Chapter 2

Author: Gogo Coco
Blair's POV

On my way to the pack's altar, I pulled out my phone and made a call. "Three years ago, you offered me the position of Chief Healer in Northdent. Is that offer still open?"

The person on the other end answered without hesitation. "Of course. We've been waiting for you."

I nodded, my voice cold and firm. "Alright. I accept. But I need you to arrange a car accident to fake my death so I can leave this place for good."

After hanging up, my phone was flooded with messages from Jesse.

"Blair, where the hell are you? Joey's practically losing his mind!"

"He even got hurt looking for you! Mom and Dad are worried sick!"

"Please, stop scaring us and come back!"

A moment later, he sent me a video. In the footage, Joey was searching for me on the hillside behind the festival square when he lost his footing and tumbled down the slope.

Deep cuts ran along his arm, and his clothes were covered in mud. But he didn't stop. He struggled to his feet and limped forward, calling my name over and over.

I stared at the video for a long time before finally replying with an address.

Two months ago, I'd finally woken up. Jesse told me that for the past three years, Joey had faithfully prayed to the Moon Goddess at the pack's altar.

He'd carved my name into the back of a moonstone and placed it in the center of the altar, praying that I would wake up someday.

When I heard what he'd done, my heart swelled with emotion, and I couldn't help crying.

Joey had held my hand tightly, a complicated look in his eyes. "Thank the Moon Goddess for bringing my fated mate back to me."

At the time, I hadn't understood why he'd looked at me so strangely. Looking back now, I realized it hadn't been the joy of finally getting me back. It had been guilt he couldn't bring himself to face.

I turned off my phone and approached the pack's altar. My gaze fell on the moonstone at its center. I reached out and turned it over.

The moment I saw the name carved into the back, my breath caught, and my blood ran cold.

The poisoning three years ago hadn't just stolen three years of my life. I'd also been newly pregnant at the time. The poison had caused severe bleeding and made me lose the first pup Joey and I had conceived together.

Yet the moonstone that was supposed to carry prayers for me and our pup bore Emily's name instead.

The familiar handwriting stung my eyes. My entire body trembled uncontrollably as overwhelming grief surged through me. I suddenly raised my hand, ready to smash the moonstone against the ground.

Joey rushed out and shouted at me sharply. "Blair! Stop!"

He grabbed me and yanked me away, snatching the moonstone from my hand. "Don't touch it!"

I clenched my fists and demanded in despair, "Why can't I touch it? This moonstone was supposed to carry prayers for me and the pup we lost! So, whose name did you put on it instead?"

Tears streamed down my face, blurring my vision. I stared at Joey, determined to force an answer out of him.

He looked at me with pain in his eyes but said nothing.

Suddenly, Mom's voice came from behind me. "Joey had nothing to do with this. Your dad and I made that decision."

"Ms. Whitmore, there are some people outside claiming to be your family. They've been waiting at the entrance all night, begging to see you."I wiped the blood from my hands, unmoved. "Let them wait."It was quite some time before I finally stepped outside. I stood before them, my expression cold. The moment Joey saw me, he dropped to his knees, despite how weak he still was. "Blair! It really is you... You're alive. You're actually alive..."He shuffled toward me on his knees, sobbing openly. "I was wrong! I've sent Emily away! You'll never have to see her again, I swear! But when he caught the cold look in my eyes, he stopped himself and lowered his head without a word.Jesse saw the exchange and stormed over, pointing an accusing finger in my face. "Blair, how can you be so cruel? It's been years! Why can't you just let it go? As long as I'm here, you're not sending Emily anywhere!"My own flesh and blood stood in front of Emily, shielding her from me.
