Chapter 2

I looked at Kofi.

Really looked at him.

For three years I had loved this man. I had planned a future with him. I had held on even when things started to change. At first it was small — he stopped calling as often, then he started coming home later. I would wait up for him with dinner, only for him to say he had already eaten. I told myself he was tired. I told myself work was stressful. When he stopped reaching for me at night, I blamed myself. Maybe I wasn't trying hard enough. Maybe I needed to be more patient. More understanding. Quieter.

There were nights I sat on the edge of the bed after he turned away from me, staring at the wall, telling myself not to cry. There were mornings I looked at him across the breakfast table and felt the distance between us like a physical thing. I still smiled. I still asked about his day. I still made excuses for him because I loved him. I kept believing that once we got married, the man I fell in love with would come back.

Now I knew the truth.

"You have a child with my sister," I said. My voice was steady, but every word felt heavy in my mouth. "Her name is Lulu. She's two years old."

The hall went completely silent.

Kofi's face changed. The warm, confident smile he had worn during his vows disappeared. For a second he looked shocked, like he couldn't believe I was saying this in front of everyone. Then his expression tightened, and I saw something colder settle behind his eyes.

"Zara… let's not do this here," he said in a low voice. "We can talk privately."

Zola stepped forward quickly, already crying. Tears ran down her face as she clutched her chest like she was the one who had been hurt. Her voice was loud enough for the guests closest to us to hear.

"Zara, please," she sobbed. "Why are you doing this? You're embarrassing everyone. Despite everything, I still let him marry you. You're just being overdramatic. You couldn't even give him a child and now you're trying to destroy him?"

Her words hit me harder than I expected.

I stared at her. My own sister. Standing there crying in front of all these people, trying to make me look like the villain. Trying to turn the sympathy of the room against me. The same sister I had protected growing up. The same sister I had defended more times than I could count.

Before I could answer, I heard familiar footsteps.

My father and stepmother pushed through the crowd. For one brief, stupid moment, a small hope rose in my chest. Maybe they would defend me. Maybe they would finally see what had been done to me. Maybe someone in my family would stand on my side.

Instead, my stepmother's face was full of anger — and it was directed at me.

"How could you do this?" she said loudly, so everyone around us could hear. "On your wedding day? Are you trying to destroy this family's reputation?"

My father stood beside her, looking disappointed. Not at Kofi. Not at Zola. At me.

"Zara, this is not the place," he said firmly. "You're making a scene. Stop this right now."

I couldn't believe what I was hearing.

"They betrayed me," I said, my voice rising. "He has a child with my sister and you're blaming me?"

My stepmother stepped closer. Her eyes were cold and sharp.

"You're always so emotional. Always causing problems. Couldn't you just keep quiet for once? Do you ever think about anyone but yourself?"

She didn't just slap me.

She grabbed the front of my wedding gown, yanked me forward, and struck me across the face so hard the sound echoed through the entire hall. My head snapped to the side. My ear rang. For a second the room blurred, and I tasted blood where my teeth had cut the inside of my cheek.

The shock of it froze me in place.

I looked at Kofi, waiting for him to say something. Waiting for him to step forward. Waiting for him to defend me the way a man who just promised to love and protect me should.

He just stood there.

Silent.

The man who had looked into my eyes and spoken beautiful vows less than ten minutes ago didn't move a single step. He didn't even look angry on my behalf. He just watched, as if this was somehow still my fault.

Something inside me went quiet.

The pain in my chest didn't disappear, but it changed. It became colder. Sharper. Clearer. The part of me that still wanted to be soft, that still wanted someone to choose me, finally went still.

I turned slowly to face my stepmother. My cheek was burning and the metallic taste of blood was still in my mouth, but I no longer felt like crying. I stepped closer to her until we were almost face to face. My voice came out low and clear, loud enough for the people closest to us to hear.

"Does Dad know that she is not his daughter?"

My stepmother's eyes widened. The color drained slightly from her face.

I didn't stop.

"Does he know you slept with his best friend?"

The silence that followed was heavier than anything else that had happened that day. My father's face went pale. Zola stopped crying mid-sob. Kofi looked stunned. My stepmother stood frozen, her hand still slightly raised.

I looked at all of them — my father, my stepmother, my sister, and the man I was supposed to marry.

"You all played me for a fool," I said. My voice didn't shake. "But you will regret it."

Then I turned around.

I picked up the front of my wedding gown so it wouldn't drag on the floor, and I walked down the aisle the same way I had come in. Guests stared. Some whispered. A few looked shocked. No one stopped me.

I didn't look back.

Not at Kofi. Not at Zola. Not at the family that had just chosen their reputation over me.

I walked out of my own wedding with my head high, the sting of the slap still burning on my cheek, the taste of blood still in my mouth, and a cold, quiet fire building in my chest.

They thought this was the end of me.

They had no idea what they had just started.

I barely made it three steps out of Rami’s office before a hand closed around my arm.“Zara.”Kofi’s voice stopped me cold. I turned slowly. He looked the same and completely different at the same time — still handsome, still polished, but there was something uneasy in his eyes now. The kind of look that said he wasn’t prepared to see me here, of all places.“What the hell are you doing here?” I asked, pulling my arm free.He glanced past me toward Rami’s office door, then back at my face. “I could ask you the same thing. You work here?”“That’s none of your business.”He stepped closer, lowering his voice. “Your mum told Zola you have kids now… is that true?”I froze.“Don’t,” I cut him off. My voice came out sharper than I expected. “Don’t you dare talk about my children.”Kofi’s expression shifted into confusion mixed with something that looked almost like hurt. “Zara, I’m just asking. Are they—?”“They are none of your concern,” I snapped. “You lost the right to ask me anything th

And now he was standing in front of me as the CEO of Apex Global, looking at me like he was confirming something he already knew. The HR Director’s voice sounded distant as she introduced us. Then she left, and the door clicked shut behind her with a soft finality that

Chapter 3I was on my third glass of scotch when I felt someone watching me.The hotel bar was dim and expensive, the kind of place where people spoke in low voices and the lights never fully chased away the shadows. I sat alone at the far end of the counter, still wearing the soft dress I had changed into after walking out of my own wedding. My makeup was gone. My hair was loose. The sting on my cheek had faded into a dull ache, but the emptiness in my chest had only grown heavier.I felt hollow.Like someone had reached inside me and taken everything that used to matter. The man I loved. The sister I trusted. The future I had planned so carefully. All of it was gone, and the silence it left behind was louder than any scream.I didn't want comfort. I didn't want pity. I just wanted to stop feeling so powerless. That was when I looked up and met his eyes.He was sitting a few seats away, dressed in a dark bespoke suit that fit him too perfectly—broad shoulders.
