Third Person POV

Lane sat alone in his office, his fingers tapping furiously against the keyboard. In the otherwise silent room, the sound seemed unusually loud.

The laptop’s glow illuminated his face. Piles of documents were scattered across his desk, and beside them lay his phone, which had been ringing almost continuously for the past thirty-five minutes.

Lena.

She had been calling him repeatedly.

She was probably wondering why he was still at the office so late. Or perhaps she was preparing

I turned so quickly that my neck nearly hurt.Lena stood at the far end of Hugh's living room, leaning against the wall with her arms folded across her chest. She looked completely at ease, as though she hadn't just appeared in a house where she had no right to be.For several seconds, I could only stare. How had she gotten inside? I had entered the house alone. I was certain of that."How did you get in here?" I demanded. My voice was sharper than I intended, but I didn't care. I was too frightened to pretend otherwise.Lena sighed, pushed herself off the wall, and walked towards me."Must you always look as though you're about to faint whenever you see me?""You're in someone's house without permission! What do you expect me to do? Welcome you with a cup of tea?""That wouldn't be a bad idea. I'm famished from having to watch your every move."I shivered as I stared at her. I couldn’t believe my ears. Was she serious? Before I could respond, she reached the armchair opposite mine an

The moment Hugh returned with the ice cream, I snapped out of my thoughts so abruptly that I nearly jumped in my seat.“Here you go, baby girl.”He held out the cone with a smile, completely unaware of the storm raging inside my head.I forced a smile and reached for the ice cream.Hugh's eyes lingered on my face, and for a moment, I thought he had noticed something was wrong. I quickly took the cone, hoping the movement would distract him from studying me.“What’s wrong?” Hugh asked.I forced a laugh, trying to make it sound natural. “Maybe I'm wondering why you took so long.”“There was quite a queue.”I licked my ice cream, keeping my gaze on the people moving around us. I hated that I was suddenly afraid. I hated that even in a place as peaceful as this, I couldn't relax. But I smiled.I smiled and licked my ice cream whenever Hugh made another joke. For once, I was grateful that he didn't seem to notice my fake smile. Or perhaps he did and chose not to question it.Either way, I

I pressed my lips together and stared out the car window, replaying my earlier conversation with Hugh.He had made it clear that he wanted more than a relationship built around our unborn child. He wanted me to acknowledge the feelings between us and give him a chance to prove that whatever we had was worth exploring. The most frustrating part was that I couldn't honestly say I felt nothing for him.I liked his company. I liked how he took care of Noelle, always noticed when something was wrong with me, and made me feel safe without even trying. Sometimes, I found myself looking forward to seeing him whenever he left the house. Other times, I wanted him to stay close, even when neither of us had anything to say.But liking someone and allowing yourself to fall in love with them were two completely different things.I had a daughter to think about. I was pregnant, and my life had become increasingly complicated over the past few weeks. I didn’t want regrets.I rubbed my forehead.Maybe

The car ride home was painfully quiet.I sat in the passenger seat, staring out the window while Hugh concentrated on driving. We hadn't said much since leaving Noelle's school.I turned slightly to look at him. His expression was difficult to read, and his hands gripped the steering wheel tightly. I wanted to say something, but I didn't know how to start a conversation without making things worse. So I remained silent. Then, almost without thinking, I reached out and touched his hand.Hugh glanced at me. For a few seconds, our eyes met, and I wondered whether I had made a mistake. He gave me a smile that didn't quite reach his eyes."Is everything okay?" I asked softly."Of course."I didn't believe him, but I didn't push.He took a breath, then turned his attention back to the road."I want to introduce you to my parents."I blinked, unable to respond at first. My mouth opened, but no words came out. I closed it again, trying to process what I had just heard."Your parents?" I final

For a moment, the three of us stared at one another. Lane stood by the school gate, wearing an expression so unreadable that I wondered what could be wrong this early in the morning.Hugh moved before I could say anything. He stepped in front of me, placing himself between Lane and me as though he thought Lane might attack me at any moment. My heart gave a little squeeze. I liked his protectiveness, but two men glaring at each other in front of Noelle's school were the last thing I needed.Lane's face suddenly broke into a smile, so unexpected that Hugh and I exchanged surprised looks."Well, isn't this interesting?" Lane said. "You never told me you changed Noelle's school."I crossed my arms."Why does it matter to you?"His smile faded slightly."Why wouldn't it matter? She's my daughter, Zoe. I should know these things."I let out an incredulous laugh."You should know these things?! You've never asked about her. You barely ask how she's doing, and now you suddenly want to know wh

The first thing I did when I woke up that morning was stare at the ceiling and remind myself that I couldn't afford to fall apart. My daughter needed her mother, and lately, I felt like I was letting her down.Hugh and Harper handled everything. They helped Noelle with her schoolwork, made sure she ate properly, and took care of her needs while I spent most of my time trying to understand what was happening to me.As grateful as I was for their help, I couldn't ignore the growing guilt in my chest.I was her mother. I was supposed to make sure she had everything she needed. I was supposed to check her schoolwork, prepare her for the day, and make sure she felt loved and cared for. Instead, I had gradually allowed Hugh and Harper to take over responsibilities that should have been mine.I threw off the covers and got out of bed. After getting ready, I went straight to Noelle's room. She was still sleeping peacefully, curled beneath her blanket with one hand tucked under her cheek."Swe
