Chapter 5

Leo called an aide over, gave him a few quick instructions, then followed me to the chapel.

I could hear the music playing inside. I smiled coldly.

A staff member pushed the chapel doors open, and the wedding march stopped dead.

Theodore stood at the end of the aisle with his arm around Layla.

The moment he saw me, his smile slowly froze.

"Hailey? What is this?"

For a second, Theodore looked awestruck. Then his expression hardened with anger. "Who said you could come in here wearing that?

"Where's the dress I picked out especially for you? Hailey! Why do you keep defying me?"

I walked slowly up to him. "You gave the heirloom gown I was supposed to wear to someone else, so I had to find a wedding dress that suited the occasion.

"After all, I'm the bride. Not her."

I turned to glance at Layla.

The heirloom gown was even dirtier now. The tear at the waist had spread, and the skirt was covered in dust and wine stains.

Layla bit her lip and looked miserable. "Ms. Amherst, I didn't mean to... Theodore said I could take your place..."

As she spoke, she looked to Theodore for help.

Theodore frowned and lowered his voice. "Hailey, first you disobeyed my orders, and now you're treating Layla like this in front of everyone!

"For the sake of the wedding, I'll let it go this time."

He held out his hand as if he were doing me the biggest favor in the world. "Since you're here, let's get on with the rehearsal."

I stepped back. But before I could say no, Layla cut in.

"No, that's not right. Isn't the Harrison heir's bride supposed to wear the Harrison family's heirloom gown?"

Her eyes were red. "Ms. Amherst, is it really okay for you to break your promise to your future husband and the Harrison family like this?"

Then she tugged at Theodore's jacket. "Theodore, aren't you the Harrison heir?"

I raised an eyebrow. I never thought I'd see the day Layla said something clever.

Sure enough, that did it. Theodore had started to calm down, but his face darkened again. He glared at me with the fury of a man whose authority had just been challenged.

"Hailey, Layla's right."

He pointed at my dress. "You walked in here wearing the Amherst family gown? Do you have no respect for me at all?

"You spent three months wearing yourself down until you looked like this. Did you ever ask me even once?

"You don't care about my feelings at all. All you care about is this wedding! I'm the Harrison heir, and I'm going to be your husband!

"You should be learning to please me, do as you're told, and follow my orders!"

As he said it, he wrapped his arm around Layla's waist again.

"You should learn from Layla! Whatever she does, she puts me first. She's sweet and full of life. No matter what she wears, she looks young and vibrant.

"And you?"

His eyes were full of contempt. "Even the most beautiful wedding dress in the world would look like a burial shroud on you!"

Layla flashed me a taunting smile, then quickly ducked her head as if she were shy. "Don't, Theodore! Don't talk about Ms. Amherst like that.

"If only she could be, well, more like me. Then she'd take good care of you and dress the way you like."

Watching the two of them made my stomach turn.

Why had I ever fallen in love with a man like this?

Selfish, stupid, shallow.

Fortunately, I could still put things right.

I let out a cold laugh. "So how do you want me to make it up to you?"

Theodore didn't seem to expect that. He blinked, then grinned smugly.

"Looking like this, you'd scare everyone at the real wedding. Why not just let Layla walk down the aisle in your place?"

He paused, as if making a reluctant concession for my sake. "Once the wedding's over, I'll..."

"Sure."

I cut him off before he could finish.

Theodore hadn't expected me to agree so easily. A pleased smile spread across his face. "Sweetheart, I knew you'd be understanding."

He stepped forward, reaching for me.

I stepped back, out of his reach. "Mr. Harrison," I said slowly, one word at a time. "I think you've got the wrong idea."

"What's that supposed to mean?" Theodore frowned.

"Did I ever say you were my groom?"

Theodore burst out laughing, as if my stubbornness amused him.

"Stop making a scene, Hailey. Who else could you possibly..."

Before he could finish, the chapel doors swung open.

The glare from the spotlights outlined a tall, straight-backed figure.

A voice as deep and smooth as a cello came through the haze of the spotlights. "Sorry I'm late, my bride."

He froze.I held his gaze and spoke slowly. "Layla was nothing more than a tool you used to prove yourself."You hated my status. You hated that I was the one who chose you. But you couldn't deny it: you only got where you are because I chose you."So you paraded sweet, eager-to-please Layla right in front of me."I stood up and walked over to him. "You wanted to show me that you had someone whose whole world revolved around you too."You wanted to look powerful in front of Layla, so you gave her things that belonged to me. And you loved watching me feel humiliated and hurt right in front of you, didn't you?""No. No, that's not true."Theodore's lips trembled, and his voice shook. "Hailey, I really do love you. Our eight years together were real!""What do you love about me?"I scoffed. "You love my shares. You love that I can deal with the board for you, get the Amherst family to back you, and help you escape the stigma of being an illegitimate son!"You never loved me for me."I tur

News that Theodore had been cast out of the Harrison family spread even faster than I'd expected. That night, I sat at my desk and opened the files Ivy had put together.Page after page listed every deal Theodore had handled for the Harrison family over the years.Drugs, arms, money laundering. Every single deal was documented down to the smallest detail.I tapped my fingers on the desk. "As far as I know, Theodore has two large warehouses where he stores his own stock. Even without the Harrison family behind him, he can still supply his customers on his own."Ivy, have the families he did business with gotten back to us?"Ivy stood beside the desk, calm as ever. "All of them have."The Sicilians have announced that they won't accept any shipment tied to Theodore."The Amherst family's ports are closed to him, and all the overland transit points he'd need belong to Leo."With no buyers and no shipping routes, Theodore's drugs can only sit in those warehouses forever."I nodded, satisfi

I turned to Anthony, surprised and delighted. "When did you set all this up?""In the car, on the way over."His hand was warm and dry, his fingertips lightly callused from years of handling a gun.He smiled at me, his eyes gentle. "Hailey, I hope you don't mind that I arranged all this without asking you first."But I figured nothing helps you unwind like a party."He stroked the back of my hand. "I don't want to see you unhappy."It took me a second to process his words, and my ears grew warm. This was only the second time we'd met, and yet he acted like he'd known me for years.Out on the lawn, Annie, one of my closest friends, stood at the front of the crowd. She rushed over and threw her arms around me."Hailey! You were amazing."She pulled back, her eyes red. "You should've done this ages ago. Do you know how long I've had to put up with Layla?"And Theodore! Somebody should've told him to get lost a long time ago. Without you, he's nothing."Annie grew more worked up, her voice

Howard adjusted his glasses and took the agreement. The chapel was so quiet that the only sound was people breathing. After a long while, his head snapped up and he looked at me. His voice was hoarse. "The agreement is real."All the color drained from Theodore's face at once.He swayed and had to grab the pew behind him just to stay on his feet."It bears Sterling Harrison's own signature and the Harrison family seal. It's fully binding."Howard's voice was low. "Under the terms of this agreement, if the heir betrays Ms. Amherst in any way, all Harrison family shares in his name automatically transfer to Ms. Amherst."And... his status as heir ends immediately.""That's impossible!"Theodore lunged forward and snatched the agreement from him. "It's fake! My father would never sign something like this! I'm his son!"I looked at him without a shred of pity.Right on cue, Leo stepped forward with a respectful expression. "Well then, Ms. Amherst, can we revisit the matter of the heir?"He

At that, Theodore spun around.Layla stood there looking lost. The color had drained from her cheeks, and her eyes were wide with panic."Layla was just..."Theodore gritted his teeth. "Layla was just helping out with the rehearsal. Hailey's my fiancée. We've been together for eight years!"As soon as the words left Theodore's mouth, Anthony laughed openly at him. "Theodore, I honestly don't know how you have the nerve to say that."For eight years, you took Hailey's patience for granted. Every time she gave in, you treated it as a weakness you could exploit whenever you wanted."You even let Layla wear our family's heirloom gown!"Anthony didn't raise his voice, yet every word reached every corner of the chapel. "I've waited eight years, and Ms. Amherst has finally chosen me."Now I'm the man she's chosen to marry!"Leo stood at the front of the crowd, unable to hide how pleased he was."Enough!" Theodore's voice was shrill. His tie had been knocked crooked in the scuffle, and all tra

I turned toward the voice.Anthony Harrison walked into the chapel in a sharply tailored dark suit. His shoes clicked against the marble floor, and every head turned his way.The last time I'd seen him was eight years earlier, when I'd rejected him in person. After that, our paths never crossed again. He never even showed up at Harrison family dinners.Whenever anyone asked Leo about Anthony, he would stare straight at me and say in a strange tone that his grandson had been hurt and needed time to recover. At first, I thought Anthony had actually been injured. Only much later did I understand what Leo meant. But I didn't believe it. After all, Anthony had been perfectly calm when he walked away that day. Now, as he approached me, he looked like the gentle man I remembered, the one who had bowed out so gracefully. Yet something about him felt different. He seemed more mature than I remembered. His jaw was sharper, and his expression had grown calmer. He stopped in front of me and looked
