Chapter 5

The heavy mahogany doors swung open.

And my entire body locked.

He was standing near the floor-to-ceiling windows, turning as I stepped inside. Two years later, and he still looked exactly like the man from that night — only colder, sharper, and far more powerful. The same rare grey eyes. The same controlled presence. The same face I had tried so hard to forget.

My heart slammed against my ribs so hard it hurt.

For a moment I couldn’t move. Couldn’t breathe. Every memory I had buried came rushing back at once — the heat of his hands on my skin, the low sound of his voice telling me to breathe, the way he had held me like I wasn’t broken. The way he had disappeared before morning without leaving a single trace. And now he was standing in front of me as the CEO of Apex Global, looking at me like he was confirming something he already knew.

The HR Director’s voice sounded distant as she introduced us. Then she left, and the door clicked shut behind her with a soft finality that made my stomach tighten.

Silence filled the large office.

He walked to his desk without rushing, every movement calm and deliberate. He sat down, opened a folder, and began reviewing what I assumed was my resume. His expression stayed professional, almost cold. But every time he looked up, those grey eyes lingered on my face a second too long. Long enough to make the air feel thinner. Long enough to make my pulse stumble. Long enough for the carefully built walls inside me to start cracking under the weight of recognition.

I forced myself to stay still. My palms were damp against my sides. My throat felt tight. Two years of carefully rebuilding my life suddenly felt fragile under that stare. I had walked into this building believing I was ready for anything. I had prepared for judgment, for pressure, for high expectations. I had practiced my answers and straightened my shoulders and told myself the past could no longer touch me.

I had not prepared for him.

“Your experience is solid,” he said finally. His voice was the same deep, low tone I still sometimes heard in my dreams. “Impressive trajectory.”

“Thank you,” I managed. My voice came out steadier than I expected, but it still felt thin in the large room.

He closed the folder and stood. Walking around the desk, he stopped in front of me — close enough that I could smell his cologne, close enough that the air between us felt charged. He leaned forward slightly to sign the papers on the mahogany desk beside me. His shoulder almost brushed mine. The near-contact sent a shock of awareness through me that I hated myself for feeling. My body still remembered him, even when my mind wanted to forget. Even when forgetting had been the only way I knew how to survive.

Then, almost casually, he said:

“Your face looks familiar.”

My stomach dropped so hard it felt like falling.

Before I could force out a response, my phone lit up on the desk.

The lockscreen glowed between us.

A photo of my twins filled the screen — my daughter and son laughing, their faces bright under the soft light of our living room. For one dangerous second, I didn’t move. It was just my phone. Just my children. Just the life I had built alone after everything fell apart. The only pure thing I had left. The only thing that had kept me standing when the rest of my world collapsed.

Then I saw his eyes drop to the screen.

And stay there.

The change in him was small but unmistakable. His posture went completely still. His gaze sharpened with a focus so intense it made the back of my neck prickle. He wasn’t looking at two random children anymore.

He was looking at their eyes.

The same rare, striking grey eyes that were staring back at him right now.

A cold wave washed over me. My breath caught in my throat. Every protective instinct in my body screamed at once. I wanted to snatch the phone away. I wanted to step between him and the photo. I wanted to undo the last few seconds before everything changed. Panic and something sharper twisted together in my chest.

Shit.

I moved before I could think.

I reached out, picked up the phone from the mahogany desk, and slipped it quickly into my bag. My hands were trembling slightly, but I forced them to steady. I could still feel the weight of his stare on me, heavy and unblinking, like he was still seeing the photo even after it disappeared from view.

He straightened slowly. When he spoke, his voice was calm, controlled, and completely unreadable.

“You will hear from my assistant regarding the offer.”

I nodded once, unable to trust my voice, and turned toward the door. My legs felt unsteady. All I wanted was to get out of that office before everything collapsed completely. Before he asked a question I wasn’t ready to answer. Before the truth sitting between us became impossible to ignore. Before the life I had built so carefully started to crack open in front of him.

I reached for the handle.

The door suddenly swung open from the other side.

I walked straight into a solid chest.

Strong hands caught my arms to steady me. I looked up, ready to apologize—

And froze.

Kofi stood in front of me.

The man I almost married. The man who had stood at the altar while I said no. The man who had built a secret life with my sister and still walked away like I was the one who had ruined everything. The man whose betrayal had pushed me into that hotel bar two years ago in the first place.

For a moment, none of us moved.

I stood trapped in the doorway, caught between the two men — the stranger from that night behind me, and the man who had once destroyed me blocking the only way out.

My heart dropped so hard it felt like the floor had disappeared beneath me.

What the actual hell.

I barely made it three steps out of Rami’s office before a hand closed around my arm.“Zara.”Kofi’s voice stopped me cold. I turned slowly. He looked the same and completely different at the same time — still handsome, still polished, but there was something uneasy in his eyes now. The kind of look that said he wasn’t prepared to see me here, of all places.“What the hell are you doing here?” I asked, pulling my arm free.He glanced past me toward Rami’s office door, then back at my face. “I could ask you the same thing. You work here?”“That’s none of your business.”He stepped closer, lowering his voice. “Your mum told Zola you have kids now… is that true?”I froze.“Don’t,” I cut him off. My voice came out sharper than I expected. “Don’t you dare talk about my children.”Kofi’s expression shifted into confusion mixed with something that looked almost like hurt. “Zara, I’m just asking. Are they—?”“They are none of your concern,” I snapped. “You lost the right to ask me anything th

Chapter 3I was on my third glass of scotch when I felt someone watching me.The hotel bar was dim and expensive, the kind of place where people spoke in low voices and the lights never fully chased away the shadows. I sat alone at the far end of the counter, still wearing the soft dress I had changed into after walking out of my own wedding. My makeup was gone. My hair was loose. The sting on my cheek had faded into a dull ache, but the emptiness in my chest had only grown heavier.I felt hollow.Like someone had reached inside me and taken everything that used to matter. The man I loved. The sister I trusted. The future I had planned so carefully. All of it was gone, and the silence it left behind was louder than any scream.I didn't want comfort. I didn't want pity. I just wanted to stop feeling so powerless. That was when I looked up and met his eyes.He was sitting a few seats away, dressed in a dark bespoke suit that fit him too perfectly—broad shoulders. Calm posture. The kind

Chapter 2I looked at Kofi.Really looked at him.For three years I had loved this man. I had planned a future with him. I had held on even when things started to change. At first it was small — he stopped calling as often, then he started coming home later. I would wait up for him with dinner, only for him to say he had already eaten. I told myself he was tired. I told myself work was stressful. When he stopped reaching for me at night, I blamed myself. Maybe I wasn't trying hard enough. Maybe I needed to be more patient. More understanding. Quieter. There were nights I sat on the edge of the bed after he turned away from me, staring at the wall, telling myself not to cry. There were mornings I looked at him across the breakfast table and felt the distance between us like a physical thing. I still smiled. I still asked about his day. I still made excuses for him because I loved him. I kept believing that once we got married, the man I fell in love with would come back. Now I knew the
