so small beneath an enormous blanket, lit only by the soft glow of a bedside lamp. Five years old, fast asleep, and looking younger than that in the dark. The pain came without warning. I wasn't looking at Elias anymore. I was looking at a future I'd already started imagining for a child I would never hold. My hand found my

ADRIANThis was stupid.Hiring this woman on the spot had been stupid. Sitting here now, asking a woman I'd known for less than an hour to marry me, was somehow worse. And putting that caregiver notice up in the first place.... Edward had called that particular decision reckless at least a dozen times over the past week, and for once I couldn't argue with him.And yet here I was, about to do exactly what I'd sworn I would never do again.Because I was desperate. Desperate enough that reasoning properly no longer factored into the calculation. Desperate to hear my son's voice again.... any sound at all, a word, a syllable, something. Five years old. He should have been loud by now, exhausting, full of questions I was happy to answer even at the end of a long day. Instead he'd gone quiet somewhere along the way, and every specialist I'd flown in from three different countries had circled the same conclusion without ever quite naming it: He needs something none of us can give him.I kne

ELENA I followed Mr. Blackwood down the hallway, still trying to make sense of what had just happened. You're hired. He said it like it was nothing not that I'm complaining but just like that? He'd simply watched me feed his son a few spoonfuls of vegetables and decided, apparently on the spot, that I was the person he wanted in his house. When we reached his office, he pushed the door open and stood aside just long enough for me to walk through first. The room was enormous....dark wood, floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking grounds I couldn't begin to guess the size of, a desk large enough to seat a small committee. He rounded it and sat. I remained standing until he glanced up."Sit."I lowered myself into the chair across from him, spine straight, hands folded in my lap the way I used to sit across from my father when he was reviewing highschool midterm results. He opened a file already waiting on the desk. "You're twenty-six.""Yes.""You were preparing to study medicine.""Yes."

ELENAI stared at the number on the flyer for a long moment before I finally made myself dial it."Private recruitment services.""Hello. I'm calling about the caregiver position."The woman on the other end moved briskly through her questions.... my age, my experience with children, my educational background, whether I could live in full-time, whether I understood what absolute confidentiality actually meant in practice. I answered every one honestly, though I left out exactly why I had nowhere else to be that evening."If you're available, we'd like you to come in for an interview," she said finally."Today?""Yes. The address is...."I fumbled my phone out and typed it in before she'd even finished the sentence."Seven o'clock.""I'll be there."I hung up and stood there on the sidewalk for a moment, my bags at my feet, feeling something I hadn't let myself feel since walking out of Daniel's office.Hope. Small, unfamiliar, and entirely inconvenient given how little reason I had to

ELENA“WHAT DID YOU DO TO MY BABY?”Daniel went still beside the bed, one hand frozen on the sash of the bathrobe he'd yanked around himself half a second too late. Sofia hadn't even managed that much….she sat against the headboard with the sheet clutched to her chest, her hair falling loose over her shoulders.I should have been screaming. I should have been throwing something, breaking something, giving this moment the violence it deserved.Instead I just stood there, looking between them, waiting for one of them to tell me I was wrong."Elena." Daniel found his voice first. "You need to calm down.""Don't." My own voice came out low, and stranger than I expected. "Don't you dare tell me to calm down.""You're not thinking clearly. It must be the pregnancy…""I heard you." I took a step into the room. "Both of you. I heard every word."That landed. I watched it land … watched the careful concern drain out of his face and something colder take its place.Sofia didn't flinch. She didn
