Chapter 1

A bullet tore into my left leg. The pain jolted me back to my senses. I knew right away that something was wrong.

My father had told me this was only a drill.

His men would stop my car, blindfold me, and take me to a warehouse outside the city. They'd set up a kidnapping that looked real, and my brother would have to handle it.

But they wouldn't use live rounds, and they would never actually hurt me.

Now a bullet was lodged in my leg, and blood had already run down my boot and onto the floor.

I barely had the strength to lift my head and look at the six masked men standing in front of me.

The man closest to me had a black snake tattooed between the thumb and forefinger of his right hand.

To the Moretti family, that mark was the worst possible sign.

The man in charge took my phone and called my father.

"Don Moretti. I've heard so much about you.

"I'm not going to get greedy. All I want is ten million euros. You have two hours.

"If the money doesn't hit the account, I take something from your daughter."

The line went quiet for two seconds, as if my father had sensed something was wrong too.

"Let me hear her voice."

Their leader put the call on speaker and held the phone up to my face.

"Talk."

"Dad! They're not your men!"

The kidnapper grabbed my jaw so hard he nearly dislocated it.

"All I wanted was proof of life."

Thankfully, my father had already heard me.

"Elena, what do you mean?"

I rushed to get the words out.

"Black snake.

"They've got black snake tattoos on their hands. And they don't even know the abort code."

The line went dead silent. When my father spoke again, his voice was ice-cold.

"Black snake?

"Elena, lying is a bad habit. Do you want this test to end so badly that you'd make up something like that?"

I was about to explain when the kidnapper's eyes went cold. He jammed the muzzle of his gun right into the wound in my leg.

I screamed.

My brother immediately yelled, "Dad, maybe something really is wrong! End the test! Tell them to let her go right now!"

My father ignored him and gave someone beside him a cold order. "Now."

Hurried footsteps sounded in the background. Soon, another voice came on the line. "Don, the team just checked in. All six men are at the south warehouse. Everything's fine."

I froze.

That couldn't be right.

My father scoffed.

"You hear that? My men have eyes on everything!

"Lying won't get you anywhere, Elena.

"Besides, it's normal for them to change their look at the last minute for a drill."

My brother sounded terrified. "But Dad, Elena really has been shot!"

"Which is exactly why you need to stay calm! In a real kidnapping, that would count as a minor injury!"

My father lowered his voice.

"Matteo, one day you're going to sit in my chair.

"If you lose your head the second your sister cries out in pain, you won't live long enough to take over."

The kidnapper had been listening for a while, clearly enjoying himself. He stuck a finger in his ear and snorted.

"Don Moretti.

"I don't care how you train your heir. Let's talk money."

My brother seized on his words like a lifeline.

"Yes! I'll pay! It's only ten million! I can pay!

"Just let Elena go, and I'll pay whatever you want!"

My father slammed his palm on the table.

"Don't be stupid! Paying the ransom is the worst thing you could do. You're my son. How can you let the enemy push you around?!"

Then he sighed.

"I'll pretend I didn't hear that. The test goes on. I'll give you a little more time to decide what to do.

"But remember this. In real life, kidnappers don't give you time to think."

Then he hung up, just like that, and left me staring at the kidnapper in horror.

Instead of getting angry that my father had hung up on him, the leader laughed. "A test? Ha! Looks like your father really trusts his own people, huh?"

My heart sank. I was shaking as I spoke. "My family has money. Please, just wait a little longer, okay? My brother will pay you!"

Suddenly, hurried footsteps sounded outside the warehouse. Someone pushed the door open.

"There are Moretti men outside."

"Who's leading them?"

"Lorenzo."

My breath caught.

Lorenzo Greco had been at my father's side for more than 20 years. He was one of the Moretti family's best capos.

He'd found me.

I closed my eyes, my heart pounding with relief and hope.

Old and hunched over, my father sat slumped on the ground. He didn't get up for a long time."Elena, I haven't had one good day in all these years."I lost your mom. And Matteo doesn't want to be close to me."I didn't say anything, so he hurried on, "I'm not asking you to feel sorry for me. I just want you to know that I really do regret it."I nodded."I know."A little light came back into my father's eyes.A second later, I went on, "But your regret is your business. It has nothing to do with whether I forgive you."That little light went out at once. My father's lips wouldn't stop trembling."Then what else can I do? I'll give you anything."I looked at him."I'm already dead. I don't want anything."My father broke down, his voice rough with sobs."Elena... hit me. Yell at me."Make me suffer every one of those injuries too, okay? Just don't turn your back on your dad."I shook my head. My father froze."You think once you've been punished enough, I'm supposed to forgive you. But

Suddenly, everything around us went dark. When my father opened his eyes again, we were standing on the Palermo docks. Some men had 16-year-old me backed into a corner. I was terrified, clutching the jewelry I'd just pulled off.I kept saying, "This stuff is worth a lot. Take all of it! Just don't kill me!"The color left my father's face."Elena!"He rushed forward, but his hand went right through my body. The girl I used to be couldn't see him at all.Like a madman, my father threw himself in front of me."Get away from her!"But the men walked straight through him. He couldn't stop any of it.Then the scene changed. We were in the basement.I was curled up in a corner, clutching my broken ribs.I'd wanted so badly for my father to hold me. But he just stood outside the door, as calm and controlled as ever. "Take a good look," he told Matteo. "Going soft will get your family killed."My father rushed at his past self and tried to grab him."Shut up! Get her out of there! She's hurt!"

Many years later, my father was too old to get out of bed.Matteo sat by his bedside. After the doctor left, my father suddenly opened his cloudy eyes. He stared hard at the doorway, and tears spilled down his face."Elena?"My brother turned around in surprise, but the doorway was empty. Still, my father pushed against the mattress, using all his strength to try to sit up."Elena! It's really you!"I was the vision he saw as he lay dying. There I stood, still 22.My father reached out his hand."Come here. Let Dad take a look at you."I didn't move. His hand froze in midair."Are you still mad at your dad?""I'm not mad."My father's eyes lit up."Then did you come to take me with you?"I shook my head."No."My father went still."Then you...""I just came to take a look."He cried even harder."All these years, I've been waiting for you."I looked at him."But I haven't been waiting for you."My father's face went white. He opened his mouth. A long moment passed before he spoke, his

My father seemed unable to believe his eyes. He roughly wiped away his tears and stared at the letter. At last, he opened it with shaking hands. The first line read:"Dad, I'm sorry."My father started crying again. He gripped the letter tightly and kept reading."By the time you read this, I'll probably have left Sicily."Please don't be mad. I'm just a little tired."My father's breathing grew heavier."You always said my injuries meant something because Matteo would remember them."But Dad, to me, it was just one needless injury after another."I never did anything wrong, did I?"My father's hand jerked, and the paper rustled."I never blamed my brother."When he screwed up, he got scared too. He'd beg you not to punish me."The one who really scared me was you."Every time Matteo screwed up, you'd stare at me like a monster about to eat me alive. I was terrified."My father suddenly pressed the letter to his face. The sobs he'd been holding back finally broke loose."Elena..."No o

After stepping down, my father was no longer so busy. He finally had time to learn about my life. One rainy day, he walked into my room.Pietro Bellini, our old butler, was inside sorting through my things. When he saw my father, he stopped and gave a small, respectful nod."Sir."My father nodded without a word and walked over to the closet.A suitcase was standing there."What's this?"Pietro lowered his head."Elena packed it."My father turned back to him, puzzled."Packed it for what?""To leave Sicily."My father was taken aback. He crouched down and unzipped the suitcase.Clothes. A passport and ID. And a one-way plane ticket to London, dated 15 days after the kidnapping. My father held the ticket. His breathing quickened, and his hands started to shake."When did she buy this?""About a month ago."Pietro hesitated, but spoke anyway. "Elena told me not to tell anyone. Especially you."My father turned to him in disbelief. Pietro's eyes were red too."She said that if you knew,

The next day, my father called together the entire inner circle of the Moretti family.Matteo was summoned back too.Every seat at the long table was taken. My father sat at the head. Without warning, he announced, "As of today, I'm stepping down."The room erupted."Don! What are you saying?"Lorenzo shot to his feet."The Moretti family needs you!"My father raised a hand, and every voice fell silent. He looked at Matteo."Come here."My brother stared at him, stunned, and didn't move.My father took off the ring he'd worn for more than 20 years and set it on the table in front of his chair."This seat is yours."Matteo's expression changed."I don't want it."My father nodded."You can hate me. But you have to take over."My brother slammed his hand on the table."Why? Because of Elena?"My father's eyes reddened. The whole table was dead silent. After a long time, he swallowed hard and finally spoke."I've thought about this for a long time. I've made up my mind."You're kind and d
