Mrs. Anita sighed and turned toward the dining table.

“Who's there? Mandy! Adeline!"

A slim girl in her uniform appeared quickly from the kitchen.

“Yes, ma’am?”

“Oh Mandy, you're the one here. Where's Adeline and the rest? Anyway, never mind. Fix me my herb tea and bring it here, be quick.” Mrs. Anita instructed.

“Yes, ma’am,” Mandy said calmly, hurrying off.

Adeline had sneaked out of the dining room into the store before the kitchen, so she wouldn't be seen by Mrs Anita.

By the time Mrs. Anita settled at the table, Mandy returned with a tray and placed the steaming cup gently before her. She bowed slightly before retreating.

Mrs. Anita took a slow sip, her mind drifting to Nathan and Andrea, but she forced herself to stay quiet for the night.

In the bedroom, Andrea stood before the mirror, brushing her long hair in slow, deliberate strokes while Nathan sat heavily on the bed.

“Nathan, I don’t see why you are always complaining about my shopping,” Andrea said, her reflection cool

The nurse hesitated before stepping fully into the room. Her eyes flicked once more to Emily’s sleeping form, then back to Alicia. She lowered her voice. “We need to confirm something with you. You’re listed as her emergency contact, correct?”“Yes,” Alicia said immediately. Her fingers curled against the edge of the chair. “What’s wrong?”“Nothing urgent,” the nurse said carefully. “But when Emily was admitted, there were traces of medication in her system that weren’t listed in her records.”Alicia’s stomach tightened. “Medication?”“Blood pressure stabilizers. Mild sedatives. Nothing dangerous on their own, but combined with stress and dehydration, it could have contributed to her collapse.”Alicia shook her head slowly. “She’s not on any medication. She never mentioned anything like that.”“That’s why we wanted to ask,” the nurse replied. “It’s possible she was prescribed recently or took something without realizing the impact.”The nurse excused herself shortly after.Alicia rema

The hospital lights were too bright.Alicia paced the narrow waiting area outside the doctor’s office, her arms folded tightly against her chest. Her bag rested forgotten on the chair beside her. Every few seconds, she glanced toward the closed door, her heart still racing from the frantic drive over.Emily’s pale face kept flashing in her mind. The way her body had felt limp in her arms. The panic in her own voice as she shouted for help at the emergency entrance.Twenty minutes passed.Maybe thirty.Every minute stretched. Finally, the door opened.A woman in a white coat stepped out, holding a file. Her expression was calm but serious.“Miss Alicia?” she asked.Alicia moved toward her immediately. “Yes. How is she? Is Emily okay?”“Please, come inside,” the doctor said gently.Alicia followed her into the office and sat across from the desk, gripping her fingers together to keep them steady. The doctor glanced at the file. “Before I explain, I need to ask. Has Emily been under any

Nathan arrived home later than usual. He dropped his keys on the console table and loosened his tie, the weight of the day still clinging to him. The house was quiet, the kind that made every thought louder. His mother had already retired upstairs. He poured himself a drink and settled on the couch, his mind drifting back to the audit, the missing reports, the tightening pressure around the company. An hour later, the front door opened.Footsteps crossed the marble floor.Andrea.Nathan didn’t look up.She paused when she saw him on the couch. “You’re home early,” she said lightly.Silence.Andrea moved closer, setting her bag aside. “Nathan?”He shifted slightly, eyes fixed on the glass in his hand.“I tried calling earlier,” she added.Still nothing. The tension stretched.Andrea sat beside him, angling her body toward his. “You’ve barely spoken to me since everything happened.”His jaw tightened. He had no desire to revisit that conversation. Or the choice she had made without him

Nathan instructed that a board meeting should be announced to be held immediately after the lunch break. The office cafeteria hummed with lunchtime chatter. The scent of warm meals lingered in the air as staff filtered in and out, laughing, complaining, and exchanging casual stories that had nothing to do with deadlines or balance sheets. The accountant dropped his tray onto the table across from Jack with a tired sigh.“Man… today has been something else,” he muttered, loosening his tie slightly.Jack looked up from his phone. “Already stressed and it’s barely noon?”The accountant shook his head and picked up his fork. “You have no idea.”Jack took a sip of his drink. “What happened?”The accountant leaned in slightly, lowering his voice out of habit. “The boss came down personally this morning. Some purchase records are missing again.”Jack froze for half a second.Again? He masked it quickly by reaching for his food. “Missing how?”“The files for the last building materials delive

Monday morning came earlier than Alicia expected.Sunlight filtered through the curtains, nudging her awake before her alarm could. For a brief second, she lay still, staring at the ceiling, letting the weight of the day settle on her chest. Her first official workday at Marie Whiston Company. She sprang out of bed almost immediately.“Okay… no lateness today,” she muttered as she hurried through her routine. She dressed quickly, packed her bag, left Emily a note since she was still asleep, then ordered a cab back to her own apartment. She needed her laptop, her project files, and the quiet space to mentally prepare. There were schedules to review, documents to organize, and a new work rhythm to settle into.By the time she arrived at the office, the building was already alive with movement. Phones rang, keyboards clicked, voices floated across open spaces.Alicia settled behind her desk and opened her laptop.“Let’s do this,” she whispered to herself.Spreadsheets filled her screen. P

Dylan insisted on driving Alicia back to Emily’s place.“But you need to find your way home. I can get a ride from here,” Alicia said as they stepped out of the restaurant.“It’s already late,” he said, easing the car onto the road. “And since you’re staying with Emily to take care of her, I might as well use the chance to see her too. I haven’t checked on her since you told me she wasn’t feeling well.”Alicia smiled faintly. “Okay, that’s fine. Emily will be glad to see you. She’s been restless staying indoors.”The city lights streamed past the windows as they drove, the hum of the engine filling the brief silence between them. The weight of their earlier conversation lingered, but it had softened into something more comfortable, more careful.Alicia rested her head lightly against the seat, letting her thoughts drift. They had gone almost half a mile when her eyes suddenly sharpened. Her gaze snapped toward the sidewalk ahead, and her breath caught in her chest. They were approachin
