Chapter 3

Auteur: Summer Sway
The moment I mentioned divorce, Simone's face fell drastically. She grabbed the divorce agreement off the table and tore it to pieces.

Every word she spoke sounded as though it had been forced through clenched teeth. "Divorce? Do you think I'm stupid? You're not my husband, so why should I sign anything? You're just trying to scam me! I'm telling you right now—there's no way I'm falling for it!"

I had already expected she would react heinously, so I no longer spared her any courtesy. "The reason you refuse to divorce me is because you're waiting for me to die so you can take all my assets. Isn't that right?"

Simone's eyes flashed diffidently for a moment. She glared at me viciously. Then, she grabbed my luggage and violently threw it out the door.

She yelled, "What nonsense are you talking about? Get out! Get lost right now!"

Standing beside her, Shawn pretended to look anxious as he grabbed my hand and persuaded me to leave. "Heath, just leave already. Stop provoking Simone. She's already pitiful enough as it is. Show her some mercy."

I let out a cold laugh.

Pitiful? Once she lost me, that was when her existence would truly become pitiful.

After I left, I thought things through again and again before deciding to return to the hospital to resign.

I wasn't running away. It was just that I had finally made up my mind to accept my mentor's invitation to participate in an important overseas medical research project and bring the results back to our home country.

In the past, I couldn't bear to leave Simone, so I kept hesitating. Now, I realized just how important and meaningful this research was. Deep down, I had never truly been able to let it go.

That afternoon, I changed into casual clothes and returned to the hospital.

Philip immediately came over with a worried expression. "Dr. Powell, have you really made your decision? It's such a shame for someone as talented as you to leave."

Philip and I had become doctors at about the same time. We had always been close, so I told him everything about Simone.

After hearing me out, he was so shocked that he couldn't speak for a long time.

In the end, he only managed to force out one sentence. "T-That's absolutely disgusting!"

Suddenly, he squinted slightly and gestured behind me.

I turned around just in time to see Simone and Shawn walking side by side toward us.

Simone sneered and deliberately raised her voice to say, "I already told you that I don't know you. How much longer are you going to fantasize about being my husband? I kicked you out this morning, but you followed me all the way to the hospital. You're so annoying!"

The surrounding patients all turned to look, and murmurs immediately spread through the crowd.

"Huh? Isn't that Dr. Powell? It turns out he's a homewrecker!"

"He looks so educated. I can't believe he'd ruin someone else's marriage."

It sounded like they were talking about me, but Shawn didn't even dare to lift his head.

He held onto Simone's arm tightly and urged, "Didn't you say you were in a lot of pain? Let's hurry and go see the doctor."

I walked over to stand right in front of them to block their path.

My voice was frosty as I said, "Simone, I think you should take a good look at the name written on that brain cancer report."

Simone's head snapped up, and her eyes were bloodshot. "Heath Powell, what does your cancer have to do with me?"

Philip lost his temper at how ridiculous Simone was.

He pointed at Simone and questioned sharply, "Didn't you say you lost your memory? Then, how do you still remember Dr. Powell's name? Cut it out!"

Simone stammered awkwardly before stubbornly arguing, "I have intermittent memory loss!"

I laughed. Then, I unfolded the report and pointed at the name on it.

I spoke each word with extra emphasis. "You haven't forgotten your own name too, have you? Look here. Simone Inman. "

She snatched the report from my hands and stared fixedly at the name written on it. Her face instantly turned deathly pale, and her pupils constricted violently as her body swayed.

Simone shrieked, "N-No… This is impossible! T-This has to be fake! You forged this! You photoshopped it! You're trying to scare me! You're the one who has cancer!"

I crossed my arms and stared at her coolly.

There was a trace of mockery in my tone as I said, "It was always you, Simone."

At that moment, Simone suddenly braced herself against the wall and began vomiting violently. Seeing this, Shawn took several steps backward. One of the police officers cried out in alarm as doctors and nurses hurried over, struggling to help Simone onto a hospital bed. However, she fought like she had gone insane. She kept screaming, "Don't try to take me away! I'm not going! I don't want to die!"A nurse tried to hold her down and comfort her. "Who says you're going to die? Just lie down!"Shawn suddenly let out a sinister laugh. His laughter was shrill and grating to the ears.He mocked, "She's going to die! Why bother comforting her? She has a tumor growing in her brain!"Those cruel words seemed to trigger Simone. Her eyes turned bloodshot as she lunged at Shawn and tightly wrapped her hands around his throat. She hissed, "If I die, then you're dying with me too! If it weren't for you, Heath would never have divorced me! I would never have ended up like this! This is all

One week before the court hearing, the private investigator I had been waiting on finally called me."Mr. Powell, we found what you asked us to investigate, but you'll need to come here and confirm it yourself."His grave tone made my heart skip a beat. Could it really be what I thought?I practically ran to the detective agency. When I arrived, the investigator handed me a stack of photos and said in a low voice, "This is surveillance footage from Haven Supermarket on that day. Although it was damaged, we managed to restore it. These photos show who knocked you over and quickly fled the scene."My hands trembled as I took them. I flipped through the pages one by one. I was trembling so much that I couldn't speak. In that instant, I recalled fragmented pieces of memories that evoked a stabbing pain in my heart. It felt as though shards of glass were cutting into it.That day, I had accompanied Simone to the hospital for a prenatal checkup. We had been about to go home when she

Suddenly, Shawn walked over from behind me with a disdainful expression. He argued, "Drop the act already. I checked with a lawyer. The company was established after your marriage, so it counts as joint property after marriage. Besides, Simone was the one managing it from the beginning, so of course it should belong to her!"I couldn't help but laugh out loud. "You probably didn't look into it carefully enough. I bought the company property before we got married. It didn't begin operating until afterward."Simone shoved Shawn away and shouted at him. "Stop it, Shawn! Didn't I tell you not to come? What are you trying to do?"Shawn stubbornly shot back, "What? Am I not allowed to come? If I didn't come, you'd lose everything, you idiot!"Simone ignored him and turned toward me instead. Her eyes were red as she choked back sobs. "Don't listen to him, Heath. I don't care if I lose the crappy company. So be it! But I'm begging you—please don't divorce me! Don't leave me, Heath!"I

After I left the hospital, I hurried straight to a law firm and asked a close acquaintance to help me contact a reliable private investigator.Participating in an overseas medical research project would take up to four or five years. There were some things I had to settle properly before I left for good.As soon as I sat down at the law firm, I habitually opened my social media feed and saw Shawn's latest post.He wrote, "1+1=3. This is my happiness."The attached photo was an ultrasound showing a two-month pregnancy.Simone's cancer diagnosis was an undeniable fact, yet he was obviously still deceiving himself.I casually tapped "Like" and commented, "Hurry up and get the child's mother to divorce me. Otherwise, it'll always be an illegitimate child."After that, I blocked and deleted both of them from my contacts. That evening, I received a call from Simone's mother, Jane Swift. She was a kind and simple woman from a rural area. Ever since I married Simone, she had always tr

Simone staggered toward me. Her eyes were bloodshot as she screamed, "Heath, you bastard! You lied to me!"The hand she had raised to slap me froze midair before falling weakly back down. Then, she questioned me instead. "This isn't right! You're a doctor yourself! Why didn't you tell me earlier? Y-You… Were you hoping I'd die?"Philip shoved her away and stood protectively in front of me as he shouted, "What are you talking about? The hospital called you long ago and told you to come back for treatment! "But over the phone, you said no one at home had cancer! You even said since there's no cure for cancer, there was no point in treating it even if someone had it!"Upon seeing that Simone tried to come closer to grab me again, Philip sternly stopped her at once. He said furiously, "We have a recording of that call. Do you want us to play it for you?"With Philip defending me so unwaveringly, all the grievances that I had suppressed surged up all at once. My eyes reddened with
