~•~ I stared down at her, waiting for an explanation, waiting for her to tell me that she was drunk and didn’t know what she was doing, anything that could at least put me at ease, but she didn’t. Instead, she looked up at me and said, “This is fake, Alex.” “Fake?” I laughed. “That’s your explanation, that it’s fake?” “Look,” she seemed less angry than she was just a few minutes ago. “I know how it looks. I understand you’re angry at me because you believe I’ve cheated on you, but I didn’t. I did meet him that day, but it was only for dinner and the director as well as all our assistants were present. I didn’t kiss him. I was never even alone with him.” My tongue poked the inside of my cheek. Her words didn’t even make sense. “So everything is true except for the part that makes you look bad?” “You’re not hearing me, Alex!” “Oh, I am. And all I’m hearing is your lack of accountability, Charlotte. There’s tangible proof in front of you and you’re still denying it?” I shook my head in disappointment. “I didn’t expect this from you.” A tear rolled down her cheek, landing on her shirt, then another. Before I knew it, she was crying. “Someone is trying to slander me, Alex. This is not true, I promise.” I turned away from her. She knew her tears were my weakness and she knew how to use them to her advantage. “Why don’t you scroll and see the rest of the pictures then?” If it were just a kiss, I wouldn’t be this angry. I could have easily dismissed it. I could have pretended it never happened as long as she promised to stay away from him. I would never have brought it up, either, but it was much more than that. There were more pictures of them entering a hotel, both of them in a hotel room. Both of them getting undressed, not knowing they were being watched. At first, I’d dismissed the pictures as AI-generated pictures but they were way too detailed not to be true. The piercing on her back. The tattoos on the side of her waist and the side of her breasts. AI couldn’t be this thorough. “Please, Alex. I don’t know how these came about but I am certain it’s not me! I didn’t even drink! If I had slept with him, I would have remembered!” I turned back around to face her, but before I could say anything, her phone started ringing. She ignored it at first. “Aren’t you going to take that?” She wiped her tears with the back of her hand and brought out her phone from her pocket. My eyes went straight to the screen. A chuckle slipped past my lips when I saw who was calling. Talk about incredible timing. “Answer it.” She stared at me for a few seconds, no doubt contemplating whether to listen or not. When she realized it wasn’t worth fighting me over, she answered the call and put it on speaker. “H-hello?” She cleared her throat. “What’s up?” “Are you good? Your voice sounds different.” I rolled my eyes. He knew her voice enough to know when there was a change. Charlotte faked a laugh. “That’s what happens when I spend three months constantly singing.” Dave Brown laughed loudly even though it wasn’t that funny. “You singers are incredible.” My tongue poked the inside of my cheek, irritated by the unnecessary compliment. She avoided my eyes, uncomfortable as well. “Did you call for a reason?” “Oh yeah! I wanted to check if the news has been delivered to you? We’re the official cast.” “Oh,” she glanced at me. “I haven’t heard yet. Thanks for telling me.” “I guess the director saw our chemistry.” He chuckled. She cleared her throat again, knowing the call was doing nothing to help her case. “I’m busy right now. How about I call you later?” “Alright then. See you soon.” She hung up after that and looked at me. “I know that sounded sketchy…” I scoffed and walked away from her, walking further into the closet to find the shirt I originally came for. I took the first shirt I saw off its hanger and put it on. “Come on, Alex. Do you really believe I’ll cheat on you?” She followed me as I walked out of the closet. “I don’t know what to believe anymore, Charlotte.” “How about you start by believing your wife?” I didn’t respond because I didn’t know how to. How could I believe her when every piece of evidence was pointing towards cheating? How could I just take her world for it like a fool? Before those photos, I never would have believed she would cheat on me, but I didn’t know anymore. I’d acquired those photos at a very high price just because I didn’t want her reputation to be ruined. I had given her enough grace by not letting the paparazzi post them. I’d paid a lot to suppress the news. I knew she was just getting into acting. I didn’t want to ruin that for her, but she still found it hard to tell me the truth. I turned around to face her once more. She stopped walking before she could run into me. “Tell me something, Charlotte. Are you going to take that gig?” “What?” “Are you going to go through with it? Are you going to act with him?” She bit down on her bottom lip, staying quiet. Her silence was all I needed. “Of course,” I nodded. “Alex,” she teared up again. I shook my head, not wanting to hear any more. “Either you let go of the gig or we get divorced.”CHARLOTTE~•~I didn’t realize how serious Alexander was until I woke up the next morning to him arguing with someone from his office over the phone while making pancakes and eggs. His signature breakfast.“No,” he said flatly as he cracked another egg into the bowl. “Move the meeting.”There was a pause from the other side.“I don’t care if they flew in from Zurich.”Then another pause.“I’m in Los Angeles with my family. Figure it out.”My stomach flipped stupidly at the last part. I mean, I did know he was serious, but seeing him in action was quite hot.Nyla, on the other hand, sat on the kitchen counter swinging her legs while decorating a pancake with whipped cream. “Daddy,” she called out, bringing his attention to her. “Mommy says too much sugar is bad for me.”Alexander lowered his voice. “Your mommy eats just as much sugar.”“No, I don’t,” I defended as I walked into the kitchen. Both of them turned to look at me at the same time. Alexander’s gaze softened instantly as if me
CHARLOTTE~•~“If you had gone one more time without answering my calls, I would have taken the next flight to LA.” Lucy hissed as I answered her call and brought my phone to my ear.I winced. “Sorry. Everyone is trying to reach me at the same time.” I explained.“So? It only means you prioritize me.”“I did. I put my phone on DND and put you on favorites.”“Is that supposed to make me feel special?”“Not at all,” I said but couldn’t stop my laugh. “But I’ll make it up to you later.”She sighed audibly. “Whatever. I was calling to check up on you. I didn’t know Vanessa was behind all that.” Her tone was accusatory.Right. I hadn’t told her about that. I didn’t blame her if she was mad at me for keeping things from her. “I’m sorry.”“You’ve replaced me with Alexander, haven’t you?”I instinctively looked at the door of my room. I’d waited for him to leave before I answered her call because I also wanted to talk about him and even if the call wasn’t on speaker, I didn’t want him to over
CHARLOTTE~•~Barely twenty-four hours after my lawyer filed a suit against Vanessa, my phone started buzzing nonstop.Vivian, my publicist, didn’t make my manager reveal the lawsuit, but she made sure to tip a known blogger about it and after they saw the filed case with evidence against her, the internet went crazy. That also meant everyone was calling me at once.I never told Lucy about suing Vanessa so I wasn’t surprised that she was among the hundreds of people trying to reach me at once. Even Dave was trying to get to me, making me wonder what he wanted to say. Was he going to plead for his fuck buddy? He sent a few messages but I didn’t bother checking them.Since everyone was trying to reach me at once and they couldn’t, they started trying to get to me through Alexander, then his team. I did not doubt that one had to do with Vanessa’s legal team. They were grasping for straws at this point. They most likely wanted to end the case before it probably began but I wasn’t going to
CHARLOTTE~•~“You have such a dirty mouth during sex.”Alexander chuckled, the sound vibrating through my body. “Did you wake up this morning thinking about sex with me?” He questioned, placing a kiss on my shoulder.“Considering I can feel you poking my leg, that isn’t so absurd, is it?”He adjusted, shifting his crotch away from my body, still keeping his arms wrapped around me. “Sorry. Morning wood.” He said. “It also doesn’t help that you’re incredibly sexy every second of the day.”That brought heat to my cheeks. I couldn’t fall for his seduction, not when Nyla’s favorite part of the day was waking me up. “You can go back to your room now.”Alexander groaned. “I thought this was our room now.”“You thought wrong, babe.”“Couples usually sleep together.” He pointed.“Good thing we aren’t a couple. We’re coparenting.”“Yeah?” I could hear the smugness in his voice before he even asked the question. “How come you didn’t say anything when I called you my wife last night?”Heat crawl
CHARLOTTE~•~The limo was waiting by the time we got outside. The driver opened the door and I got in before Alexander. I slid across the seat eagerly. The kiss we shared on the balcony was innocent, but I could feel the tension between us as we quickly exited the party.Alexander climbed in after me. The moment the door closed, we were in a world of our own. He didn’t even wait for the car to start moving. He reached for me, pulling me across the seat until I was straddling his lap.Our mouths met in a hungry kiss. This one wasn’t soft or reassuring like the one on the balcony. It was deep, urgent, and full of everything we’d been holding back all night. His hands gripped my hips, sliding up my thighs under the hem of my skirt.“Fuck, Charlotte,” he groaned against my lips. “You have no idea what you do to me.”I smiled into the kiss, my fingers threading through his hair. “I think I have some idea.”His tongue swept into my mouth as the limo started moving. But all I could focus o
CHARLOTTE~•~“So are we going to talk about what happened in there or are we going to wait until we get home?”We’d just arrived at the after-party that was being thrown by a musician I really respected. I didn’t want to go. My mood had already been ruined, but not attending would make me seem like a snob and I was still smoothing over my reputation so I had no choice.I couldn’t wait to go back to New York and continue living like a hermit for the rest of the year.“How about we greet a few people first?” I offered. “We can stay for thirty minutes then leave or talk. Your choice.”Alexander stared down at me. “I know you didn’t do anything with him,” he clarified. “I saw Vanessa leave so all three of you were there together. I’m just curious and well, concerned.”I didn’t for a second think he suspected of… fooling around with Dave. I just didn’t know how to bring up the topic. Alexander had basically implied that Dave abandoned me back then because of what I’d been going through. I
ALEXANDER~•~Too many people were trying to reach out to me at the same time and it all had the same message.“Your ex-wife hid your daughter from you?”It painted Charlotte in a bad light and it made me feel a bit guilty, just not enough to drop the case. It wasn’t like she was willing to hear me
CHARLOTTE~•~I would strangle Alexander if it wouldn’t land me in jail.Alexander’s petition didn’t feel real, not when I first got the papers while I was with Dave, not even when I confronted him in front of his penthouse. It wasn't until the first court hearing, when the judge questioned Nyla’s
ALEXANDER~•~This was ridiculous.I wasn’t sure how the conversation went from me accusing her of cheating to her accusing me of faking the evidence. She knew there was no way to lie her way out of it so she was trying to flip it around on me? Utterly ridiculous.I chuckled, but the sound came out
CHARLOTTE~•~My mouth parted, but no words came out.I couldn’t believe what Alexander was asking of me. I’d been trying hard to get into acting. I finally got the opportunity to work with one of the most talented directors and he wanted me to turn it down.I understood that he was mad and a littl
