Chapter 2

Author: Chelsea
The kidnapper's face darkened, and he strode to the window.

"How many?"

"Only one car so far. Lorenzo's in it."

My heart slammed against my ribs. If Lorenzo could just get inside, I still had a chance.

But their leader quickly grabbed the phone and called my father again.

When the call connected, he didn't let anyone get a word in.

"Don Moretti, tell Lorenzo to back the hell off.

"Or I break your daughter's arm right now."

"What?! What the hell is Lorenzo doing there?!"

My father's fists clenched, and he turned on my brother in a rage.

"You went behind my back!

"Call Lorenzo off."

My brother had sent Lorenzo in secret. Now he was frantic.

"Dad! It took everything I had to—"

"Shut up."

"But he's already found Elena!"

"So?"

My father's voice was still calm.

"You find out where she is and just charge in?

"If this were a real kidnapping, they'd be holding the hostage.

"The moment your men got close, Elena could be the first one they killed."

My brother went quiet. I sank deeper into despair. My father sounded barely worried at all.

He still thought this whole thing was a drill.

He still believed the people holding me were the six men he'd sent.

The kidnapper could clearly hear it too.

He looked down at me, and a slow smile spread across his face.

"Your father's something else."

Then he spoke into the phone.

"I didn't call to listen to you lecture your son.

"Ten million euros. And you're almost out of time."

My father's voice was cold. "I can get the money ready. But I want her back alive."

The kidnapper laughed. "That depends on how well you cooperate."

He grabbed a fistful of my hair and held the phone up to my face.

"Say something to your family."

I was in so much pain my lips had gone numb.

"Dad."

My father answered right away, "I'm here."

"Please. No more tests."

My voice was getting fainter. "Something's really... wrong with them..."

The line went quiet for a moment.

But my father still didn't budge.

"Elena, as a Moretti princess, you have to get used to situations like this. Don't you dare hold your brother back!

"Be good and hang on a little longer.

"Besides, with me here, you'll be fine. Have some faith in your dad."

Tears spilled down my face. "But I've already been shot," I choked out. "It hurts so much."

My father scoffed. "You got shot because your brother made the wrong call. If I weren't here—"

Before he could finish, my brother lost it and shouted over him, "Dad, I know I'm useless. Please, just stop the drill right now!"

My father's voice turned to ice.

"You think I like watching Elena get hurt?! But you still haven't learned how to handle a real kidnapping!

"The second you heard Elena was hurt, your first move was to send Lorenzo storming in.

"If you were dealing with a real enemy, that decision would already have gotten her killed."

The kidnapper cut in, losing patience.

"Don't forget about the ten million euros.

"In 20 minutes, I won't care whether your son has learned how to deal with kidnappers."

My brother's breathing grew heavier.

Then a dull thud came through the phone.

It sounded like knees hitting the floor hard.

"Dad."

My brother's voice was raw.

"I'm begging you. End the test.

"Pay them or storm the place, whatever it takes. Just bring Elena back.

"I'm the one making the calls in this test, and I've made my decision."

For a moment, the line was silent. Then my father gave a curt, ice-cold reply.

"Get up, Matteo.

"The future Don of the Moretti family doesn't kneel for anyone.

"Not even for your sister."

Old and hunched over, my father sat slumped on the ground. He didn't get up for a long time."Elena, I haven't had one good day in all these years."I lost your mom. And Matteo doesn't want to be close to me."I didn't say anything, so he hurried on, "I'm not asking you to feel sorry for me. I just want you to know that I really do regret it."I nodded."I know."A little light came back into my father's eyes.A second later, I went on, "But your regret is your business. It has nothing to do with whether I forgive you."That little light went out at once. My father's lips wouldn't stop trembling."Then what else can I do? I'll give you anything."I looked at him."I'm already dead. I don't want anything."My father broke down, his voice rough with sobs."Elena... hit me. Yell at me."Make me suffer every one of those injuries too, okay? Just don't turn your back on your dad."I shook my head. My father froze."You think once you've been punished enough, I'm supposed to forgive you. But

Suddenly, everything around us went dark. When my father opened his eyes again, we were standing on the Palermo docks. Some men had 16-year-old me backed into a corner. I was terrified, clutching the jewelry I'd just pulled off.I kept saying, "This stuff is worth a lot. Take all of it! Just don't kill me!"The color left my father's face."Elena!"He rushed forward, but his hand went right through my body. The girl I used to be couldn't see him at all.Like a madman, my father threw himself in front of me."Get away from her!"But the men walked straight through him. He couldn't stop any of it.Then the scene changed. We were in the basement.I was curled up in a corner, clutching my broken ribs.I'd wanted so badly for my father to hold me. But he just stood outside the door, as calm and controlled as ever. "Take a good look," he told Matteo. "Going soft will get your family killed."My father rushed at his past self and tried to grab him."Shut up! Get her out of there! She's hurt!"

Many years later, my father was too old to get out of bed.Matteo sat by his bedside. After the doctor left, my father suddenly opened his cloudy eyes. He stared hard at the doorway, and tears spilled down his face."Elena?"My brother turned around in surprise, but the doorway was empty. Still, my father pushed against the mattress, using all his strength to try to sit up."Elena! It's really you!"I was the vision he saw as he lay dying. There I stood, still 22.My father reached out his hand."Come here. Let Dad take a look at you."I didn't move. His hand froze in midair."Are you still mad at your dad?""I'm not mad."My father's eyes lit up."Then did you come to take me with you?"I shook my head."No."My father went still."Then you...""I just came to take a look."He cried even harder."All these years, I've been waiting for you."I looked at him."But I haven't been waiting for you."My father's face went white. He opened his mouth. A long moment passed before he spoke, his

My father seemed unable to believe his eyes. He roughly wiped away his tears and stared at the letter. At last, he opened it with shaking hands. The first line read:"Dad, I'm sorry."My father started crying again. He gripped the letter tightly and kept reading."By the time you read this, I'll probably have left Sicily."Please don't be mad. I'm just a little tired."My father's breathing grew heavier."You always said my injuries meant something because Matteo would remember them."But Dad, to me, it was just one needless injury after another."I never did anything wrong, did I?"My father's hand jerked, and the paper rustled."I never blamed my brother."When he screwed up, he got scared too. He'd beg you not to punish me."The one who really scared me was you."Every time Matteo screwed up, you'd stare at me like a monster about to eat me alive. I was terrified."My father suddenly pressed the letter to his face. The sobs he'd been holding back finally broke loose."Elena..."No o

After stepping down, my father was no longer so busy. He finally had time to learn about my life. One rainy day, he walked into my room.Pietro Bellini, our old butler, was inside sorting through my things. When he saw my father, he stopped and gave a small, respectful nod."Sir."My father nodded without a word and walked over to the closet.A suitcase was standing there."What's this?"Pietro lowered his head."Elena packed it."My father turned back to him, puzzled."Packed it for what?""To leave Sicily."My father was taken aback. He crouched down and unzipped the suitcase.Clothes. A passport and ID. And a one-way plane ticket to London, dated 15 days after the kidnapping. My father held the ticket. His breathing quickened, and his hands started to shake."When did she buy this?""About a month ago."Pietro hesitated, but spoke anyway. "Elena told me not to tell anyone. Especially you."My father turned to him in disbelief. Pietro's eyes were red too."She said that if you knew,

The next day, my father called together the entire inner circle of the Moretti family.Matteo was summoned back too.Every seat at the long table was taken. My father sat at the head. Without warning, he announced, "As of today, I'm stepping down."The room erupted."Don! What are you saying?"Lorenzo shot to his feet."The Moretti family needs you!"My father raised a hand, and every voice fell silent. He looked at Matteo."Come here."My brother stared at him, stunned, and didn't move.My father took off the ring he'd worn for more than 20 years and set it on the table in front of his chair."This seat is yours."Matteo's expression changed."I don't want it."My father nodded."You can hate me. But you have to take over."My brother slammed his hand on the table."Why? Because of Elena?"My father's eyes reddened. The whole table was dead silent. After a long time, he swallowed hard and finally spoke."I've thought about this for a long time. I've made up my mind."You're kind and d
