Chapter 4

Author: Melton
The next morning, I stood in the center of the villa's living room, holding the only suitcase I owned.

The house where I'd lived for the past five years felt so empty now that even the sound of my breathing echoed off the walls.

My personal belongings and Mom's keepsakes had been shipped out the night before. As for Kalev's things, I didn't touch a single one of them. I left them all exactly where they were, just like a pile of worthless trash.

Two heavy brass keys lay in the center of the coffee table. Resting right on top of them was the necklace that signified the status of Luna of the pack.

Since our mating ceremony had never been completed, I was thus spared the tedious process of severing the bond with him.

At 8:00 am sharp, Randy arrived at the door with Debbie. After verifying all of the details, Debbie signed the property transfer deed and smiled at me.

"I wish you all the best in your new home, Ms. Whiteclaw. May the Moon Goddess watch over you always."

I returned her a calm smile. "Thank you. I'll be leaving this property in your hands now."

Then, I wheeled my suitcase out the front door and got into the car bound for the border of the pack's territory. I didn't look back. I didn't even stop for anything.

The car drove out of the borders at 10:00 am later that day. I shut my eyes and shut out everything that was related to this territory and this pack.

From now on, Kalev could use his pheromones to soothe Freya for as long as he wanted to. I just wouldn't be waiting for him at home anymore.

…

At 3:00 pm, Kalev pushed open the front door of the villa, carrying several portions of freshly grilled barbecue meat.

He was still mulling over yesterday's conflict, wondering how to win me back with a lavish dinner tonight.

"Ariel, I brought back your favorite barbecue for dinner. Come eat it while it's hot…"

His voice trailed off as he came to an abrupt halt.

The house was too quiet. The only sound he could hear was the crackling of dying embers in the fireplace. However, what terrified him even more was the scent in the air.

The cool, crisp cedarwood scent that belonged to me was rapidly dissipating, and it was quickly getting replaced by a lifeless, hollow void.

He glanced at the entryway and saw that the soft-soled boots I usually wore were gone.

He snapped his head up and saw that my wool blanket was missing from the couch. The trinkets I had kept scattered around the shelves had also vanished.

Even our portraits on the wall—depicting the two of us on a hunt—had been taken down, leaving behind only a pale, faded mark.

Kalev's heart clenched violently as an inexplicable chill washed over his entire body.

"Ariel! What the hell are you playing at this time?"

He strode into the master bedroom and yanked open the wardrobe doors, realizing that not a single item of my clothing was left. There were just a few of his black coats hanging inside, looking forlorn and rather solitary amidst all the space.

He turned and rushed back to the living room, finally noticing the items resting on the coffee table—the two brass keys and the Luna necklace, glimmering coldly and harshly in the light.

The barbecue meat he'd been holding dropped onto the wooden floor, splattering grease everywhere.

Suddenly, the front door was pushed open from the outside. Kalev whipped his head around at once, his eyes flashing with joy that somewhat bordered on a certain kind of madness.

"Ariel? You're back—"

However, the wolf walking in was that strange she-wolf from the day before.

Debbie was bringing in the cleaning supplies when she froze in terror the moment she saw Kalev.

"A-Alpha Kalev?"

Kalev's face was deathly pale. His Alpha aura spilled out uncontrollably as he demanded, "Who are you? What are you doing in my and Ariel's home?"

Debbie's legs buckled under the crushing pressure of his aura, bringing her to the verge of collapsing onto her knees.

Trembling, she pulled the stamped transfer deed from her bag and replied in a quivering voice, "Alpha… Ms. Whiteclaw transferred this property to me yesterday… She's already left the pack early this morning…"

My signature on the transfer deed made the world go black before Kalev's eyes. He staggered backward, knocking over a floor lamp. It wasn't until then that the realization hit him with jarring clarity.

My answer yesterday hadn't actually been a compromise on my part. Rather, it had been a verdict instead.

So, the unfamiliar scent in the house from before hadn't been from a repairman. It had been from a buyer all along. I had planned every step of my departure long ago, waiting only for the right moment to completely excise him from my life.

Kalev's legs gave way, and he collapsed heavily onto his knees before the coffee table. He picked up the Luna necklace with trembling hands—the one that he had personally fastened around my neck years ago as a symbol of his lifelong vow.

But now, it felt bitterly cold in his hands, completely devoid of any trace of my warmth.

"Ariel…"

Silence befell the wooden house. Only the crackling of the burning firewood in the fireplace could be heard.Kalev's face was completely ashen. He dropped heavily to his knees, hitting the wooden floor with a loud thud."Ariel… I didn't know… I really didn't know…"He clutched his hair in anguish, digging his fingernails deep into his scalp until they drew blood."I was a jerk… I was a bastard… I was completely blinded by Freya's lies…"As he spoke, he slapped himself hard across the face twice. The sharp sound of the slaps echoed throughout the house, and his face quickly began swelling."You can hit me, curse at me, or even stab me with a dagger, but please, don't just abandon me and cast me aside, Ariel! I'm begging you to please give me one more chance! I'll even step down as Alpha as long as you'll come back to me! I don't want anything else anymore!"He was behaving like a stray dog who'd just lost his territory, desperately clinging to a final shred of hope.I looked dow

It was evening by the time Kalev arrived at the marketplace in Icewind Glen. He followed the extremely faint scent that belonged to me and stopped in front of a wooden house selling magic protective gear. The door was slightly ajar, and he could see warm orange flames coming from the fireplace inside. He stood outside the door, breathing rapidly while his chest heaved violently. He had been rehearsing the reunion scene in his head countless times in the past six months. He had planned to get down on his knees and beg me for my forgiveness, hand over the most valuable piece of land in the pack, admit his mistakes, repent, and renew his oath to the Moon Goddess with his life as collateral. But the moment he pushed the door open, all the words he planned to say caught in his throat. There was a warm fireplace inside the house, and I was sitting in a rocking chair, polishing a moonstone.Kalev opened his mouth, but before he could call my name, a tall wolf came out of the back room.

Six months later, Kalev was still drinking strong liquor in the council chamber day and night.Over the past six months, he'd been desperately sending out his warriors to track my scent, but the Neutral Zone was a chaotic melting pot where thousands of beings from various races came and went every day. It was simply impossible to track my scent down. After leaving the pack, I had transferred to another vehicle heading for the northern snowfields, effectively vanishing without a trace.Since Kalev couldn't find me, he sought to numb himself through ceaseless hunting and territorial expansion. The pack warriors were exhausted, and the Elders complained about it every day, but Kalev didn't care. That afternoon, Piper pushed open the heavy doors of the council chamber and said, "Alpha, the guard units sent word asking you to go over. It's about Freya."Kalev frowned.Half a year ago, he had stripped Freya of her privileges in the Central Territory and revoked all protection he had gr

Debbie was still pressing herself flat against the door as she resisted Kalev's Alpha aura, not daring to breathe too heavily. Meanwhile, Kalev gripped the necklace tightly before staggering out of the door. His mind kept replaying Debbie's words—that I had sold her the house yesterday, and I had left the pack early this morning. He pulled out his phone at once and called his Beta, Piper Thorne. His voice trembled violently as he barked, "Go and investigate Ariel's whereabouts! Find out where she's heading to at once!"15 minutes later, Piper called back with an answer."Alpha Kalev, Ms. Whiteclaw boarded a vehicle that was heading north. However, she wiped away all traces of her scent trail as soon as she left the pack."But since her mother's already passed away, and she has no other living relatives, we're unable to track her through the bloodline link. Also… she voluntarily removed her name from the pack's registry."Kalev leaned against the cold stone wall, gasping loudly f

The next morning, I went to see the witch, Megan Wysteria. When Mom passed away, a corner of the moonstone amulet that she'd been wearing had been knocked off, and Megan had helped me repair it. The silver repair lines crossed through the blue stone like a scar that would never heal.I put the amulet away in a velvet box and returned home. The moment I opened the door, a familiar scent of pheromones hit me in the face at once. Freya was seated on the couch in the living room, scrolling on her phone.I held my coat in one hand and the velvet box in the other. After walking in through the door, I turned sideways and closed it with my elbow, temporarily placing the velvet box on the low table at the entrance. I was planning to take my coat and put it on the coat rack in the room. But in the few seconds it took me to take off my coat and turn back around, I saw that the velvet box had already been opened, and Freya was brazenly wearing Mom's moonstone amulet around her neck.My mind
