Chapter 4

Author: Triple Six
Dalton's POV

Ethan covered his nose, making no effort to hide his disgust.

Instinctively, I drew back and tried to hide the mud caked across my clothes.

The gesture only seemed to delight him.

"Oh, I get it now." His eyes lit up with feigned realization. "You came all this way because you knew Grace would be here, didn't you? That's why you're shamelessly hanging around here."

He sounded perfectly innocent, but every word was aimed to humiliate me.

I could feel Grace's eyes on me.

A wave of shame swept over me, and the last scraps of pride I had left made me lower my head.

That night, I was given a cramped storage room in a forgotten corner of the estate. It couldn't have been more different from the bedroom I'd had before I was sent away. Still, compared to the rundown cabin I'd lived in for the past three years, it felt almost luxurious.

A familiar ache began spreading through my chest. I curled up on the narrow bed and drifted off to sleep.

…

The next day, I stayed in the storage room from morning until night. No one came looking for me. It was as if the family had forgotten I existed.

On the third morning, I woke as the first pale light of dawn crept through the window.

Today was the day.

I washed up as best I could and took out an old sweater, faded from years of washing. Mom had made it for me herself. I wanted to wear it when I visited her grave.

The early spring morning was bitterly cold, and the thin sweater did little to keep out the chill. I shivered as I walked, while every old injury seemed to ache at once.

Three years of neglect had left my body frighteningly weak. I hadn't gone far before a metallic taste filled my mouth.

Still, I forced myself to walk faster. I was running out of time. Whatever happened, I had to make it to Mom.

But a moment later, my knees suddenly gave way. I pitched forward and hit the ground.

The impact left me dizzy. I tried to get back on my feet, but my body simply wouldn't cooperate.

As the minutes slipped by, even keeping my eyes open became difficult. A sharp pain tore through my chest with every breath.

"I'm sorry, Mom," I said to myself. "In the end, I couldn't even make it to you."

"Dalton, get in." A familiar voice cut through the haze. Before I could make sense of it, someone helped me off the ground and into the back seat of a car.

"G-Grace?"

She glanced at me, something complicated passing through her eyes. "Don't read into it. I just couldn't leave someone collapsed on the side of the road."

I managed a faint, almost grateful smile. Then, I curled into myself and stopped talking, conserving what little strength I had left.

When we reached the cemetery, Grace dropped me off and drove away.

I'd barely managed to steady myself when a slap struck me across the face.

"Dalton Whitmore, have you no shame?" Claire snapped. "Grace is Ethan's fiancee!"

Ethan stood behind her, wearing an expression of perfect innocence. "She's right, Dalton. I thought you said you were over Grace."

The blow made my already weakened body reel. I opened my mouth to defend myself, but another wave of agony seized my chest.

I knew what it meant. I didn't have much time left.

Taking several shallow breaths, I ignored them and stumbled toward Mom's grave. Nothing else mattered anymore.

By the end, I could barely stay on my feet. I dragged myself the last stretch until her headstone finally came into view.

"Dalton!" Claire shouted behind me. "Ethan is talking to you! Don't you dare walk away from him!"

She caught up and shoved me down before I could reach the grave.

I collapsed into the wet grass.

A violent cough seized me, and blood splattered across the bottom of Mom's headstone.

Panic surged through me.

"No…"

I frantically wiped at it with my sleeve, only smearing the stain farther across the stone. My vision blurred until I could barely make out the letters carved into the granite.

With the last of my strength, I reached out. My trembling fingertips brushed over Mom's name.

A small, peaceful smile touched my lips.

"Mom, I made it," I thought.

My hand slipped from the stone, and my eyes closed.

When I stopped responding, Claire only grew angrier. She grabbed me by the shoulders and hauled me toward her. "Dalton, I'm talking to you! Do you hear me?"

  • My Fake Twin Stole My Life   Chapter 9

Dalton's POVAfter the disaster with the proposal, both Claire and Grace were suddenly determined to shower me with attention. It was almost as if they were competing to see who could do more for me.Claire had the latest AI-powered home theater system installed in my hospital suite. Grace countered with rare paintings, designer clothes, and limited-edition collectibles that most people couldn't get their hands on no matter how much they were willing to pay.I couldn't bring myself to care about any of it.But apparently, someone else cared far too much.Late one night, Ethan appeared in the doorway of my hospital room. There was something almost unhinged in his expression."You idiot," he hissed. "Why couldn't you just die in the countryside? Why did you have to come back?"His face twisted with hatred. "Why did you have to take everything away from me?"I regarded him coldly. "Take everything from you?"A humorless laugh escaped me. "Ethan, which one of us took the other's l

Dalton's POVI frowned. "Grace, I don't want to marry you.""What?"For the first time, genuine surprise crossed her face."Why not? Are you still angry about what happened three years ago?"She sighed as though I were the unreasonable one. "Back then, I didn't understand how I really felt about you. That's why I was so cold."Then she added, with astonishing matter-of-factness, "And after you fell out of favor with Claire, marrying Ethan simply made more sense. Our families have business interests tied together. From that perspective, he was the better match."Made more sense? So that was all marriage meant to her? A business deal?I gave a humorless laugh. "And now marrying me makes more sense?"Grace's expression stiffened."Dalton! That's not what I meant."She took a deep breath and softened her voice. "I admit I treated you badly three years ago. But I've had a lot of time to think since then, and I finally understand what I feel for you."When I saw you collapse at y

Dalton's POVBut no matter how hard I worked, Claire never looked at me with pride again. In the end, she even forced me to give Ethan the spot at Westbridge University, one I'd worked so hard to earn."Dalton!" Claire's voice tore me from the memory. My eyes slowly opened. She was sitting beside my bed, her eyes swollen and red. Tears streamed down her face. "I'm sorry, Dalton. I'm so sorry." Her voice shook. "This is my fault. I never imagined those people would go this far."They took my instructions into something I never intended. I wanted them to discipline you, not abuse you. I never told them to hurt you like this."I should've checked on you. I should've made sure you were safe. I should've taken care of you."For a moment, she sounded exactly like the sister I remembered. Once, hearing that tenderness in her voice would have been enough to make me forgive almost anything. But not anymore.I simply looked at her, my eyes cold, and said nothing. Claire flinched be

Dalton's POV"Isn't he Ms. Whitmore's brother?" one of the nurses whispered. "How did he end up with so many injuries?""Some of these are old, and some are newer. This didn't happen all at once."Another member of the medical team stared at me in disbelief."He's supposed to be a Whitmore? How could anyone let him end up like this?"By the time the last round of tests came back, the doctors' expressions had turned grim. One younger doctor was so disturbed by what she'd seen that she pulled out her phone, ready to call the police. The attending physician stopped her before she could place the call.A few moments later, the attending physician stepped into the hallway.Claire immediately rushed toward her. "How's my brother? Is he awake yet? Is he getting better?"The doctor sighed. "Your brother has suffered prolonged physical abuse and severe neglect. His body has been pushed far beyond its limits."She paused, her expression grave. "At this stage, I'm afraid there's very li

Third-Person POVClaire hauled Dalton up like a rag doll, but he barely reacted. Then, she noticed the blood staining the front of his sweater. Her expression changed instantly. "Dalton! What's wrong?" He no longer had the strength to answer. It finally seemed to dawn on Claire that something was seriously wrong. She caught Dalton before he could collapse again and frantically looked around for help. "Call an ambulance!" She turned to Ethan, who was staring at them in surprise. "Ethan, hurry! Call 911!"Just then, a familiar car pulled up near the cemetery entrance. Grace stepped out."I was passing by and heard someone had collapsed. What happened?" She tried to sound composed, but the worry in her eyes betrayed her. She had been on her way home when she'd heard Claire shouting Dalton's name. Something about it had unsettled her enough to make her turn around. Then, her gaze fell on Dalton. The moment she saw the blood soaking his sweater, her usual composure shattered.
