Chapter 3

Author: Melton
The next morning, I went to see the witch, Megan Wysteria.

When Mom passed away, a corner of the moonstone amulet that she'd been wearing had been knocked off, and Megan had helped me repair it. The silver repair lines crossed through the blue stone like a scar that would never heal.

I put the amulet away in a velvet box and returned home.

The moment I opened the door, a familiar scent of pheromones hit me in the face at once. Freya was seated on the couch in the living room, scrolling on her phone.

I held my coat in one hand and the velvet box in the other. After walking in through the door, I turned sideways and closed it with my elbow, temporarily placing the velvet box on the low table at the entrance. I was planning to take my coat and put it on the coat rack in the room.

But in the few seconds it took me to take off my coat and turn back around, I saw that the velvet box had already been opened, and Freya was brazenly wearing Mom's moonstone amulet around her neck.

My mind went blank for a moment. In the next second, I sprinted over to her at once.

"Who gave you permission to touch it?"

I grabbed the chain with my fingers and forcefully tore it off her neck. The thin chain dug into her skin, leaving a red mark.

She screamed and stepped back in shock, catching her heels on the leg of the coffee table. Then, she fell backward, and her elbow knocked off the crystal mug on the edge of the table.

Broken crystal shards fell across the floor, and her palm happened to land on a piece of the broken mug. Blood poured out from the wound at once.

"Ariel Whiteclaw! What the hell do you think you're doing!"

Kalev's loud roar came from the door as he stormed in. His Alpha aura suppressed me at once as he grabbed me by my shoulders and shoved me away.

I stumbled backward and hit my lower back hard against the corner of the oak cabinet. The pain was so sharp that it made my vision go completely black for a moment.

However, Kalev didn't even bother looking at me. He crouched over on the ground and carefully cradled Freya's bleeding hand in his.

"Does it hurt, Freya? Don't move, I'll take you to a healer right away!"

Freya cried pitifully and kept shaking her head.

"It's okay, Kai, it doesn't hurt that much… Please don't blame this on Ari. I saw the box on the table and thought that it was a gift that you bought for me, so I just put it on without thinking much…"

Kalev immediately turned his head around to glare darkly at me.

"It's just a stupid broken stone! Would it kill you to lend it to her for a moment? How dare you push her against the broken glass on the floor, Ariel? When did you become so evil and vicious?"

I clutched the amulet tightly in my hands, my nails digging into my palms.

"Does this belong to her? It was the only thing my mom left for me!"

The anger on Kalev's face froze for a moment. But Freya gasped lightly in his arms as she continued sobbing, and Kalev immediately took her side once more.

"I already told you that I would accompany you to see your mother another day! I've also contacted the best healer in the pack, so why the hell are you still spinning lies like that just to catch my attention? If your mother knew that you were lying about her being dead like this, she'd never forgive you!

"All Freya wanted to do was try on the necklace because she was curious about it, and you were vicious enough to try and kill her? It's not like it's worth anything anyway! Just leave it be! Will you only be happy after driving your own pack member to death over a lifeless thing?"

Even now, Kalev still thought that I was lying to him and using it to create even more excuses for myself. I was so exhausted that I didn't even have any energy left to defend myself anymore.

I slowly stood upright while bracing myself against the oak cabinet. I then looked at him, my heart as still as a pool of stagnant water.

Whatever. He could think whatever he wanted to think. I didn't care anymore.

"You're right. The living are more important than the dead."

Kalev thought that I was finally admitting my mistake and relaxed his brow just a little. His tone became condescending as he said, "It's good that you know you were in the wrong. I'm taking Freya to the healing center. You will stay home and reflect on your behavior today."

Then, he picked her up bridal-style, pausing only for a second when he reached the door.

"Clean up all the mess on the floor. I'll bring home your favorite barbecue tonight."

Then, the door slammed with a bang behind him, leaving behind broken pieces of the crystal mug and Freya's blood on the floor.

I slid to the floor with my back against the wall, finally opening my palms and looking at the amulet inside. The moonstone hadn't been damaged again, and that was more than enough for me.

I took out my phone and called Randy. I said, "I will hand over everything right on time at 8:00 am tomorrow, and all transfer procedures will be completed at the same time."

After hanging up, I stood up again while holding on to the wall before looking at the mess in the room.

Tomorrow, I was going to personally bury them all behind me, along with the past five ridiculous years I'd spent with Kalev.

Silence befell the wooden house. Only the crackling of the burning firewood in the fireplace could be heard.Kalev's face was completely ashen. He dropped heavily to his knees, hitting the wooden floor with a loud thud."Ariel… I didn't know… I really didn't know…"He clutched his hair in anguish, digging his fingernails deep into his scalp until they drew blood."I was a jerk… I was a bastard… I was completely blinded by Freya's lies…"As he spoke, he slapped himself hard across the face twice. The sharp sound of the slaps echoed throughout the house, and his face quickly began swelling."You can hit me, curse at me, or even stab me with a dagger, but please, don't just abandon me and cast me aside, Ariel! I'm begging you to please give me one more chance! I'll even step down as Alpha as long as you'll come back to me! I don't want anything else anymore!"He was behaving like a stray dog who'd just lost his territory, desperately clinging to a final shred of hope.I looked dow

It was evening by the time Kalev arrived at the marketplace in Icewind Glen. He followed the extremely faint scent that belonged to me and stopped in front of a wooden house selling magic protective gear. The door was slightly ajar, and he could see warm orange flames coming from the fireplace inside. He stood outside the door, breathing rapidly while his chest heaved violently. He had been rehearsing the reunion scene in his head countless times in the past six months. He had planned to get down on his knees and beg me for my forgiveness, hand over the most valuable piece of land in the pack, admit his mistakes, repent, and renew his oath to the Moon Goddess with his life as collateral. But the moment he pushed the door open, all the words he planned to say caught in his throat. There was a warm fireplace inside the house, and I was sitting in a rocking chair, polishing a moonstone.Kalev opened his mouth, but before he could call my name, a tall wolf came out of the back room.

Six months later, Kalev was still drinking strong liquor in the council chamber day and night.Over the past six months, he'd been desperately sending out his warriors to track my scent, but the Neutral Zone was a chaotic melting pot where thousands of beings from various races came and went every day. It was simply impossible to track my scent down. After leaving the pack, I had transferred to another vehicle heading for the northern snowfields, effectively vanishing without a trace.Since Kalev couldn't find me, he sought to numb himself through ceaseless hunting and territorial expansion. The pack warriors were exhausted, and the Elders complained about it every day, but Kalev didn't care. That afternoon, Piper pushed open the heavy doors of the council chamber and said, "Alpha, the guard units sent word asking you to go over. It's about Freya."Kalev frowned.Half a year ago, he had stripped Freya of her privileges in the Central Territory and revoked all protection he had gr

Debbie was still pressing herself flat against the door as she resisted Kalev's Alpha aura, not daring to breathe too heavily. Meanwhile, Kalev gripped the necklace tightly before staggering out of the door. His mind kept replaying Debbie's words—that I had sold her the house yesterday, and I had left the pack early this morning. He pulled out his phone at once and called his Beta, Piper Thorne. His voice trembled violently as he barked, "Go and investigate Ariel's whereabouts! Find out where she's heading to at once!"15 minutes later, Piper called back with an answer."Alpha Kalev, Ms. Whiteclaw boarded a vehicle that was heading north. However, she wiped away all traces of her scent trail as soon as she left the pack."But since her mother's already passed away, and she has no other living relatives, we're unable to track her through the bloodline link. Also… she voluntarily removed her name from the pack's registry."Kalev leaned against the cold stone wall, gasping loudly f

The next morning, I stood in the center of the villa's living room, holding the only suitcase I owned. The house where I'd lived for the past five years felt so empty now that even the sound of my breathing echoed off the walls. My personal belongings and Mom's keepsakes had been shipped out the night before. As for Kalev's things, I didn't touch a single one of them. I left them all exactly where they were, just like a pile of worthless trash. Two heavy brass keys lay in the center of the coffee table. Resting right on top of them was the necklace that signified the status of Luna of the pack.Since our mating ceremony had never been completed, I was thus spared the tedious process of severing the bond with him.At 8:00 am sharp, Randy arrived at the door with Debbie. After verifying all of the details, Debbie signed the property transfer deed and smiled at me."I wish you all the best in your new home, Ms. Whiteclaw. May the Moon Goddess watch over you always."I returned her
