The courtyard was alive with laughter. Children darted past in bursts of giggles, their bare feet thumping against the packed earth, mothers calling out encouragements as little bodies raced around. I hadn’t heard this kind of sound in so long unrestrained joy, simple and pure and it washed over me like sunlight warming my skin.

Joey tugged at my hand, her face bright with mischief. “Come on, Addy! You’re not getting out of this one just because you’ve got a belly.” She poked at my small bump with exaggerated care.

I laughed, shaking my head. “You’re terrible, Joey. I can’t exactly sprint.”

“Who said sprint? We’ll do teams. You just need to cheer. Or” her eyes glinted mischievously, “be the judge.”

The mothers had gathered near the edges, some with little ones perched on their hips, others holding baskets of fruit they’d brought to share. Devon leaned against a low stone wall at the far side, arms crossed, watching with that steady gaze of his. His lips quirked, soft and knowing, like

Devon’s absence sat heavy in the air, like the house itself missed him.I paced our chambers more times than I could count, The twins shifted beside me, Their movements reminded me of him of his promise to protect them, of the way he always bent his head close and whispered to them as though they already understood. But he wasn’t here.He had walked out into the night, carrying his mother’s pendant and his father’s betrayal, carrying all of us, and left me with silence. I knew why he had to go. I had encouraged him to. We can’t stand alone forever, Devon. But knowing and feeling were two different things.Fear slithered through me when the nights stretched long. What if those alphas he sought betrayed him? What if they killed him before he could even speak? What if Elias found out?Joey tried to distract me, bless her heart. She’d bring little games to the hearth, cards and guessing games, even riddles that made the women in the pack laugh. But when the laughter died, the space beside

The council hall smelled of cedar and old fire smoke, the kind of neutral ground that carried no one pack’s scent. That was intentional. Neutral halls were built like this, far from territorial borders, guarded by oaths older than any living wolf.I stood alone in the center of the chamber, Addy’s voice echoing in my mind like a soft tether of strength. Come back safe. Don’t let them rattle you.Behind me, the doors groaned open. Three alphas entered, each flanked by two warriors. They did not look at each other as much as they looked at me.The first was Alpha Thane of Ironfang, a tall, broad-shouldered man with hair streaked silver despite his youth. His eyes were like polished stone, sharp and weighing every word before it was spoken. To his left moved Alpha Selene of Silverpeak, the only woman among them, her robes of gray and silver lined with fur. She carried herself with quiet grace, the kind of authority that didn’t need to roar to be obeyed. The third was impossible to miss.

The council hall was already buzzing when Devon and I walked in. The long stone table at the center was surrounded by warriors, advisors, elders, and trusted pack members. The air itself seemed to vibrate with tension, heavy with the knowledge that Elias was not done with us. His retreat after Levi’s death had not been surrender, it had been a promise. A delay. A gathering storm.I squeezed Devon’s hand as we stepped forward, and though his expression remained impassive, the small flex of his fingers around mine told me everything. He knew the stakes. He knew what was at risk. He knew what I was feeling, the way my heart still raced whenever the thought of Elias surfaced, the way my arms instinctively tightened around our twins whenever they stirred. The hall quieted as Devon took his seat at the head of the table. I sat just to his right, Joey behind me like a silent shadow. For a moment, no one moved. Then Garret, one of the senior warriors, slammed his fist against the table.“We c

The air in the pack house had changed. It wasn’t just the faint scent of herbs lingering from the clinic wing where George and Georgia had been born, or the sweet baby powder Joey had insisted on dusting them with. No, it was heavier than that denser. The very walls of the house seemed to know what we all knew: Elias wasn’t finished. He would come. And this time, without Levi beside him, he would be desperate, reckless, dangerous. I cradled Georgia against my chest while George slept in his little basket nearby, his tiny fists curled tight, already looking like his father when he was brooding. Georgia stirred, cooing softly, and I stroked her silken cheek. The twins had become the center of my world in just a matter of days. Every time I looked at them, the fear of Elias’s looming shadow deepened not because I was afraid for myself, but because of them. Devon’s footsteps sounded in the hall before he even pushed the door open. His presence was like gravity pulling, steady, impos

The world was still a blur of exhaustion and wonder when I opened my eyes to the sound of tiny cries. My body ached in ways I never thought possible, every muscle pulled thin and trembling from the storm I’d been through, but the sound of those little voices my children’s voices was enough to make it all worth it.I turned my head, groggy but alert, and there they were. Two bundles wrapped snugly in soft blankets, cradled carefully in Joey’s arms. She looked exhausted too, her hair mussed. but her smile was radiant as she lowered the babies toward me. Joey had wanted me to rest and get some sleep before the kids woke up. But now she looks like she needs it more than I did.Devon’s hand closed over mine, large and steady, grounding me. He crouched close to the bed, his face a mixture of exhaustion and joy. He's been so happy since the birth of the twins and I can't blame him, I'm over the moon myself.Devon leaned forward and kissed my forehead, then each tiny head in turn. His ha

The first morning after the battle felt strange, too still, too quiet. The world outside had changed, but inside the safe room, time seemed to slow. My body still ached from labor, my muscles tender and weak, yet every time I looked down at the two bundles in my arms, strength bloomed in places I didn’t know existed. The twins. Our twins. Our babies.George stirred first, making a small whimpering sound that pulled me from half-sleep. My heart squeezed as I adjusted him against my chest, the soft weight grounding me. His sister soon followed, fussing with a cry that pierced the silence. Instinct guided me, even through exhaustion I rocked them gently, whispering soft nonsense words that seemed to soothe them.Devon was instantly at my side, his broad shadow falling across us. His hair was disheveled, his jaw rough with stubble, but his eyes gods, those eyes were as sharp and alert as ever. He crouched low, his hand brushing mine as he leaned close to study the babies.“Hungry?” he as
