Chapter 4

Author: mina
The dressing room door swung shut, and their footsteps faded down the hall.

I stood there looking at the plain dress in front of me, and suddenly I laughed out loud.

I'd let Theodore grow so bold that he actually dared to threaten me like this.

I took out my phone and called my assistant, Ivy Walsh. "Ivy, go open the Amherst family safe. Take out what's inside and bring it to me."

I paused. "And bring the alliance agreement we signed with the Harrison family eight years ago, too."

Ivy's tone turned serious at once. "Yes, Ms. Amherst!"

Eight years ago, Sterling and I had signed that agreement in secret.

To protect the Amherst family's interests, I'd insisted on several terms. One spelled out exactly what would happen if the heir I chose ever betrayed me.

All of the heir's shares would be transferred to me, and I could do whatever I wanted with them.

Theodore would be stripped of his title as heir.

The Harrison family would cast him out, and he'd never see another cent of its money or any of its perks.

I still remembered the sour look on Sterling's face when he signed it.

When I thought about it that way, I really ought to thank Theodore.

He was about to hand me a fortune.

With those shares, the Amherst family would easily become New York's top mafia family.

As for the Harrison family, it might even need a new name.

Ivy was there in no time.

The huge black garment bag fell away, revealing a wedding dress beneath the lights.

The ivory silk satin shone, and the hand-sewn Chantilly lace was exquisite.

Thousands of pearls were sewn into the skirt, and the Amherst family creed was embroidered in silver thread along the waistline.

This was the Amherst family gown.

"Help me put it on."

I stood in front of the full-length mirror and looked at my reflection.

After losing 22 pounds, my features looked sharper. My collarbones stood out in a clean, even line, and the dress highlighted the elegant curve of my neck and shoulders.

This wasn't the gown I'd spent the last three months dreaming about.

But it was mine. It fit perfectly, and it carried the hopes of every Amherst heir who'd come before me.

Ivy stood beside me holding the alliance agreement. I glanced at her, took a deep breath, and walked out of the dressing room.

In the hallway, the butler was leading the board members toward the study.

When they saw me come out, they all stopped.

They'd obviously already noticed that someone else had taken my place as the bride at the rehearsal downstairs.

At the front of the group, Leo Harrison gave a scornful snort. "Ms. Amherst, so this is the heir you picked yourself.

"The Harrison family has never been so humiliated..."

Before he could finish, I cut him off. "The wedding hasn't happened yet. I can switch grooms anytime. After all, the Harrison family has plenty of eligible men."

Back then, no one had opposed Theodore becoming heir more strongly than Leo. He'd also tried to set me up with his grandson, Anthony Harrison.

He'd even used Theodore's name to invite me out, then arranged for Anthony to meet me without asking me first.

I still remembered Anthony's deep blue eyes and his sharp features.

I'd heard he had a natural talent for business, too. Nothing he'd ever handled had gone wrong.

He was polite and composed, carrying himself with natural grace.

Even when I turned him down, he took it like a gentleman. He simply smiled and said, "That's my fault, Ms. Amherst. I came along too late."

Leo gave me the cold shoulder after that.

But now, I thought about those sapphire-blue eyes.

I smiled at Leo. "Leo, do you happen to have a better match in mind for me?"

He hesitated for a moment and looked me up and down. A shrewd gleam lit his clouded old eyes. "Of course, Ms. Amherst."

I knew he was a smart man.

"Then I'll see you in the chapel."

I gave him a small smile. "The rehearsal isn't over yet, is it?"

He froze.I held his gaze and spoke slowly. "Layla was nothing more than a tool you used to prove yourself."You hated my status. You hated that I was the one who chose you. But you couldn't deny it: you only got where you are because I chose you."So you paraded sweet, eager-to-please Layla right in front of me."I stood up and walked over to him. "You wanted to show me that you had someone whose whole world revolved around you too."You wanted to look powerful in front of Layla, so you gave her things that belonged to me. And you loved watching me feel humiliated and hurt right in front of you, didn't you?""No. No, that's not true."Theodore's lips trembled, and his voice shook. "Hailey, I really do love you. Our eight years together were real!""What do you love about me?"I scoffed. "You love my shares. You love that I can deal with the board for you, get the Amherst family to back you, and help you escape the stigma of being an illegitimate son!"You never loved me for me."I tur

News that Theodore had been cast out of the Harrison family spread even faster than I'd expected. That night, I sat at my desk and opened the files Ivy had put together.Page after page listed every deal Theodore had handled for the Harrison family over the years.Drugs, arms, money laundering. Every single deal was documented down to the smallest detail.I tapped my fingers on the desk. "As far as I know, Theodore has two large warehouses where he stores his own stock. Even without the Harrison family behind him, he can still supply his customers on his own."Ivy, have the families he did business with gotten back to us?"Ivy stood beside the desk, calm as ever. "All of them have."The Sicilians have announced that they won't accept any shipment tied to Theodore."The Amherst family's ports are closed to him, and all the overland transit points he'd need belong to Leo."With no buyers and no shipping routes, Theodore's drugs can only sit in those warehouses forever."I nodded, satisfi

I turned to Anthony, surprised and delighted. "When did you set all this up?""In the car, on the way over."His hand was warm and dry, his fingertips lightly callused from years of handling a gun.He smiled at me, his eyes gentle. "Hailey, I hope you don't mind that I arranged all this without asking you first."But I figured nothing helps you unwind like a party."He stroked the back of my hand. "I don't want to see you unhappy."It took me a second to process his words, and my ears grew warm. This was only the second time we'd met, and yet he acted like he'd known me for years.Out on the lawn, Annie, one of my closest friends, stood at the front of the crowd. She rushed over and threw her arms around me."Hailey! You were amazing."She pulled back, her eyes red. "You should've done this ages ago. Do you know how long I've had to put up with Layla?"And Theodore! Somebody should've told him to get lost a long time ago. Without you, he's nothing."Annie grew more worked up, her voice

Howard adjusted his glasses and took the agreement. The chapel was so quiet that the only sound was people breathing. After a long while, his head snapped up and he looked at me. His voice was hoarse. "The agreement is real."All the color drained from Theodore's face at once.He swayed and had to grab the pew behind him just to stay on his feet."It bears Sterling Harrison's own signature and the Harrison family seal. It's fully binding."Howard's voice was low. "Under the terms of this agreement, if the heir betrays Ms. Amherst in any way, all Harrison family shares in his name automatically transfer to Ms. Amherst."And... his status as heir ends immediately.""That's impossible!"Theodore lunged forward and snatched the agreement from him. "It's fake! My father would never sign something like this! I'm his son!"I looked at him without a shred of pity.Right on cue, Leo stepped forward with a respectful expression. "Well then, Ms. Amherst, can we revisit the matter of the heir?"He

At that, Theodore spun around.Layla stood there looking lost. The color had drained from her cheeks, and her eyes were wide with panic."Layla was just..."Theodore gritted his teeth. "Layla was just helping out with the rehearsal. Hailey's my fiancée. We've been together for eight years!"As soon as the words left Theodore's mouth, Anthony laughed openly at him. "Theodore, I honestly don't know how you have the nerve to say that."For eight years, you took Hailey's patience for granted. Every time she gave in, you treated it as a weakness you could exploit whenever you wanted."You even let Layla wear our family's heirloom gown!"Anthony didn't raise his voice, yet every word reached every corner of the chapel. "I've waited eight years, and Ms. Amherst has finally chosen me."Now I'm the man she's chosen to marry!"Leo stood at the front of the crowd, unable to hide how pleased he was."Enough!" Theodore's voice was shrill. His tie had been knocked crooked in the scuffle, and all tra

I turned toward the voice.Anthony Harrison walked into the chapel in a sharply tailored dark suit. His shoes clicked against the marble floor, and every head turned his way.The last time I'd seen him was eight years earlier, when I'd rejected him in person. After that, our paths never crossed again. He never even showed up at Harrison family dinners.Whenever anyone asked Leo about Anthony, he would stare straight at me and say in a strange tone that his grandson had been hurt and needed time to recover. At first, I thought Anthony had actually been injured. Only much later did I understand what Leo meant. But I didn't believe it. After all, Anthony had been perfectly calm when he walked away that day. Now, as he approached me, he looked like the gentle man I remembered, the one who had bowed out so gracefully. Yet something about him felt different. He seemed more mature than I remembered. His jaw was sharper, and his expression had grown calmer. He stopped in front of me and looked
